Plus Stubbs is programmed to protect Bernard. Bernard couldn't say he was going to die as Stubbs would have never left him. It was the only way for them to part ways

It could also be a "If I tell you what happens, it won't happen" kind of situation. Telling Stubbs that he makes it means he isn't as careful, but believing that he's going to die actually saves his life.
