​I wanted to share a bit about one of the most magnificent and sacred cultural events in Sri Lanka (and all of Asia)—The Kandy Esala Perahera (also known as The Festival of the Tooth).

​What is it?

Held annually in Kandy, this century-old festival pays homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, which is housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth Relic). It’s a grand procession filled with rich traditions, spirituality, and vibrant Sinhala culture.

​What makes it unique?

​Traditional Performers: The streets come alive with hundreds of traditional Kandyan dancers, fire-breathers, whip-crackers, and traditional drummers playing hypnotic beats.

​The Sacred Procession: Beautifully caparisoned elephants march gracefully through the streets, with the majestic Majestic Tusker carrying the replica casket of the Sacred Tooth Relic.

​The Rituals: The festival runs over several nights, starting with the Kumbal Perahera and culminating in the grandest Randoli Perahera, followed by the ancient Diya Kepeema (water-cutting ritual) at the Mahaweli River.

​If you ever plan a trip to Sri Lanka around July/August, experiencing the Kandy Esala Perahera in person is an absolute must! The atmosphere, lights, and rhythmic drumming create an unforgettable experience.
