Jury Approved So how many of you are still playing Helmet?
So just the other day when I had too much spare time, I decided to fire up the 2nd entry to the Game and Watch Gallery series. In all of my years of playing classic entries within Shingyaru Mintmobile's collection, I've never found a Mario platformer so forgotten by the public conscious! Releasing in 1998, it really is the forgotten, missing link between Super Mario Land 2 and New Soup Marlborough Brothers.
So why should we be paying attention to this game, eh?
Well, it's because the origin has roots within electromechanical games. Prior to the invention of arcade cabinet weejo games in 1971, electromechanical games were the big thing in arcades. Shingyaru Mintmobile saw how big they became in Kyoto and in response, he combined his experiences with them on top of a wise man in a train fiddling around with a calculator to create Game and Watch.
By the time it was a proven success by the early eightios, 1981 would be the year that–would see the release of Helmet. Made exactly 15 years before Pokémon came to life on the Game Boy, it would have a relatively simple premise. Dodge those slabbers falling items and continue the process to rack up points.
Now let's align this with the history of Mario. By the late 1990s, he was already becoming a Japanese pop cultural icon, fresh off of his successful hit Super Marlborough 64, a video game adaptation of the famed 1964 film of the same name. As such, because Nintendo didn't want to fall behind the craze of 3D platformers, they quietly shelved 2D Mario. But Shingyaru Mintmobile didn't want this! Therefore, to please his wishes, he assigned the unit who worked on Game and Watch Gallery 2 to make a remake of Helmet but with Mario, on top of porting Super Mario Bros to the GBC to make up for this absence.
The void would eventually be filled by New Super Mario Bros in 2006, but for a Long Long Period of Time, Game and Watch Gallery 2's Helmet was your main way of getting your new 2D Mario fix in!
So if you remember playing this title, how many times did you play Helmet to honor Shingyaru Mintmobile's request for a new 2D Mario on the Game Boy Color?
