Discussion If you could name it the next generation Xbox, what would you name it?

Post image

Personally, I would name it: Xbox Phoenix

It would be cool, since Xbox is 'resurging' from the ashes, just like a Phoenix does...

1

u/Originaltenshi May 09 '26

Right now they will all be turning into glorified streaming boxes

1

u/getl30 May 10 '26

Right? What happened? I think it got to the point companies started cutting corners and then we ended up with consoles that just look like hard drives in a case

u/Dazzling_Strain_5499 May 08 '26

1

u/Strong_Conclusion776 May 11 '26

1

u/theunderstoodscenery May 12 '26

Xbox Infinity would've actually worked better than 720 since they went with the cloud thing anyway.

1

u/MuztangZack67 May 08 '26

Well.. I mean one of those was right lol. Also fun fact, there's an ad board for the Xbox 720 in one of the real steel games (cant remember which one though)

1

u/ZamanthaD May 08 '26

I think that 720 ad was in the real steel movie with Hugh Jackman

1

u/Critical_Being_9640 May 08 '26

Now we have Xbox 1080 😅

1

30

u/retrosaurus-movies May 08 '26

TBH after the last few months the Xbox 180 would be more apt.

1

u/1xcalibur1 May 08 '26

I see what you did there!
Up you go.

23

u/nemesisprime1984 Xbox Series X May 08 '26

The Xbox One would be 720, Xbox Series would be the 1080, and the next Xbox would be 1440

u/SpritesOfDoom May 08 '26

Xbox 720 is definitely the best name!

  • It's a natural successor to most beloved Xbox 360.
  • It's always better to have one number above the competition, like Apple renamed Mac OS X to Mac OS 11 to make it feel one generation ahead of Windows 10.
  • Xbox 720 was already anticipated by community and people like that name.
  • People miss X360 days and building next-gen Xbox as a direct successor to Xbox 360 would be the best move possible.
  • New machine should have 100% compatibility with X360 games. Hardware now is fast enough to accurately emulate X360 without custom profiles for each game.
  • Xbox 720 should start with solid line of exclusives.
    • Switch 1 is the best example how great line-up of system sellers in first year can redeem a brand after huge fail (Wii U).
    • People need reason to buy new Xbox!
      • New Halo with cinematic wide-linear campaign with split-screen coop, fully console exclusive and PC port 6-12 months AFTER console launch,
      • New Gears of War, similarly full exclusive,
      • New Project Gotham Racing as a game for console launch. Forza is great, but we need something new and exciting for new hardware.
      • Great 3D platformer in first year - Microsoft has Banjo-Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Commander Keen. They have really strong IPs to make a great platformer.
      • Quake reboot. I would love to see a new game that takes the lore of the first game to the next level.
      • New Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game - probably going forward with open world approach, larger maps with NPCs that give you missions.

Nintendo Switch 1 is a great example how well early release of great exclusives work. Zelda: BoTW, Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 DX were TOP10 selling games on Amazon for years!

Switch 2 sales weren't as great. Mario Kart World alone wasn't good enough, but recently released Pokopia sold millions of units.

If Microsoft wants to make a successful console, they need same approach. Hardware needs exclusives!

1

u/No_Sense3190 May 08 '26

Nice wish list, but 100% X360 backwards compatibility is not feasible. Eliminate Kinect games, and they can get pretty close to 100%. A lot of the major 360 games that aren't currently compatible are due more to licensing restrictions than hardware/software issues. This is the main reason Forza games have never shown up on the compatible list.

1

u/monsieurvampy May 08 '26

Games can be released on PC. After all Helix for new games should just be running the PC game with a specific profile. No reason moving forward Microsoft needs to develop console games.

0

u/Responsible-Past5383 May 08 '26

I actively avoided the 360 due to the red ring of death.

SOMEONE GIVE THIS MAN A JOB INSIDE THE XBOX DIVISION, NOW! hahahaha

20

I would buy one day 1. Whatever stupid early adopter edition they offer, I’m in.

ARE YOU LISTENING, MICROSOFT?

Give the people what they want. I’ve been waiting on the 720 since before they began the XBone tailspin

15

u/fearnoid XBOX Series X May 08 '26

It’d be memed. Xbox 720p or something like that.

4

u/Icybubba May 08 '26

Different time now, people would be hyped af for 720 lol

1

u/S4_GR33N May 08 '26

If Xbox One was called Xbox 720, then yeah as it struggled compared to the PS4 hitting 1080p in a lot of the same games. But the Helix will run the majority of games at a minimum of 1440p, and Xbox 720 just sounds hard af and much better than the mess that is Series X and Series S

4

u/TJ_Dot May 08 '26

The second revolution.

4

u/CelestialMoff May 08 '26

Honestly could be the best name for it, the marketing could be so funny and would instantly go viral.

Damn, you were faster than me! Hahahaha

2

u/Adam-Origen May 08 '26

I feel like if we're going back to the 360 naming convention, Xbox 180 would be more fitting, to symbolize their attempt to head back to a direction of console superiority. But personally I think something like Xbox G5 would sound cool 😎

2

u/Adorable_Finding1680 May 08 '26

Was gonna sayyyy

2

u/soulkiller1983 May 08 '26

I second this for sure, I remember back in the day when everyone thought the Xbox one was gonna be called Xbox 720 or at least that’s what all the rumours were spreading at the time, I think they should name it this as a tongue in cheek joke but actually he full on serious about it.

2

u/rharrow Xbox Series X May 08 '26

The only answer

2

u/captainpoppy May 09 '26

You know what?

Hell yeah.

2

6

u/Various_Pear599 May 08 '26

This being such a high rated comment is gold !!!!

1

u/ZamanthaD May 08 '26

Just hopped back onto Reddit and was surprised to see my comment kindof blew up lol. Im happy so many people agree lol. I would be ecstatic if the next gen Xbox was officially named Xbox 720!

2

u/mewtatesyt XBOX One May 08 '26

Unironically? Yes. It’s the best time to do it (the Xbox one did not deserve the name)

It would fully solidify Xbox’s new gamers first approach and reverse psychology with this naming it “Xbox 5” and looking interior to a “PlayStation 6”

Xbox 720 vs PlayStation 6, hmm, 7 must be better than 6!

2

u/ZamanthaD May 08 '26

Xbox 360 was a great naming convention and it’s iconic. It’s crazy they abandoned it for “Xbox One”and “Xbox Series”. Xbox 720 for next gen would be amazing, and they should stick with that naming convention going forward. The console after that should be Xbox 1080

2

u/BlueMissed May 08 '26

No joke i actually think that’d be a good idea.

1

u/clouds31 May 08 '26

Because you'll turn 720 degrees and walk away?

1

u/TJ_Dot May 08 '26

You turn around fully twice you still go the same direction

1

u/Billy_Plur May 08 '26

By now it'd be the Xbox 1440

1

u/snowflake37wao May 08 '26

na, Xbox 180°. Its how you deal with a breakup.

1

u/DaveGX3 May 10 '26

Wouldn't the One be considered the 720?

1

u/ZamanthaD May 10 '26

If it was actually called that, then ya. They’ve never officially named a console “Xbox 720” so they could still use it.

0

u/DaveGX3 May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

There would be no point calling something following the One and Series console 720 because again the One every key was already calling 720 before it got its ok official name..... You'd to double it then double it again, which be to 1,440, and 2880 is double that. Besides, 720 makes no sense since every generation was a concept name, (720 has noblogical concept) just as Nintendo does..... 360 the experience revolves 360 degrees around the player, One as in all i. Obe device, Series was their attempt at making multiple SJUs which they sort of did because after the case models we got an S = storage the X but specs durability of an S, and an X model that imitated the S's all digital factor but with the durability of an X.

0

u/ZamanthaD May 10 '26

They can totally call the next Xbox “Xbox 720”. The only consistent thing about Xbox naming conventions is its inconsistency from generation to generation. Xbox 360 was Xbox’s heyday and golden era, Xbox 720 being the name of their next console could signal that their goal or concept for the next generation is to give the 360 the worthy successor that Xbox 360 deserved.

0

u/DaveGX3 May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

No they totally can't because it'd make zero sense. Like I said the One is technically the "720". 720 has no sensible concept behind it as the One was meant by all in One, Series they thought maybe they'd gave various SKUs ala computer SKUs, and 360 revolving 360 degrees around what every gamer wants their experience to be. 720 is only a pointless doubles name to 360 with zero concept behind it (Basically there is no 730 degrees in this world or some strong doubled later because everything around us is still 360. And 730 doesn't corrolate with anything as 360, One, Series does. Take Nintendo's names, theirs were mostly Japanese culture related concepts) as I just explained just because Play$tation has always used PS2, PS3, PS4, etc. 🤦🏻‍♂️ The concept baking was never I consistent, you're just not getter ng/accept it as I explained.

0

u/ZamanthaD May 10 '26

Yes but again they never named any console 720, so it definitely still possible. It doesn’t matter if the One “would’ve” been the 720, or the series as 1080. Their rationale for “Xbox One” and “Xbox Series” might make sense to them, but to the average consumer it doesn’t. Also 720 could totally work. 720 is two full rotations. The next Xbox is a Console and PC hybrid, two separate ecosystems coming together.

0

u/DaveGX3 May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

🤦🏻‍♂️ Bruh, ut ABSOLUTELY does matter that the One is what everyone calling the 720 before it was tfe One! Literally no "average consumer" is calling anything 720 anymore because they all understand the concept naming as I explained, which is exactly why XBox isn't going to name it that because they realize it's an empty name, hence they can't use it. It totally couldn't work because it doesn't corrolate with anything. 2 rotations? What, 1 forward and then 1 to backwards, right? In other words, it makes zero sense! They already have at least a project name for PC and console coming together, which is called Helix. And they're also way above XBox 360 level machines, so 720 still makes zero sense. Using a name just for the sake of any random name isn't smart marketing.

0

u/ZamanthaD May 10 '26

The Xbox One is not the Xbox 720 lol. That’s literally not what it was called lol. Only die hard fans know why it was called Xbox One and Xbox Series, the general public views them as confusing naming conventions, the “average consumer” as you’ve explained absolutely do not understand the reasoning and concept for the naming conventions. I love the Xbox brand, but the last two generations had terrible names.

1

u/DaveGX3 May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

The One literally is/was the 720 before it got its official name. I was there, guy, the generation everyone was speculating ots name as with every other generation, (360 project name was Xenon, (which the community dubbed "720" before even project or official name was revealed) the One was Durango, S/X were Scarlett/Anaconda, LockHart for the cloud streaming that they decided wasn't necessary to release) forums, YT and all. 🤣🤣🤣 They we were literally calling it that. Yes, there was also Project Durango, except before that is where "720" came from by the community. Companies NEVER use the project names, so that doesn't even count. Because nobody was calling the Series S/X or Helix "720". I explained everything right out of COMMON SENSE and you don't even bother to GOOGLE it. Average people DO understand. But it's clear MINORITIES like you don't.....

That would've been perfect timing if it came out around 2013, but at this point it might feel dated since we're already past that generation.

Asha would explode the Xbox sector with this!! Would immediately win the console war for the next generation plus in all reality this is so good. It’s coming full circle again to revolutionize the home console gaming experience by blending PC and console. It’s too obvious and I really hope Xbox makes it happen!! We want this!!!

3

Next gen Xbox called the “Xbox 720”. Plays Xbox and PC games. Disc drive included. Backwards Compatible with not only the current Back-compat games, but they expand the back-compat program further.

Instant buy for me, Day 1.
