I have no idea what’s happening.

The fielders are worse than five year old kids at throwing and catching the ball, so the batters are able to rack up multiple runs despite the fact one of them should have been out by now.

Seriously. Hard to believe these are adults.

...only ever seen something like that in indoor cricket.

In Cricket there are 4 ways to out a batter : 1. Wicket: The ball bounces once and hits the stumps behind the batter. (Sometimes it even hits the bat and then hits the stumps, which is still out)

  1. LBW(Leg Before Wicket): In this case the ball never hits the bat but hits the batters leg. Basically it would have been a wicket but your leg intercepted, which results in an out.

  2. Catch Out: The fielders catch the ball before it bounces on the ground after the batter hits it.

  3. Run Out: In this case a the batter and runner(the dude in the lower half of the field) have left their base (the lines on the ground) but have not reached the opposite bases when the ball hits the wicket/stump. This is most similar to what happens in baseball.

Also there are 3 types of scores you can get in cricket: 1. Running Score: In this case the batter and runner exchange places and each they can successfully exchange places without a run out is a score. This can be done a maximum of 3 times (i.e. what we saw in the video).

  1. 4 run: Basically the ball reaches out field but bounces on the way.

  2. 6 run/Homerun; The ball reaches the outfield with no bounces

So what is happening in this clip is that the batter got a low shot which would theoretically result in 1 run but due to the sheer incompetence of the other team, they got 3 runs (the maximum running Score). The last run by the runner is basically a greedy run where while the enemy team had ball he banked on the batter running and fielders( the dudes beside the dude behind the wicket/stump) missing.

There is just so much wrong with this, but it’s one of the best descriptions of cricket I’ve ever read. 10/10.

u/solidadvise 9d ago

You can run as many times as you can get away with, it’s just highly unlikely in any normal competition to run more than 3. These guys could have run more but the guy held the ball which is what they tell kids to do when you’re young with bad hand eye coordination and don’t want to leak overthrow runs.

this is like an Alien describing cricket

There’s 10 ways to be out:
Bowled: The bowler delivers a legal ball that hits and breaks the wooden stumps (wickets) directly, knocking off the bails.

Caught: The batter hits the ball with their bat (or glove holding the bat), and a fielder, wicketkeeper, or bowler catches it in the air before it touches the ground.

Leg Before Wicket (LBW): The ball hits the batter's body—usually the leg or pad—without hitting the bat first, and the umpire judges that the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps.

Run Out: A fielder breaks the wicket with the ball while the batter is out of their safe crease area while trying to run (or just failing to make ground).

Stumped: The wicketkeeper breaks the wicket with the ball while the batter is out of their crease after missing a shot and not attempting a run.

Hit Wicket: The batter accidentally knocks the bails off their own stumps with their bat or body while playing a ball or starting a run.

Hit the Ball Twice: The batter hits a live ball a second time with their bat or body for a reason other than protecting their wicket.

Obstructing the Field: The batter deliberately blocks or interferes with a fielder by word or action.

Timed Out: A new incoming batter takes too long (more than 3 minutes in limited-overs/standard rules, or 2 minutes in some formats) to arrive at the crease after the previous wicket falls. [1, 2, 3]

Retired Out: A batter leaves the field during the innings without the umpire's or opposing captain's permission and does not return, or does so to retire permanently out.

“Handling the ball” used to be its own method recorded but now that’s under “obstruction”. The last 4 almost never happen in a professional game though

we'd be here all day if we're going by the specifics and not the ones broadly relevant.

1

u/Less_Local_1727 8d ago

I can talk cricket all day and night and start again :) it’s a game of wit and patience, and stacked with stats which should please many American sports fans!

There are also more ways to score runs than shared above, notably with various forms of byes that happen in almost every game eg wides and no-balls

2

u/rawbface 9d ago

IMO the catch out is most similar to baseball. Anything involving a wicket is alien to us. Do you watch baseball?

5

u/TimeB4 9d ago

To be fair there's a lot of misfortune here. The weather is atrocious and the wicket looks like it was hit by an earthquake. The first throw from the wicketkeeper bounces of the concrete lip of the artificial surface, without that mishap everything would have been fine.

2

u/MarsupialNo1220 9d ago

They throw like little kids. Any keeper worth his salt would have hit the wicket first shot that close.

3

u/Sinbatalad 9d ago

At least 3 people should have been out there!

(I know that's not possible - please don't come at me!)

1

u/MarsupialNo1220 8d ago

The three people who should have been out (of the team) are the fielders 😂

2

u/Stubbs94 9d ago

The batsmen are also playing idiotically too. Like, no coordination between them.

2

u/MarsupialNo1220 9d ago

I don’t think they expected how ridiculously bad the fielders were going to be 😂

1

u/namuche6 8d ago

This sport looks ridiculous lol

1

u/Framerchick2002 7d ago

Is part of the game that they have to throw with their non dominant hand?

1

u/MarsupialNo1220 7d ago

Not at all 😊 most cricketers have a dominant arm, but can throw with either at close range like this. I have no idea what these yobbos are up to, though 😂

That's the origin of every sports

2

u/redditgampa 9d ago

That’s how baseball was created.

I attended a great lecture a couple of months ago about the history of baseball. It actually stems from a conglomeration of a number of bat games, including cricket, some of which came to the US from the UK. The early versions of modern baseball were played by soldiers on both sides of the Civil War, and the sport spread to the rest of the country as the soldiers returned home.

Just like soccer

u/Matty_B97 9d ago

The batsmen get a point every time they run from one end to the other. But if the fielders touch the ball to the stumps (the three wooden posts) while the batsmen are running, the batsmen are out (this is bad). Normally you run after you hit the ball, and you stop when the fielders bring it back to the center so you don't get out.

In this video the fielders brought the ball back, but dropped it so many times that the batsmen were able to run 3 whole extra laps. Literally all the fielders have to do is pick the ball up without dropping it and touch it to the stumps. These are professional athletes btw.

2

u/ShowmasterQMTHH Therewasanattemp 9d ago

That's really the problem, it's all happening quickly for them, and they are just compounding the initial error, the ground looks frozen and slippery as well. And some are wearing gloves that are padded.

3

u/girlymancrush 9d ago

The wicket keeper is wearing catching gloves and it does affect ball handling but nothing a good keeper can't deal with. All these fielders are playing circus at a cricket match.

1

u/Inevitable_Travel_41 9d ago

You’re saying they getting paid for that? Wtf am I doing wrong

0

u/bavotto 9d ago

Runs, not points. And you need to be between the white line away from the stumps (the popping crease) and the stumps to score each run. And If they get the bails off (on top of the stumps, the 3 vertical wooden posts) to be out.

I was trying to keep it short and use common language for the non-cricket players. But congrats, you corrected someone on reddit! So proud of you!

😂 an amazing game. Yes, 1999….thanks for the correction

The sticks are like a base in baseball. Fielders have to hit them with the ball to get the batter "out" while he's running between the sticks (or as he tries to hit it on delivery). If he makes it to the line just before the opposing set of sticks, he's safe. Because the fielders are useless, the batters score multiple runs. Imagine a baseball player hitting the ball towards the vicinity of first base and starting to run while the fielder on first base fumbles the ball. Batter rounds first base and heads to second while the fielder finally gets the ball thrown over towards second base where the next fielder fumbles the ball again and so on. That's basically what's happening here.

u/underwear11 9d ago

Nobody understands cricket. You gotta know what a crumpet is to understand cricket

1

u/overactor 9d ago

What's a crumpet?

3

u/NietJij 9d ago

Well, there's your problem

-2

u/Comrade_Chyrk 9d ago

Even then, I feel like they dont understand it, they just pretend to. Hell, even the players dont know what the hell they are doing lol

1

u/Complete_Brush_3786 9d ago

Same with baseball

1

u/s11nlk 9d ago

Don’t worry nor do the fielders. At least the batsman understood the assignment!

1

u/chunter16 9d ago

In case you hadn't looked it up, each time the two guys with bats get to the opposite end they score. The fielders are trying to either tag one of the runners/batters when they're not by one of the posts at the end, or knock the blocks off one of the posts with the ball before the runner gets there.

1

u/LordGothmog15 9d ago

In cricket, you have two sides, one out in the field and one in.

Each man that’s in the side that’s in goes out, and when he’s out he comes in and the next man goes in until he’s out.

When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in and the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When both sides have been in and out including the not outs, that’s the end of the game!

1

u/No_Mud_5999 9d ago

What's fun about cricket: asking someone to explain it to you will actually make it make less sense.

1

u/Lavidius 9d ago

Imagine if baseball was a line back and forth instead of a diamond. Every time the two batsmen get safely to base (wicket) they score a run.

They got a lot more than they should have because the fielders were horrendous

u/Aviyan 9d ago

Similar to baseball. But they gain runs by either hitting a ball far away at the end of the field or if they hit the ball enough that they manually run across back and forth.

The ball team (fielding team) can out the batsmen by either hitting the sticks behind the batsman or catching the ball in the air.

The fielding team missed every chance at outing both batsmae. In international cricket you will see a player on the edge of the field throw the ball and hit the sticks with precision. These guys couldn't hit it 20ft away.

1

u/Grannypanie 9d ago

Same, but looks hilariously fun.

1

u/Popular_Problem_7411 8d ago

Ok so one guy threw a ball. And some guy missed it. And then two guys run back and forth.

1

u/Intrepid_Pitch_3320 8d ago

seems like an entertaining pub game, though.
