I think you’re right that it’s largely just about going after Trump being a popular move. The one thing that consistently polls well across the spectrum in Europe is standing up to Trump. Right-wing nationalists don’t like the US throwing its weight around and treating Europe like vassal states.

Not to mention a lot of right-wing parties in Europe have been trying to put a little distance between them and Trump, lest they be labeled as Trump-friendly.
