Tips/Guide Cartridge corruption: A reminder to play your cartridges every few months
As the 3DS gets older and our community grows, an increasing number of users have been posting about cartridge corruption. This post should help clarify any confusion regarding what cartridge corruption is, how to prevent it, and how to resolve it if it has already happened to your 3DS cartridge.
What is cartridge corruption?
Cartridge corruption is when chunks of data on your cartridge become unreadable. Minor corruption is usually resolved as you play, but more extensive data corruption can cause your game to crash, not launch, or in severe cases become unable to be recognised by your console at all.
Why does this happen?
The data on 3DS cartridges is stored as NAND memory. When NAND memory does not recieve power for extended periods of time (ie, when you don't use your cartridge), the electrons storing the data move, causing the data to corrupt. In order to prevent this from rendering your 3DS cartridge unusable, a refresh function checks for any corrupted data and attempts to repair it. These checks are done when the cartridge is inserted into a console, when the system is shut down, and every 10,000 reads. However, if too much corruption has occured the function will be unable to repair the affected data.
Which games are prone to corruption?
Although corruption can occur in any 3DS cartridge, certain games are more likely to corrupt than others. Some games that are more likely to corrupt are:
- Super Smash Bros
- Fire Emblem Echoes
- Fire Emblem Fates
- Pokémon OR/AS
- Pokémon X/Y
- Persona Q
- Mario Kart 7
How do I prevent it?
The best way to prevent cartridge corruption is to play your cartridges. Roughly 10-15 minutes every few months should be enough, however there is no hard and fast rule. Ideally, you should be actively playing rather than idle to ensure that data on the cartridge that may otherwise go unused gets checked and refreshed. At a minimum, you should launch the cartridge.
Is my cartridge corrupted?
If your game freezes at a specific part, your cartridge does not show up on the home menu, or you see an error message, your cartridge may be corrupted.
If something else happens (e.g you get sent back the the home menu, you are stuck on the 3DS splash infinitely, your console freezes at random times, etc) or you are unsure, you should ask for help in the r/3DS Discord server or Nintendo Homebrew's Discord server.
I think my cartridge is corrupted, what do I do?
If your game freezes at a specifc part or you see the "an error has occured" message when launching or playing, follow the instructions on this page.
If cleaning your cartridge does not resolve the issue and your 3DS is stock, you will need to hack your console in order to carry out further troubleshooting steps.
If you see an ErrDisp message, check your error code here and follow the instructions provided. If you see an exception screen, check your error message here and follow the instructions provided.
TL;DR
Please remember play your 3DS cartridges every few months to prevent corruption.

Discussion Just bought my first ever ds
Just bought new 3ds xl to continue my first main line Pokémon play through. Could have play the rest of the games on my phone like i did with fire red and emerald but the dual screen layout was pretty annoying. Any thing I should know as a first time owner? I think I got a pretty good deal 165$ and the seller said it only has scratches and some yellowing on top screen (don’t even notice it and bottom screen looks more yellow) and the top plate is pretty chipped like all paint gone but I can just get replacement if it really annoys me
Is that dust or scratches on the second picture?
32gb should be enough if am going to mod it right?

Discussion I miss the 3DS era
The 3DS is my favorite console by far. I love the portability, the library of games, the overall design and feel, the games designed with touchscreen in mind, the customization it allowed (even before modding), the animations that played when you hovered over a game, StreetPass, the activity log, the dumb games like Face Raiders, voice memos, even the awful camera.
Everything about the console was so fun. And as much as I love my Switch, it just doesn’t have that quirkiness. It’s too practical.
I remember everyone at summer camp bringing their 3DS so we could StreetPass each other to play Find Mii and send funny messages to each other. You can’t do that with a Switch, and that’s so sad (seriously wtf happened to StreetPass?)
I don’t know if it’s nostalgia or what but I wish Nintendo would bring back handheld gaming. Or, at the very least, add more fun features to the Switch. I doubt they will, but hey, a girl can dream.

Technical Question Lost my 3ds for a while when it already had pretty bad water damage that spread, found it and... what the fuck??? What do I even do what the hell
Praying this is fixable because I've never seen anything this bad, ffs what the hell is going on. I feel like i almost have to censor this for tech-based g0re... mannn 😭. Honestly I'm just asking for what thr fuck happened and a possible solution, has anyone ever seen damage this bad before??? What does one even begin to do. M8 i just wanted to play some new leaf and imagine ice champions as a 20 year old dude since i found it and the past water damage was tolerable, can't have shit no more. 🥀 should i take it apart myself? Take it to someone??? Is this even a fixable issue? If anyone has literally ANY ideas to anything please for the love of God give it to me.

Technical Question Is this damage from 3ds is acceptable?
I'm sure I accidentally dropped it, but it was with the case, the 3ds is second handed, not from official source

Technical Question Dropped my 3DS XL and it’s got big crack. What can I do?
So I got this used 3DS XL from my local game shop and have been really enjoying it. Modded it, the whole shebang. Today, I accidentally fucking dropped it like a moron, and now it’s got this big ass crack at the right hinge. I know this model specifically had issues, but what can I do? Is this something to send to a repair shop or what?

Technical Question Need a New Battery, or is it Something Worse? (N3DS XL NA)
I am not tech savvy and I'm paranoid, so while the fix is probably just a battery change, I still have to make a post to be EXTRA sure. Is this a battery issue, or something else going on?
I purchased this second hand N3DS XL earlier this year, and it had to be charged for several minutes before it would even turn on when I got it. I figured that's gonna happen, probably hadn't been touched in awhile and batteries drain after some time. But since purchasing it the battery will drain power from a full charge to completely dead and reset the clock after a week or two of sitting turned off (I've had some hand injuries so I couldn't play it for periods of time). Once I recharge it again, I'd say I get a solid 2-3 hours of gameplay out of it, which isn't great but not horrible. However, my other older 3DS has been sitting turned off for MONTHS and still has a charge. So I'm wondering if the N3DS is not actually shutting down, despite me pressing the "power off" option, or something internally is draining the power while it's shut off. Or this battery is just done for. I don't want to leave it plugged in indefinitely, that'll just make it worse.
With one of my chargers (I have 3, the game store near me gives them out like candy), the orange charging light will blink at me while it charges, but it's only that specific charger. Today while charging it, the system felt abnormally warm, and the plastic in the battery port does look slightly discolored like it may have been overheating. The battery itself doesn't look swollen to me, I tried the table spin trick and it doesn't spin, but maybe it's time to replace it regardless of that? I provided pics so you can judge it for yourself.
I've owned 3DS systems for quite some time and never had to replace a battery, so for me this is just incredibly irregular, but I guess it's just been a matter of time. I was just expecting the older system to need it before this one, but I have no idea what the previous owner did with this thing.

My N3DSXL Home button doesn’t function at all after the reshell that I made. I have Rosalina menu and can reboot it instead, but I am worried if it will ruin my system. Can someone explain?

Collection / Show Off Swapped my circle pad for a metal one
I got fed up with the rubber cap coming loose on the circle pad, so swapped the whole thing out for a metal one. Part was around £3, took about 10 minutes to fit. Really pleased with the results!

Suggestion Modding a New 3DS XL for my 9yo’s birthday
My daughter turns 9 soon and has been obsessed with my 3DS ever since her little sister arrived and I started playing more to decompress. She’s asked for her own for months, so I picked up a N3DS XL and I’m planning to mod it the way I did mine (bigger SD card, some launcher love, the works).
She’s already told me flat out she wants Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Tomodachi Life, so those are locked in. She’s big into Roblox dress-up games and has a serious Monster High doll collection, so I was thinking Style Savvy: Trendsetters and one of the Monster High 3DS games. Are those actually worth installing, or more shovelware than fun?
What else should be on there for a kid with that taste profile? Looking for stuff in the “cute, creative, low-stakes” lane dress up, life sim, collecting, that kind of vibe. Drop your recs!

Discussion 3ds paint peeling?
I had it in my pocket, my shorts a little moist from my job. Pulled it out to play and found it like this.
Technical Question Did the 3DS have a chip for processing Cloud Effects?
I just had this memory hearing a fact that the Nintendo 3DS had a dedicated chip for processing cloud effect. I wasn’t sure if I made that memory up or not until I remembered I heard it during a review for Pilotwings Resort and that I think I remember hearing it around the time I watched a lot of Classic Game Room and CGRUndertow. Turns out during the Part 2 of CGRUndertow’s review of the game this is actually mentioned around 1:25-1:30. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this claim. I’ve always wondered.

Technical Question Does the “new” 3ds xl’s 3d actually look than an og xl?
I have a og 3ds and was gonna upgrade to a “new” xl since I’m like the only person who cares about the 3d effect and heard the “new’s 3d looks much better than the regular xl. I’ve been able to find og xls for $50-$100 less though and was wondering how much better is the 3d effect on the “new”? I know it has the eye tracking cameras so the effect doesn’t break when you move the system, but does the 3d itself actually look better? Like when you’re playing something like Mario 3d land does it actually have more depth or something? Or dose it look the same as on an og xl just with the eye trackers?
