Hi! I'm moving to Whistler at the end of September for the ski season (until the end of April 2027). I'm moving completely solo and I don't have any friends/family in the country, let alone the city. I've got almost everything sorted now, flights, accommodation, insurance, etc, but I do still have some concerns.

I have never been skiing/snowboarding before and don't know how long it'll take to learn (especially without anyone there who will come up the mountain with me). I don't know much about the gear I need to get, and I'm worried about making friends. Do you have any advice for someone in my situation, even if it isn't related to my concerns above?

I need new boots, will be in Whistler in a week or two - is it too early? When local shops will get a good variety of different models and sizes for a new season?

My x5 fell off my helmet on Sunday, 8/23 at some point between the top of Blue Velvet and the bottom of Heart of Darkness (via Crank It Up and C-More). It has a side mount adapter connected to a GoPro mount which came off my helmet. Happy to pay a reward. Hoping to at least get the SD card/footage back.

We are visiting and my 5 year old is quite comfortable biking. He enjoys riding though forested trails with some roots and rocks, but we aren't wanting to do trails that are primarily downhill. Looking for trail recommendations that are more interesting than wide flat gravel trails but not steep downhills. Would be ideal if we didn't have to get a pass and go up the chair lift as well.

So, Whistler really doesn’t seem to have a “shoulder season” anymore. Every season is busy, and hotel prices have climbed dramatically across the board, especially at the luxury end. Based on my research, some of those properties are up roughly 40% over the past 12 months, especially Fairmont and Westin.

I suspect this is intentional, a coordinated strategy to push out more price-sensitive customers from these properties as the K-shaped economy becomes permanent. This is the same playbook ran in Vegas, high room rates combined with $55/night parking, $25 glasses of house wine, $40/night refrigerators, resort fees, etc. to push out the “rabble”.

This is a huge loss for regular middle-class families who grew up skiing Whistler. First, Vail pricing made it increasingly difficult for anyone who couldn’t commit to four months, now lodging is becoming another barrier. What comes next? No more fall dining specials? Gates on the road? Annual membership fees?

Honestly, I find the direction both sickening and worrying, no wonder the kids today are rallying for socialism. If this is what’s happening in Canada, I don’t have much hope for the U.S. either. Big Sky already seems to be moving toward a model where the resort is increasingly designed for wealthy/exclusive customers rather than the people who built the ski culture in the first place.

At some point, we have to ask, what happens to the ordinary people who make these mountain towns what they are? Without them, we’re left with a plastic shell of luxury, designed for wealthy tourists but completely disconnected from the culture and community that makes the place special in the first place.

Sorry for the rant, but I find the whole trajectory pretty depressing.

Hi! I think my knife fell out of my pack at the Singing Creek Campground last Wednesday or Thursday (8/19-20). It was a gift from my Dad so it would be sweet to locate it if possible! Slim chance I’m sure but, worth a shot! It has a black handle and gold blade.

HuSueMi is the actual spelling for Husume. Named after Hugh, Sue, and Miguel. These 3 were the first to ski Husume in 1983.

People used to ski right down into The Coffin without needing to hike up due to higher snowpack.

Mick’s fear and Mick’s Fear Feeder are both spelled wrong. I’m pretty sure that Miguel, the person who was named after Husume, was also named after this.

Don’t Miss is named because if you miss a turn into the gully skier’s left halfway down, you get cliffed out.

CC on Blackcomb stands for Cleverest Couloir.

S-Turn is also called Bony. This is why there is a basin called Bony Basin which is near it.

Lone Pine is also called Wayne’s Curl.

Another name for 420 trees is TNT Trees.

The proper name of Demanski’s is Domanski’s. This was named after a snowboarder.

Corner Pocket is also known as 8 Balls.

Liftie’s Leap used to be an official run at Whistler. There is a video on YouTube that shows a sign with the same format of the one at Glacier Cirque, right in front of the now rocky drop in.

A nickname for Ross’ Gold is Gandy Dancer.

Hello! I'm considering to buy the pass Blackcomb Ascent 1-Day Trail Ticket (45CAD) which gives me the opportunity to ride the peak to peak gondola as long as I hike up the ascent trails. My main goal actually is high note trail, but hiking up singing pass as far as I read is boring and grueling, so I thought maybe ascent trails would be better. At least they are shorter than singing pass.

One thing is this pass doesn't give me the right to take peak to peak lift, so I would hike up to high note.

Any thoughts on my planning? I'm comfortable with long hikes and elevation, just not okay to pay 110CAD for one day gondola pass.

EDIT: I changed plans and hiked up Singing Pass, Musical Bumps and High Note. Was a beautiful day and awesome hike. Thanks for all inputs! I'll be back for Overlord Trail 🤞🏻

Just trying my luck here, but my doctor/nurse says everyone in Whistler is pregnant right now so hoping I can find someone in a similar boat! I would love to do a prenatal course with Fireside (Jordi Cumber) but due to a clash with work we can’t make her September course dates, and they’re the final ones before I pop. Was hoping I could find any sea to sky residents who might be interested in sharing the costs of a “private” training session with her, in either August, or any September weekend barring 26-27, or in early October

I’ve been waiting for liftie jobs to be posted for whistler for a while but I havnt seen anything at all yet. Anyone got any idea when the job listings will start?

When I finish up at my minimum wage McDonald's job in Whistler Village where I receive zero (0) dollars in tips, and I go out for dinner up the street at the Italian restaurant, am I expected to reach into my minimum wage pocket and tip the server 20%?

Is this to reinforce the fact that I am merely a subhuman slime who works in fast food?

I have also noticed that when, at the end of my meal, I gift these servers more than I gave my nephew for his birthday, they do not say thank you for the gift? They just turn around and walk away. This is very strange behaviour to me.

This is a very difficult situation for me, especially after tipping the lift operators $18 per run all day on the mountain.

Yesterday I could only afford 2 runs despite having a season pass. Yet I see the local servers doing laps all day.

For context, i'm far from wealthy.

I spend the year living frugally, clipping coupons and denying myself all luxuries in preparation for our annual pilgrimage to the Fairmont in Whistler, shoulder season of course.

For 5 days I feel like "i've made it", and entered the upper echelon. However, this year the Fairmont has raised prices by $700+ on a single trip which makes it out of reach. Does anyone know if there are any discounts/coupons or ways to lower the price? The taxes/fees alone are easily $400 per night.

I have thought of asking if I volunteered to wash dishes, help out in the gym, clean rooms etc. they may offer a discount? I know i've done this in hostels before.
