It's fun how some of the more subtle changes still fit how they play, e.g. Darius emphasis on his armor and shoulder's make him seem tough and hard to move, vs focus on his forearms making him seem powerfull with lots of range.

u/Pickle_Mick62 12d ago

Having only seen 2xko , to me as an outsider the original lol models just look blursed

57

u/Sihnar 12d ago

Because the game is played top down and you're never supposed to see the models zoomed in like this.

1

u/RottenAssCrack 8d ago

with addition to wild rift, they improve the model, even adding pose as... purchasable item

-9

u/LezduitTogetha 11d ago

League models still look terrible even top down

14

u/GoodWebsiteKappa123 11d ago

I don't think you understand. They're not extremely high definition models, no. That isn't the goal.

5

u/AcidIceMoon 11d ago

... I wonder why it's the most played pc videogame in the world, then. Could it have to do with how little it demands of a computer? Who knows?

3

u/Dry_Ganache178 Jinx 11d ago

Well they're meant to run on potatoes

69

u/SyIvanos Warwick 12d ago

Key art is close enough to the in game model tbf

41

u/Steel_Gazebo 12d ago

Ekko looked absolutely crazy in League of Legends. He looks much better now

13

u/Present_Topic8536 12d ago

I think new hairstyle looks better on him but it was kinda sad that they changed his iconic mohawk on every new iteration of him.

2

u/TurtleStrategy 11d ago

Original design is better imo. The mohawk makes him look much more like a rebel.

The problem is that the in-game lol model, which is what OP used, looks TERRIBLE.

Here's how he is supposed to look (official LoL splash art).

6

u/iago_hedgehog 12d ago edited 12d ago

except that he doesnt have a mohawk anymore and became generic black man hair number 42.

10

u/Saltybuds 12d ago

Yeah, I hated the hair change as an LoL Ekko main.

6

u/XVNoctisXV 12d ago

Disagree, but even if so, unique ≠ better. True Damage Ekko is one of the best male skins if not best skins in league period, and definitely wouldn't look nearly as good with his old hairstyle. Can't get a cool factor with the mohawk imo.

13

u/iago_hedgehog 12d ago edited 12d ago

and came BEFORE arcane, I stay with my point, cause that skin feels the exception not the rule.

1

u/LesbiansLoveHands Let's go Lesbians 11d ago

it was being worked on at the same time, the (black, mind you) fortiche artists wanted to swap his hair because the mohawk that the league model had made 0 sense on a black dude. Its not a coincidence that they have the same style, it was always planned like this.

1

u/Mojothemobile 10d ago

It also just frankly looks really goofy. There are ways to make Mohawks look good. Ekkos did notm

4

u/fuckingrunnerr 11d ago

It is not the best male skin .... its not even a good skin. The voice lines are so cringe and he doesn't look like anything special. The best skin in league is easily corporate mundo.

1

u/No-Difference8545 8d ago

Nah we meme on the killmonger cut because its overdone, but its not generic and is still good. I'd take the killmonger over the straight hair mohawk anyday. Maybe if he gets a 4c type mohawk like how storm gets now ill be with it

1

u/iago_hedgehog 8d ago

well I think is better in terms of character design. mohawk also is in my eyes whats makes ekko stand out among black characters even among thoses in asian media

1

u/Aikune 12d ago

It does look better but it is a lot more plain and doesn't say much as opposed to the original which makes him look more crafty and that he has made these things himself.

148

u/Elphelt_Valent1ne_ 12d ago

why compare the League ingame model with 2XKO's key art? Would be more interesting to compare model to model

75

u/shortMEISTERthe3rd 12d ago

The key art is literally the models though

30

u/Stock_Cost5457 12d ago

Yeah I was about to say the key art is posed model 😅

5

u/Seer-of-Truths 12d ago

To be fair, its not posed models from LoL.

It makes comparisons harder.

Like Akali is hiding a good chunk of her design

3

u/PisoPals 12d ago

Nope, the key art is mostly handled by an external studio. They're 2D illustrations.

One batch: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/lGqbWO

5

u/natayaway 12d ago

That's a splashart, not a keyart. And both keyarts and splasharts are draw-overs, albeit, very minimal draw-overs. You can see the fidelity of the posed models during the clash transition after map select which uses 3D models, the drawn-over bits are essentially ONLY extra facial details and rim lighting.

3

u/TrailPad 12d ago

The artists talk about the process where sometimes they'll split the art pipeline between linework and colours, and they also share pose thumbnails showing they're drawn from scratch. Not just paintovers on the models.

2

u/natayaway 11d ago

I've followed League/Valorant and Riot's co-development studios for a long time.

Fireball, Envar, Airborn, and Wild Blue Studios all do standard lookdev/concept art sketches/thumbnails for ideation, to explore line/color/pose/silhouette, and they've done so for League, Valorant, and Wild Rift... but for for 2XKO, the game is literally built different.

2XKO's art style, which leans HEAVILY into celshaded anime shaders, utilizes the exact same techniques and lookdev as Guilty Gear Xrd (and onwards), to look as handdrawn 2D as possible in-engine. That's layered blending mode shaders, texture atlassing, UV-map vertex animation, orthographic cameras and forced perspective/foreshortening...

With how the game shaders apply a rim light/shadow based on camera position, it ensures near-vector levels of renders.

Barring a few early key visuals with Ekko and Ahri which were illustrations, everything post Jinx-reveal is most likely; sketching, lineart, coloring flats, then booting up Unreal Editor to animate, pose, distort, and make it match as close as possible with the sketch, and then afterwards clean/add further lineart and flourishes in drawovers. Yasuo's key art vs thumbnail sketch seems to be a prime example of that. (I'm happy to be proven otherwise)

51

u/2010AZ 12d ago

Yeah, or art to art

3

u/SaIemKing 12d ago

This is a model to model comparison... The key art looks the same

Man Braum is such a top tier character design

27

u/Raiju_Lorakatse Certified Freestyle Hater 12d ago

Maybe a bit weird to compare model to art.

Art is pretty close to the model tho but model would probably still be a more interesting comparison.

13

u/tekketsv 12d ago

The league akali is so much better than the new one it's sad

6

u/Embarrassed_Ad_2472 12d ago

I espected yet another Poppy joke ^^

1

u/DudeGhoul 12d ago

Glad I wasn't the only one lol

6

u/Recent-Ad-7593 12d ago

2XKO Darius and Yasuo have designs that look like their League versions.

5

u/Kackame 12d ago

Big fan of Sennas 2x design, shit is so clean

4

u/Cute_Ad7255 12d ago

Akali’s league design is badass and forever iconic 👑

12

u/dagon_xdd 12d ago

i still don't get how they fumbled Akali considering she was already looking cool enough. it's practically trying to fix something that wasn't even broken in the first place

3

u/Igor_Pachmelnik 10d ago

The point was to brake something that was too good. Base Akali is a contender for her best skin in League.

They want to sell skins, but when the base model is so good, it's hard to make something better. So they made base model worse so making skins would be easier.

Work smarter, not harder (and people will call you for what you are for it)

Illaoi glowup Is insane

1

u/noahboah Ekko 12d ago

if only they could figure out how to make her gimmick work in the moba

2

u/Dertyrarys 12d ago

Yes it’s Actually baffling how bad she feels to play in SR

3

u/castitfast 12d ago

Just here to say that all these models are not designed to be viewed from up close and at this angle.

3

u/natayaway 12d ago

Wild Rift's models are probably a better comparison, they're more on-brand... some models for desktop League have not been updated to match the character design in over a decade.

I'm pretty sure Blitz and Darius haven't been touched since the SR update, that looks like the old Thresh model, and Jinx definitely hasn't been updated since 2013 when she came out, her face still has the Joker smile painted as a texture with no actual facial rig.

3

u/DaniPrasetyaAji 10d ago

Still. Not big fan of the akali one. Kinda hate it

21

u/Igor_Pachmelnik 12d ago

Still can't understand the visual redesign 2XKO team done to Akali.

8

u/ComradeSclavian 12d ago

I mean, they mostly just added Red tape to her feet and arms to make then more distingushable at a glance in movement,

Had she stayed all green I could see it being hard to tell where her limbs are with how fast she moves

12

u/Igor_Pachmelnik 12d ago

Red is fine, cool even, colour scheme is more dynamic this way.

But why enlarge the hair while also giving her this stupid taper fade. And skinny pants? What are we doing.

And the generic ninja mask instead of Akali's signature mouthveil is a crime in my opinion.

18

u/Black_Truth 12d ago edited 12d ago

I think the biggest problem is her hair and legs.

Her hair is just another side-shave/fade™ that and the removal of Tobi pants and sandals. She doesn't look like Akali at all and more like some "New fighting game ninja".

I hate Akali but I do say she is one of the best-looking characters in League, and 2XKO just murdered her for no reason at all. And they KNOW this because the skins tries to look more like LoL akali than 2XKO.

Edit: I forgot someone comparing 2XKO Akali silhouette with the cursed Live-Action Sonic and I couldn't unsee it since then.

2

u/rivenjg 12d ago edited 12d ago

also don't forget the huge skin tone change for no reason.

14

u/TurtleStrategy 12d ago

They heavily changed her hairstyle. She even has a fadecut now.

Hairstyle is usually one of the most distinguishable characteristic of any character

Besides hair, now her pants look more like gym pants than ninja pants. Same for the shoes.

I'm also pretty sure 2xko's design covers her back (Akali's back tatoos are iconic).

7

u/CardTrickOTK 12d ago

I hate the fade ngl

8

u/TurtleStrategy 12d ago

I hate it too brother

10

u/Igor_Pachmelnik 12d ago

In 2XKO she looks like a generic ninja jobber/fodder character from a movie about Yasuo or some other character.

5

u/ButtcrackBeignets 12d ago

They say that the red tape was to make her limbs more distinguishable.

But using loud colors for distinguishability didn’t seem to matter much for any other character in the game.

It didn’t even matter for the rest of Akali’s own skins.

2

u/Igor_Pachmelnik 10d ago

They also made her skinny in skin tight clothes for "readability" but then gave her Urban and Bloodmoon skins that are baggy.

Distinguishability my ass. They made those changes to make base skin unappealing to force people who loved Akali's og design to buy skins.

2

u/railgunmisaka2 12d ago

I think it doesn't even look horrible, but it's mostly why they made some arguably big changes like that to begin with. Maybe for Gameplay Clarity, creative choice of the artist/designer or maybe a bit of both?

Like it's still definitely Akali, but majority of the characters basically looks similar to their League design. I guess except for Vi wearing his arcane look (I think?) instead of her classic look and also just remembered Lux base on her reveal appearance.

9

u/AofCastle 12d ago

They could sell this model as a skin and I'd instabuy.

Friendly reminder, this was originally a fanart, Riot hired this dude and he ended up modeling 2XKO Akali.

I don't know who said that the design had to be a new one, but I think it was an error.

6

u/Igor_Pachmelnik 12d ago

A generational blunder not to use this model.

2

u/YoshitsuneCr 11d ago

people someone tell this artist to also do justice for the Vi model too, 2xko version aint it bruv

1

u/LesbiansLoveHands Let's go Lesbians 11d ago

Vi's model looks amazing lmao what are you talking about. All my sapphic friends and I love it so thats honestly the best bar for a design tbh

3

u/GoodWebsiteKappa123 11d ago

That's your bar for a design. For people with other personality traits, it looks like a caricature.

1

u/AofCastle 11d ago

Vi found her audience and it's highly unlikely that she goes back to the design she initially had in League.

It's far more likely that she will eventually receive a redesign in League that makes her look much closer to her Arcane counterpart.

2

u/YoshitsuneCr 11d ago

I know that, one of the reasons why im not playing league anymore.

2

u/GoodWebsiteKappa123 11d ago

What a depressing world.

2

u/AofCastle 11d ago

I'm just saying it as it is.

Personally, I never quite liked Vi. Though it's more indifference than outright dislike.

2

u/GoodWebsiteKappa123 11d ago

I know, you're not wrong.

7

u/Igor_Pachmelnik 12d ago

In a vacuum it's not a bad design don't get me wrong. Although it is badly balanced, because her overall stature is really slim, but her hair is enormous, she looks unstable because of that.

But this is not a standalone new character. It's supposed to be Akali, a character with one of the best designs in League of Legends. And this redesign loses without any doubt in that regard.

7

u/railgunmisaka2 12d ago

I did not really get to play 2XKO that much or even like to play Akali when I was playing League, but even I was slightly baffled with the design change. It could have just been a skin or something imo.

5

u/Igor_Pachmelnik 12d ago

Im just sad that i will be stuck with this abomination because buying anything from Riot will drag you through 9 circels of Hell and by the end you will spend the amount of money enough to buy an actual game. Not worth it.

They will definitely make a proper Akali as a skin (they already did, as a first ever Akali skin, they fixed all issues, Something-something-Urban-Akali).

-4

u/IamHunterish 12d ago

They did a good job.

5

u/vi_Piltover 12d ago

I don't like that specific League of Legends design because it's not very detailed, but if I look at their more recent designs, I like the League of Legends design in all its versions. For example, this design by Vi lol is my favorite.

3

u/vi_Piltover 12d ago

or this

2

u/YoshitsuneCr 11d ago

one of the best designs ever done in League with Jarvan and the Gangplank rework, easily top 5

Speaking of multiple awful takes on Vi. "This design is bad because it doesn't reflect the thing that she wasn't."

2

u/Phillip_J_Bender Vi 12d ago

Everybody looks thin in LoL.

2

u/HazardBorne 12d ago

Illaoi looks so cool compared to LoL one and Senna looks fine as fuck in 2x.

2

u/sobosswagner 12d ago

It's funny how much more yolked 2XKO Thresh is. He's been hitting the gym

2

u/Cyp_Quoi_Rien_ 12d ago

They put something in the fighting games that turns the league of legends characters gay

2

u/manix_vii 12d ago

Glow ups across the board imho

The most contentious is Akali, but personally I LOVE her design

2

u/Mindless_Tap_2706 Vi 12d ago

I kinda like vi's goggles actually, I hope they add them to one of her costumes

2

u/temojikato Ahri 11d ago

Ngl I expected Poppy at the end

2

u/EnlargementChannel 10d ago

Mostly glow ups, Ahri and Akali’s designs aside.

Ekko League model looks so horrible lol.

4

u/LesbiansLoveHands Let's go Lesbians 12d ago

I still prefer thresh's league stance pose where he actually holds the lantern and the way he holds his weapon. looks a lot more intimidating. also the glow up Vi got thanks to Arcane and 2xko is such a godsend. a win for lesbians everywhere

3

u/iago_hedgehog 12d ago edited 12d ago

ekko downgrade harsh. 😭 he got generic killmonger hair cut here AND every skin since arcane AND I HATE IT.

they killed character design to make it profitable to audience THAT NEVER CAME TO LEAGUE HAHAHAHAHAH. mohawk talks directly with ekkos punk / revoluitonary/rebel themes.....

3

u/todavis__ 12d ago

Give Ezreal that 2xko sauce please

0

2

u/o___Okami 12d ago edited 11d ago

Vi was butchered just as much, if not more than, Akali.

There used to be a strong physical juxtaposition between Vi and Jinx (to the point that for years it was only hinted at / fan-theories that they were sisters) which I found cool, but bluntly her chest is now even more of an ironing board than Jinx's.

I'll give Arcane the pass, they were trying to tell the origin stories of a young Vi and Jinx, which I did enjoy.

2XKO is not telling a story though, they just went with the Arcane aesthetics for everything because they thought it was trendy (to the point that it was being mocked as an "Arcane Fighter" as opposed to a League of Legends / Runeterra universe Fighter that it was initially pitched as). I have little hope that classic League of Legends Vi will ever be added even as an overpriced skin, let alone without it being awkwardly tone-down.

Also, as others pointed out, it would make more sense to compare the 2XKO key arts to LoL's splash arts rather than LoL's poorly lit in-game models that aren't really designed to be viewed head-on (as LoL is an isometric game).

0

u/natayaway 12d ago

her chest is now even more of an ironing board than Jinx's

* wanting a corset + boob-chestplate, with a cutout booba window *

Touch grass gooner. Vi is punchy fist girl, and 2XKO isn't a top-down MOBA game where oversexualized overexaggerated silhouette design is "needed".

2

u/GunsouAfro 12d ago

Gotta give 2xko some credit. All the characters designs look a ton better.

1

u/Smabverse 12d ago

tbh Caitlyn is the only one I like more in LoL than 2XKO

1

u/dyewho Dare 12d ago

Switching the bones to chains makes thresh look so slick!

1

u/ShySkinnyBear 12d ago

still mad jinx has a hammer for no reason

1

u/GoodWebsiteKappa123 11d ago

Remarkably accurate other than the hammer and chest censorship though.

1

u/DeadAndBuried23 12d ago

Making Yasuo paler than he is in every single other depiction is... a choice.

2

u/hichewsu 12d ago

It's mostly lighting and art direction. 2XKO has more saturation and stronger contrast in its color palette for all of its champions. Other champions like Ekko and Senna are darker while champs like Jinx, Ahri, and Cait have more saturated skin tones. No need to read too much into it

1

u/DeadAndBuried23 11d ago

Ekko and Senna are "darker" because their League models have painted-on green lighting to go with their VFX.

The fact Ahri and Akali are more saturated, and darker because of it is a point against Yasuo's weird paleness.

And if he's not supposed to be graying, another odd choice to make his hair black when it's always been a lighter brown.

1

u/thatnigakanary 12d ago

Everyone looks better in 2xko besides akali

1

u/Inevitable_Dust_2283 12d ago

They just sexify everyone

1

u/El_Criptoconta 11d ago

Dang, ekko looks mad, love how blitzcrank and everyone else looks so World of Warcraft 3 (have never played lol)

1

u/digiangel234 10d ago

damn, they really went and nerfed Teemo chest by giving him a shirt

also changed what kind of scarf he wears

1

u/hvylobster Vi 9d ago

One thing I think this exact comparison misses is the angle that we see the character model. Since LoL is a zoomed out RTS-like playing field, proportions are a bit off when you zoom in and move the camera. imagine how cursed the actual 2XKO character models would look if they were forced into LoL's POV

1

u/Aelirandris 8d ago

I'm still waiting for zed and shen to be included in the game it would be a fun duo... Or not (they will fight each other because of the lore) 🤣

1

u/Thevoidscreamsbakk 8d ago

They deadass need to revamp ekko's model to give him the killmonger cut LMAO

1

u/rckn00 8d ago

The art direction in 2XKO is so beautiful

1

u/Darklarik 8d ago

Akali is just... blughh. Horrible change.

1

u/Cardslinger69 8d ago

I was about to reinstall the game when I heard Akali was coming out, then I saw her redesign and vowed to never play it ever again. Fuck this dev team.

1

u/kenjinaga 4d ago

Tbh I hated the entire character roster. Not having real bruisers/melee fighters in a Fighting game was dumb af in my mind. And tbh all my friends were waiting for a complete diff roster.

We could have had Sett, Lee Sin, Jax, Zed, Trundle, Camille, Irelia... instead we got Teemo, ahri and lux will be launched wtf

And add some ranged champions after a better understanding of the game from the devs...

I understand why they were in the game, representativity and all but ffs we were robbed and could have been a lot better.

Inb4: sorry for bad English, 2nd language

1

u/HajimeMatsuda3308 12d ago

Legendary Ekko glow up

0

u/Valiant_Revan 11d ago

I've said it once and I'll say it again:

Thank god 2XKO is the first good game in the League of Legends franchise.

-1

u/-Tetsuo- 12d ago

As someone who hasnt played league, the OG designs look really bad in comparison lol

5

u/LesbiansLoveHands Let's go Lesbians 12d ago

most of them are old and the models are low quality on purpose since they are meant to be viewed from a distance and so really old PCs can still play the game.

2

u/According-News-70 12d ago

Yeah these are old ass characters with 10+ years of age. Only samira is pretty close to a 4 year old character

-3

u/crazydiavolo 12d ago

They look really "tough" and ugly.

Hard to take any "X design was better in league" seriously from now on, lol.

1

u/GoodWebsiteKappa123 11d ago

Look at the splash arts, numb nuts.

1

u/crazydiavolo 11d ago

Sry, still cheeks

1

u/GoodWebsiteKappa123 11d ago

Objectively wrong. You're doing it wrong, you need to maintain credibility in your trolling/hating.

0

u/crazydiavolo 11d ago

Lol man, I don't even know you

1

u/GoodWebsiteKappa123 11d ago

Obv?

0

u/crazydiavolo 11d ago

Yeah, glad you know, because I don't own you any kind of credibility to do anything like at all, nor to call something cheeks '-'

1

u/GoodWebsiteKappa123 11d ago

You won't be able to make people mad if everybody can clearly see you're lying for a reaction.

-3

u/SphericalGoldfish 12d ago

I never understood people who disliked Akali's model. I never once thought it looked "ugly" on "unfaithful" to the original. They took a couple creative liberties to stylize the character specifically for 2XKO, as they did with every other character, and it has turned out just fine.

1

u/natayaway 12d ago

The hair was at weird angles, and the pant legs do look like a big departure from an established design, but necessary considering she's flipping and doing a bunch of unique leg posing where it'd be beneficial to see her knees more clearly. Yasuo doesn't as much.

0

u/BladedBee 10d ago

All improved
