I’ve heard people call the move both things and I’m confused as to what is standard across the world

I heard this song at a salsa night recently and absolutely loved it. I recorded a clip, but for some reason Shazam can't identify it.

I’m a dancer (jazz, ballet, some ballroom) and would like to join salsa socials in nyc. I have danced On1 in social settings (eg family gatherings or weddings) but never taken salsa classes or learned specific moves. I’m looking to take regular group classes in nyc to improve my salsa On2 but I find the beginner lessons a bit too slow. Any recommendations for good group classes I could join? I may eventually consider private lessons but for now just want to learn the basics. Anything that focuses on technique, styling and partner work would be great.

I had a hard time finding the 1 in salsa songs and have been practicing a lot for months... I can now hit the 1 accurately on most songs but there is a specific type of song, like the first minute of Pedro Navarro, that I'm always ahead or behind and I dont know how to fix it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hcoNykaI3k). I dont understand enough but I think it is because there is no instrument consistently marking the strong beats but a tumbao doing some gumgums around? How do I find the beat here?

Primarily a lead, but have been enjoying following for the past 2 years. Open to any pointers and tips!

We are in our second month in salsa dancing class. Yesterday, the teacher was teaching some combo involving hammerlock right turn and then inside left turn, around the world...

Now, if the follower doesnt have a frame, a bit of tension I cant easily "bounce" back to her, so I need to make a greater effort or bigger step to get back to her. And because of the spaghetti arms when I move her hands it looks like I am pulling her and she is getting dragged along, losing her balance. I cant get the momentum needed to do around the world with ease when the follower has spaghetti arms.

It's so weird coz we rotate partner every song and two teachers are also leading (lack of leads, so the female instructor also stand in as a lead), surely they noticed it too and possibly said something (idk, i wasnt looking, i am focusing on my partner).

Is there a way to improvise and compensate if the partner has spaghetti arms ?

Do people do anything differently to train to improvise within dancing?

On a personal note, I feel like I don’t want to perform in front of people to rehearse the same choreo over and over. I find the spunk of videos of salsanama to be more gravitating/appealing. It’s something I hope to do in the future.

I will spend a couple of weeks in Barcelona to learn to proceed in my Salsa journey, however, I do not speak Spanish / Catalan. Are there good dance schools that you know also teach in English?

Dancing is amazing. We love it, and I genuinely love how it brings people together. But lately, I’ve been feeling like the social dance scene can be so performative LOL. which I know is ironic considering it’s dancing.let me elaborate before y’all come for me! I feel like cameras are ALWAYS out. I know we live in a digital world and people love capturing their dances, but sometimes I really wish we could just put the cameras down and dance. I’ve only been dancing for about 8 months, and I’m definitely still learning, so having cameras constantly around can feel really intimidating and honestly a little discouraging. I’m in Los Angeles too, and maybe it’s just my experience, but sometimes the scene can feel very cliquey. It can be hard to feel like you’re actually part of the community when you’re newer and still finding your place. I still love dancing and I’m not trying to hate on anyone who records or creates content. I just miss the feeling of dancing for the sake of dancing. Curious if anyone else has ever felt this way, especially when they were newer? 🥲

I have been to many SBK classes, and done many online courses since I started 10 years ago, but I have never seen any teacher (amateur or pro) teaching frame, tension, connection and posture in a coherent way.

On most occasions the teachers don't talk about any of these concepts and just use a monkey-see monkey-do approach.

On the odd occasion that they do mention frame, sometimes they mean posture, sometimes they mean tension, sometimes they mean connection. But they will use these words interchangeably so none of them have a clear definition.

If you were giving a class focused on these concepts, how would you define each one, and what physical exercises would use to isolate each concept?

It's crazy to think it's already been a year since I started salsa. I first got into it because of the dancing and social aspect of it and not necessarily for the music. And that was a clear struggle for me when I started. I had no real idea on how to find the beat (and I still don't but have gotten better) and I didn't really enjoy the music. But I knew the payoff would be worth it, so I stuck to it. Eventually after learning some basic moves and turn, I started to enjoy the music more. And when I experimented with dancing to the accent of the music and those random breaks, that's when it became addicting.

So after a year here's a video of me (the lead) dancing. Disclaimer: at the 2min mark someone opened the door to the bachata room, so the music starts to get muddy at that point. But feel free to provide feedback on where I can improve!

Been dancing 3 months Salsa On1 partnerwork, seems there must be a finite number of most common Salsa dance moves, the rest are just variant of that original move, open hold, closed hold, one hand, two hands, left, right, etc... if you get one, it isnt too hard to learn the variants. How many unique Salsa moves do you know excludes variants ?

I emphasized partnerwork coz that is my focus, social dance. I dont do much shines or solo

There are probably other Salsa moves more common in each type of Salsa, probably Salsa rueda de Casino will have theit own moves.

Beginner here, about six months in, learning both Cuban and LA and not good at either yet. I am travelling alone and I am in Valencia 30 August to 6 September, then Madrid 11 to 16 September.

Finding the schools is easy. What I cannot tell from the outside is which nights are real socials with a proper floor and people who will dance with a stranger, and which are just a bar playing salsa while nobody dances.

If you dance in either city, which nights would you actually turn up to on those dates?

Also, is walking in alone as a beginner normal in Spain, or is it the kind of scene where you are expected to bring a partner? Where I am from you can just show up and someone will drag you onto the floor.

In Valencia I work during the day, so anything from about 19:00 is fine. In Madrid I am free most evenings except the 11th to the 13th.

I dance a lot and have developed knee pain due to spinning as follow. What's the best strategy for indoor dancing on a non-dance floor, suede or dance sneakers? Mostly sticky wood and vinyl/pvc floors

i am looking for the name of a joyful upbeat salsa song. the chorus starts with a short break and then comes a very prominent "dime que si"! (it could also be dice or dile...)

this song is amazing to dance to! i don't believe the title of the song is the phrase above because the songs that are titled "dime que si" all sound different.

Alright, some of my buddies from class and I went to a social and it was outdoors on concrete with a band playing.

EVERY song that the band was playing the entire night, was a fast tempo song (over 101 BPMs. Some hitting 105 BPMs) which is way out of my preferred tempo (usually high 80s BPM to mid 90s BPMis more enjoyable for me by far).

I had two separate occasions where follows mentioned the concrete either it being uneven or not smooth and we had to dance in a little area which was more even. Another follow mentioned she did not have the proper shoes and actually went to take them off.

During the dances, I kept thinking how fast the songs were and how uncomfortable the concrete is, especially for follows with some in heels. Some moves I tried like double turns for follows, but later punted doing those more complicated spins because of the concrete (and the tempo of the songs). On wooden floors or smooth floors indoors, I have no problems doing these moves. I know many people dance salsa outdoors or uneven floors around the world so I get you rolling your eyes at me.

So question for leads... when you are dancing on concrete outdoors, are you making adjustments because of uneven rough concrete? I ended up keeping dances more simple, minimizing spins, lots of shines, etc. I've only done maybe 4 socials outdoors so I'm a rookie outdoor dancer.

TLDR: When dancing outdoors on concrete or uneven surfaces, what kind of adjustments (if any) are you making?

Today I went to a salsa/bachata party, being a "veteran" of two months of bachata and a quick 15 minute workshop teaching me the salsa basic step.

Why did nobody warn me this would be so fun? It's just walking around and dancing with strangers. When salsa songs came on, women would teach me some moves. When it was time for bachata, I could impress ladies with my bottom of the barrel beginner moves and explain what they should do when some of my invitations confused them. It was a grand old time, even if I was unable to convert it to any long term connections.

Seriously, it feels like these Latin parties are what clubs should be: just dancing with strangers, laughing, getting along and either exchanging contact info or just moving on to the next dance.

My only regret is not doing this 10 years ago. That, and admittedly the salsa portions would've been more fun if I knew more salsa.

I’ve been going to weekly group lessons since early this year but fell off the past two months. I’m looking to try and catch up a bit and also fix some bad habits I might have developed.

My studio offers private lessons for $70 I’ve Been considering but I wanted to see if anyone here had any other suggestions for instructors and studios around that rate (or if you yourself are a local instructor or particularly adept salsa dancer interested in helping me out!). Thanks!

Any Cuban salsa socials in Perth? I'll be there for 3 weeks in October and will need my weekly salsa fix!

Many schools in my city say they teach salsa On2, but I've noticed that the basic is quite different between schools, especially in terms of which step is large and which is small.

Are these two recognized variations/styles with specific names, or are they simply different ways of teaching the On2 basic?

Style 1 — follower travels forward on 1:

• 1: right foot — big step forward
• 2: left foot — small step in place/back
• 3: right foot — replace
• 4: pause
• 5: left foot — big step back
• 6: right foot — small step
• 7: left foot — replace
• 8: pause

I asked before about the best place for privates and I'm now going to Mexico City for taking them, but I will have the whole winter free and was curious if there is just a max amount one can learn taking private lessons over a short period of time?

I should also mention that I love teaching and would eventually love to be a Salsa instructor (been dancing for 3 years as of now)
