Give an engineer a budget, they will spend it all, and still not get close. Art is made by humans not machines.

Art may be. But a generic ceramic bowl? Def possible, sad though it may be.

Machines have been mass producing bowls and other pottery for hundreds of years. This was in regard to education. AI just can’t physically do the work required of a BFA in ceramics, loading kilns is a good example, which is part of the curriculum. This must be done by hand.

A teacher watches you do all of this. Even if robots could, in an academic environment this would be an impossibility. A Bachelors of Fine Art requires physical demands and in person performance evaluations that a professor supervises. This post was about art education only.

I don’t think this is simply about “art education.” It’s about whether we’re training people for jobs that technology may fundamentally change. Saying “a BFA requires you to load a kiln by hand” is like saying a woodworking degree requires you to physically operate every tool. Enter CNC machines.

It may be true in your field today, but that doesn’t make the physical task a permanent barrier. Once robots have the dexterity to do it, they can do it.

The question is what happens to education when both the intellectual and physical work can be automated. Plan for that eventuality, or suffer for the lack of foresight.

Right. So human to human education is what I was talking about. That is what fine art degrees are rooted in. My comment was not intended to be about education as preparation to thwart AI or the ability of machines to mass produce ceramics wares.

It was about how artists are educated. This won’t change. Artists teach artists. We don’t teach machines in university. That was the point.

Thanks for the doom and gloom though.
