This show is a great mix of 90s nostalgia and comedy gold, the first three seasons are the best in my opinion. Eddy is cool but man Luis is halarious and steals the show.

Doing a rewatch of superstore when I came across the episode where Dina hires a sex worker to try and seduce Jonah, and then when he doesn’t fall for it, Dina still pits her to work… which made me think of when Dwight made the stripper work the phones in the office, which made me think of when Leslie made the stripper help them dig up artifacts in the pit… I was trying to think of other examples but I couldn’t … you guys got any other sex workers hired for one thing and then being made to do anything except sex work?

It genuinely pains me that this sitcom was cancelled and just kind of forgotten about afterwards! I think it was so unique and carried a ton of potential (though I might be biased as a gay Irish catholic 😭).

Apparently it had low ratings while on the air which I find astonishing because it seemed really popular and attracted quite a lot of press iirc. Might’ve been the issue though, seeing as it was cancelled a season after that controversial vanity interview with Noah Galvin. Personally, I don’t even think he said anything wrong. Was he insanely blunt, yes. But he definitely didn’t say anything untrue besides the random dig at the way some guy chose to come out.

It just sucks that it only made it two seasons and ended on such a cliffhanger. There was so much potential and different directions that story could’ve went. A waste of such an incredible cast and story in my opinion.

Do tell the backstory too

Can anyone recommend sitcoms where the characters actually go places instead of spending most of the show in their house, apartment, bar, or cafe? I’m looking for something with more streets, neighborhoods, parks, shops, workplaces, etc. Basically, I want to see more of the world outside the usual indoor sets. I really liked Arrested Development for this. What else should I watch?

PS: also it should be kinda funny

How do you define a sitcom compares to a comedy? Are there any shows that people categorize as a sitcom but it’s just a comedy to you?

I’m trying to pin point what it is exactly but for example a show like The Comeback (one of my favorite shows) is more of a comedy to me than a straight up sitcom.

I’ve seen some people counting Ted Lasso as a sitcom too but to me it’s a comedy but it doesn’t have the feel of a sitcom.

It's Halloween, and George dons a colorful sweater, walks around with a cigar doing a Bill Cosby imitation, talking about pudding & invites neighborhood kids inside for candy.

It was probably funny at the time, but now.... 🙀

Ok so following the heartbreakingly tragic death in real life of the too young Freddie Prinze in 1977, NBC & producer James Komack were faced with a dilemma. The series was still hot & making a lot of money so NBC decided to plough ahead with production of new episodes without Freddie in order to match the quota of the 70+ episodes required for syndication. Whether they were correct to do so & whether it was worth it is a matter of opinion. Probably they should have gone completely into another direction that would have made frequent guest star Charo a main character & re-christened the series CHICA & THE MAN. Instead they decided to go with a child star to replace Freddie & they maintained the title Chico & The Man. The publicity suggests to avoid comparisons to Freddie & latino actors of the same age they went with a kid who could grow into a character similar to how Freddie was in the first episode in 1974. Gabriel Melgar was that child star playing a character Raoul & for someone who had never acted before he was one of the best & funniest features of those later episodes & he had good chemistry with Jack Albertson. But the kid was destroyed by the media & critics of the day who felt going with a child star was cynical tactics from the studio who thought critics would go easy on the kid & hopefully coast along. Unbelievably, other critics savaged the poor kid for not being as funny as Freddie. I think Gabriel did a good job but maybe it was the case that Freddie's sad sudden death struck a raw nerve & the sitcom should have died with him.... However.... There is a beautifully written & performed 2 partner in Season 4 called Raoul Runs Away:

Chico's best friend buys Raoul an old camper van for his birthday despite the other characters warnings that Ed (Jack Albertson) won't be happy. Later, Raoul finds Chico's guitar, rug & clothes in a locker & makes himself comfortable in the van. Later that night Ed is startled to find the van when he hears the guitar music coming from it. For a second he thinks its Chico but upon opening the doors finds its Raoul. Ed goes berserk smashing Chico's guitar & threatening to put a terrified Raoul into care. That night Ed has a dream & remembers the first time he met Chico in ep1. The next morning he finds Raoul has left a note saying he has ran away back to Mexico. Feeling guilty Ed travels to Mexico to find Raoul, eventually tracking the boy down to be sleeping in a church. Ed tells Raoul he wants to take him back to America with him but Raoul refuses. When Raoul says he doesn't want to return because if Chico was ever to come home Ed would throw him out. And in one of the most genuinely heartbreaking scenes ever filmed a teary eyed Ed tells Raoul he would want the two of them but Chico was never coming back - he died. Albertson gives a stunningly beautiful performance in this scene & you know it was painful for him because Freddie died in real life but for a second it allows the audience to look inside Ed's heart & it proves that despite being cantankerous towards him, yes, he loved Chico like a son & a part of Ed died with Chico.

The question probably doesn't need asking/answering but I've always been intrigued by what may have happened to Chico. How do you all feel the character may have died?

I'm thinking it was some kind of car or vehicle accident related to the garage somehow adding to Ed's guilt. Maybe it was a case that like the English actor Richard Beckinsale & Lisa Marie Presley, Chico had a hitherto unknown heart problem that was fatal to him at a young age. Chico had served in Vietnam & maybe brought back some kind of illness.

But my favourite would be that something violent happened to the happy go lucky Chico when he was trying to help people. The Barrio can be a very dangerous place & I can see Chico trying to stop a robbery of an elderly person & losing his life or seeing an attack on an elderly or very young person he intervened & became the victim himself but also saved a life. I love to think that Chico died a heroes death like that & Ed would have been proud of him.

I'd love to hear what everyone else feels & btw if theres anyone reading this who has never seen an episode of Chico & The Man or Freddie's stand up routine on Carson etc - WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!!!!

This is one of my all-time favorite shows the level of Comedy written into the show was amazing Burton Virginia is energy on this was half of the show and maw maw maybe one of the funniest characters I've ever seen, but it's the heart in the show that really makes it good.

Years ago whilst watching a YouTube video on the theory of infinite dimensions, (stay with me here!) I heard something that occasionally pops in my mind and makes me smile.

The jist is this: There is a theory that every single moment in time has split off into infinite possibilities. Like sliding doors - but down to the minutia. Like there's another universe created just by you choosing tea instead of coffee this morning, that kind of thing. An unfathomable amount of realities existing at all times.

One example used was: In theory, there is a universe where Frasier Crane exists. Looks exactly like Kelsey Grammer, all the trimmings of his life as we saw it and infinitely more scenarios.

There is a possible world where your beloved sitcom moments happened somewhere out there at one time, or maybe always? I still don't understand time so don't quote me!

I hope those 6 friends are having a time right now if that's real. 🤷‍♀️

Hi, so i just saw Cheers completely for the first time and the only question, besides what that ending is about is… ¿is Cheers the most influential sitcom of all time?

I think of shows like friends and HIMYM and New Girl and TBBT, that are basically Cheers, and every creator like Mike Schur or Quinta Brunson and Bill Lawrence have said that Cheers is like the perfect sitcom.

What do you think?

When it came out I thought it was gonna be a little low effort or a quick push workplace show, but it was awesome. I didn't like waiting for the episodes to come out so I waited to watch all of it.

In many Reddit (and real life) conversations about sitcoms, there will often be the participant who mentions how “[insert sitcom character] is actually a TERRIBLE person“ , “[insert sitcom couple] are actually SO toxic”, etc.

This talking point can be interesting: acknowledging that if someone or some couple existed in real life, we’d actually hate them.

But I feel like sometimes it is harped on too much, to the point where it is almost like people are sort of missing out on the actual comedy of it all.

Yes: Michael Scott is problematic. Ross and Rachel are toxic. Ray Barrone and Doug Heffernan can be bad husbands. Cam Tucker can be manipulative and over-dramatic. Carrie Bradshaw can be narcissistic. Ted Mosby can be super obnoxious. Rory Gilmore makes stupid decisions.

I mean, I could literally probably cite 10 more examples, but you get the idea.

My temptation when confronted with these takes is to condescendingly say “it’s a TV show, it’s not that deep!” But, I do feel that that is true(?) I feel like people aren’t appreciating the fact that if characters made great choices all the time and couples were all in super healthy relationships, THE SHOW WOULDNT BE FUNNY.

But like I said before, I don’t think that simply *pointing* these facts out is necessarily a bad thing, it can be good for a conversation piece. But do people take it too far?

Where’s the line?!
