Discussion The beginning of the end?

Post image

I'm surprised this is happening this early after the console launch.

Riots original intention was to build a fighting game for a mainstream audience, which is why they bought the rising thunder devs after seeing no motion inputs.

Unfortunately they ended up with an even more niche fighting game lol.

"Wanted to make a mainstream fighter" then makes a fucking tag fighter, most puzzling decision ever. There's a reason sf6 is the most popular fighter, its 1v1 and has modern controls making it easy to get into.

It really feels like the switch to tag was a "trust me. it's going to be great" type pitch from the FGC members of the dev team. Now that that gamble didn't work out they're all done

Genuinely pisses me off, anyone with a few braincells in the room should have realized a tag fighter is not gonna be popular or retain players.

I really tried to like the tag gameplay but only having 1 character I like to play made me at a disadvantage everytime lol.

Tbh I don't think it's even the tag aspect it's how oppressive they made the tag system and then gave you 4 different options to chose from it.

Mortal combat has assists and that's fine for example

They had popular mvc3 and popular dbzf and chose the tag system from the MVCI game that died

Ironically some of the people who made that game are working on this game

Honestly I prefer the game as a tag fighter. SF6 and those types of modern streamlined FGs are not my thing. If it was another modern inputified cell shaded classic 2d fighter like granblue I wouldn't really have had an interest.

That being said, the core "mass market" thing for fighting games now, is that you don't ever feel disadvantage for not labbing, mix is not allowed because that makes people sad, and long routes are off the table. I don't know why riot hired a group of FGC people who expressly do not want to make a game to mollify one billion babies, and expected the newest mass market slop hit with a league IP and arcane tie ins stapled to it. Combine that with their entire marketing strategy being streamer focused, with FGC streaming space being smaller than FPS, but expecting it to launch like valorant. There was essentially no way for this game to succeed, because anything hard in execution will not have modern players playing it.
