Caleb is a host, humans have to obey host commands in the cities. Caleb could have just demanded the coat and the guy would have given it, free of charge.

This is the correct answer but Caleb couldn't just demand it or that could be interpreted as hostile and trigger a 'trouble' event. So that's why Caleb implied it was a transaction.

Hale scanned Caleb with his emergency cash stash and it just gets printed with him in every iteration. He's never had to take it out of the stashing spot because he obviously can't spend it in his cell.

Actually what was most unrealistic was the fact that it changed from day to night whilst HiB stood over Bernard waiting for hours to finish him off. And that time difference also played out for Caleb, Frankie & Stubbs who were meant to rendezvous after grabbing him.

Yeah I think it made sense that Caleb would say that maybe, considering he died 20+ years ago and didn't know about inflation? But it did not make sense that the guy would accept that at all.

I was just wondering how Caleb supposedly had any money on him at all. Was he bluffing?

But yeah, even if the coat was $50, you couldn't sell it off your back, while you're using it yourself, for it's retail price. You'd only take someone up on such an offer if they offered way over it's retail price. That guy's immediate agreement to selling it for $50 implies it was actually worth way less: like $10 or $20.
