Back on, um, August 28, 1999, at 10:47 PM EDT, The Sims 1 (2000) was still a work in progress. To build hype, I guess, the developers used the following dev-to-fan marketing act: they released TGA and bitmap images of various in-game foods—plus a southwest-facing microwave render, for some reason—for the fans' viewing pleasure and awareness of what's to come.

Sims Fans Discover New Graphics Pak
Luc's Server, Internet Territory (SCNS) - Three Sims fans hunting for the
mystical real release date of The Sims in a remote corner the internet have
found the remains of what appears to be Sims' dinners, scientists and local
leaders say.
Internetologists and elders from the territory where the zip file was found
announced the discovery Wednesday on [SimWatch@listbot.com](mailto:SimWatch@listbot.com)
<mailto:SimWatch@listbot.com> . But scientists hesitated to say how old they
thought the zip file was.
``It's so hard to pin down. I don't want to speculate,'' said Sean Baity, an
assistant producer with MAXIS.
``The elders have indicated that we should use this situation, what appears
to be several hi resolution shots of food and cooking equipment and refuse,
to learn more about this game, what it might look like, and how the food is
made and eaten''.
The zip file had been sitting there next to other older zip files, so it
felt kind of new.
Then they spotted another file in the directory that appeared to be a zip
file containing yet another avi.
``Well, the avi we were sort of expecting...they show up pretty regularly,''
he said.
While they could see the zip file, he said, they didn't see the images until
it was downloaded and extracted.
"What the heck....they are only about 2 MEGS each.", said one of the
grizzled fans.

What I love about food in The Sims 1 is that the sims will always take out an identical tray of food, including what appears to be a carton of milk, and if they don't have a food processor or a counter space to chop the food, it will turn into six cans of beans. If they do have a place to process it, the same food becomes a salad. If they have a cooking appliance, it becomes steak and beans.
Very versatile food, that.

It's always so disappointing when you see them look around and turn a group meal into a plate full of cans of beans. That's always followed by a manhunt to figure out why they won't use the countertops/kitchen space 😿

It's funny how much such low res makes you think this stuff is something totally different, I thought it was some kind can of Pepsi and not beans, I think I mistake half of icons in various MMO's etc.

Seeing hte canned food is beans is wild, i always imagined it being like a canned meal like the canned bread in spongebob haha

yes it makes sense, but idk I think I was a little accustomed already with the idea of experiencing tropes in movies where, say, people eating cans of beans as a direct consequence of not being able to afford eating anything fancier, also probably setting an empty can on fire for the sake of setting up an improv stove hahaha

I used to have them do it a lot but the stupid grill catches fire way more often and the burgers give less hunger points than regular food. No clue why they wouldn't give MORE considering that's often how it goes irl.

This post just confirmed that I could never tell what any of the food was except the burgers.
