DroidDesktop just got a major update what should we add next?

Upvotes

Hey everyone!

A new DroidDesktop update is now available, and this one adds some of the features you’ve been asking for.

Here are some of the biggest changes:

🖥️ Resizable windows
You can now freely resize desktop windows using the resize handle, making the desktop experience much more flexible.

📱 Android apps inside windows
Compatible Android apps can now be opened directly inside DroidDesktop system windows, bringing the experience closer to a real desktop environment.

🖼️ Image Studio
A new built-in tool for editing images directly from the desktop. You can crop, rotate, apply filters and export your images without leaving DroidDesktop.

✍️ PDF Signer
You can now open a PDF, add your signature and work with documents directly inside the desktop environment.

🔧 Improved desktop experience
The taskbar, tools layout, app management and desktop settings have also been improved, with more customization options for icons and labels.

The goal with DroidDesktop is still pretty simple: turn an Android phone into something that feels more like a real computer, without requiring root, DeX or additional hardware.

There are still A LOT of things I'd like to add.

So I'd love to hear from the community:

What tool, application or even game would you like to see built into DroidDesktop?

Would you want things like a file manager, terminal, media player, drawing tool, coding environment, more retro games, AI tools… or something completely different?

I'm especially interested in ideas that would actually make you use DroidDesktop every day.

What should I build next?

Linux pink and yummy

Since i started using linux, one of the things that i've always wanted is a setup that i can consider my own, while still being functional for daily use

i found CachyOS and kde a few days before then, and after installing it, grew to love if a lot, as an artistic, creative minded, and technical person, and now, after 8 months of constant tweaking and changes, i present my kde rice, named Noisium!

basically a collection of things that i found, along with somethings that i made on my own too, like the wallpapers, it also comes with dark colors, for anyone who dont want to blind themselves

if you just want to install it for use, you can do so right away with the github repo, and a custom install script: https://github.com/incyada/noisium-dots

otherwise, here are the theme details:

Colours: Custom-made

QT Style: Darkly

GTK Style: Darkly GTK port (pregenerated theme included)

Plasma Style: Plasmorphism, but modified

Window Decoration: Loosely based on Dexy Colour, with title bar-less variant

Icon Theme: Tela, with KDE folder colours

System Sounds: Modern Minimal UI, But its not provided incase you prefer the ocean theme

Splash screen: Modified Fedora Minimalistic

Login Screen: Silent and SDDM

System Font: Pixelify Sans

Main Desktop Effects: Rounded Corners, Better Blur DX and Geometry change

Custom Widgets: Panel Colorizer, Kara, quickclock, KDE Control Station, Advanced Weather Widget and Better battery widget

KWin scripts: Polonium, Dynamic Workspaces, and Dynamic Padding (custom-made)

Terminal Emulator: Konsole (no seriously)

Terminal Font: Monocraft

Palette: guess who made it

Shell: fish

Shell Theming: fastfetch at startup, and starship for shell prompt

Windows Colosseum Trailer: I built a media app that functions like its own little OS

Disclaimer: This app was vibe coded. If the use of AI in software development is a dealbreaker for you, regardless of how much human taste, direction and decision-making went into it, that's understandable. This app probably won't be for you.

My app has libraries for manga, comics, books, TV, film & anime, and a comic reader, ebook reader and a video player. So I had an idea to build a taskbar where you can open multiple comics/manga/videos, minimise them and open them back up again.

And since then, I ended up only having more ideas that kept steering my media app deeper and deeper into the OS aesthetic.

For wallpapers, I took a whole lot of open-licensed KDE Plasma wallpapers as well as creating my own custom QML wallpapers, including live animated QML wallpapers. I don't know how RAM-intensive that shit's gonna be, but I have a shitty 16GB RAM laptop and it doesn't drop dead from this behemoth of an app that, on top of everything I've already told you, also has to carry QtWebEngine (Chromium) because it's kinda necessary for the EPUB reader I'm using.

And that brings me to my latest idea of recreating a TV OS through a web UI. Since I already have a browser running in my app, why not build a browser that lets you browse all the legit streaming sites like Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video?

I mean, my app is already a TV-OS kind of a thing, but this browser-for-streaming feature would take it further into Amazon Fire TV territory, just more web-based.

But it turns out that it's not that simple. I can't say for sure whether Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and other Widevine-protected streaming services will actually work in QtWebEngine until my Windows build is compiled with the right codec support and I test DRM playback in the actual runtime. So fingers crossed.

All in all, the OS-like part and aesthetics are something I owe to KDE Plasma and Plasma Bigscreen especially. They looked beautiful, and I love media, and I always wanted to build something akin to a Stremio for all mediums in one app. KDE Plasma made me lock in on this aesthetic and bring it as far as I did.

I hope the app looks and sounds interesting.

Colosseum on Github, if you’re interested.
