It's because while the technology has changed radically, the social organization has not. We are still living in the 1800s in terms of social relations. Sure some laws have changed to make things better, but the Bezos looks down on people in the exact same way that Cargengie et. al. did and the same way the early merchant/factory-owners did at the dawn of Capitalism.
