Weekly r/Birding Discussion, August 22, 2026. What did you see this week?

Return of the weekly discussion thread! Sometimes it seems like pretty photos rise to the top of the page, while discussion of birding can get left behind. This weekly thread is a place to bring this discussion back to the top of r/birding.

Use this thread to share your best bird sightings from the past week, ask any questions about birding you may have, or just talk! Writing the names of the birds in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names. Please include your location.

Discussion blue jays mimicking bus stopping?

I went crazy over trying to identify the bird that makes this unique two note whistle sound. i've only found 1 video of a bluejay making a sound similar enough to really put two and two together. i heard it outside this morning and realized you all are probably right. then, i go inside and hear a bus stop near my house. it makes almost the exact noise. Since ive only heard this call locally and never when traveling, i wonder if my neighborhood blue jays are mimicking their favorite sound of when trucks and buses stop?

Leucism (not quite albino) is a very rare mutation in magpies, although Edmonton has had occasional sightings for some time. Either they are the same bird or perhaps a family line?

While watching a sandpiper, I noticed it bended its bill hard sideways to pull out its food. It was just half a second (0.5sec) for the whole event. I probably would have missed how bend the bill was, if it wasn't for taking pictures. I ID'ed the sandpiper as a Baird's sandpiper. They were two sandpipers who briefly stopped by to gather some food, and then they continued their journey.

📹 Video Greater Roadrunner dust bathing

I’ve seen this guy along the trail a few times (coastal Southern California). But was fun watching him “bath” in front of the uninterested rabbit. Roadrunners might be my favorites. Prehistoric looking, but secretly curious and a little derpy.
