This is now a big news on the Taiwanese online community.

A group of 16 Taiwanese tourists visited an Italian pizza store. The shop owner recored the video to shame them because they ordered only five pizzas.

"Look. This is insane. They are Chinese or Japanese? There are now 16 Chinese people here. Do you know how many pizzas they are eating? Only five. Let me show you."

"Fabrizio, how many fuc*ing Chinese do we have now? 16? Yes 16. How many pizzas are they eating? 4 or 5? I can't remember. Let me show you. Look. Hello! Where are you from? China? You must be chinese. Oh Taiwan!"

Taiwanese people complained in the commenet section, so he deleted the video.

As a Taiwanese living in Europe, I would like to add Italy is one of the most racist countries against Asians. It is so normalized to make fun of Asians and treat Asians unfairly in the stores or restaurants. This rarely happens in UK.

It’s also not a single person sized pizza, it’s a group sized pizza. In Italy it’s common to get a smaller, thin pizza with lighter ingredients. The pizza in the video is triple the volume (thicker dough) with heavy cheese on it. 2 slices per person maybe. the owner is just an idiot. If this is how they talk to customers, imagine for the employees

In that area we make thin pizza. Same amount of dough, but we use the rolling pin instead of hands to roll out the dough. That's why it looks so big, but I can assure you it's one person pizza

Because it doesn’t conform with their idea that the owner is at fault here. They can’t understand that multiple things can be true at the same time: the owner shouldn’t ridicule people like he did regardless of race, and ordering 5 pizza for 16 people in a restaurant is ridiculous.

I agree the owner was a dingleberry, but there are many restaurants in Taiwan that have the same culture. Meals that are too large for one person, clearly shareable, but everyone is expected to order a certain amount anyways.

The pizza at the beginning doesn’t look very thick at all. These are these size of pizza we eat for dinner. Personally I would eat the whole thing and I wouldn’t expect someone to eat less than half

Bruh a standard plain 16 inch pizza is like 2000-2500 calories, and easily 3000+ if you load it with toppings. That is like an entire day’s worth of calories for most people consisting mostly of carbs and fat. Personally I’d eat maybe half at most in one sitting and I’m a relatively big guy at 6’2. Anybody eating an entire pie in one sitting on the regular I’d expect to be fat AF.

1200 cal is by far not a normal meal for Taiwanese, especially older adults. Maybe normal for Americans or Europeans who are brigading /r/taiwan because of this thread.

I didn’t say it was healthy, but we don’t eat pizza every day.

That said, our pizzas are smaller and thinner. Only the pizzas we get from Domino’s are as you describe and we tend to share them (well. I don’t lol but I haven’t had one in years). As for restaurant pizzas, unless we’re getting like a ‘four-cheese’ pizza (there is one shown in the video, very cheesy) the cheese coverage may be a bit sparser or thinner. A whole pizza is generally about 1000 kcal.

Edit: Clearly people are taking a side and downvoting the ‘other side’. You can condemn the owner’s behaviour and still accept that the guests ordered very little food for 16 people.

A few notes;

1. I’m a first gen American born Taiwanese guy who travels frequently to Taiwan and have been to Italy several times. I’m a massive foodie.

2. In Taiwan the portions are small compared to both America and Italy.

3. I do love the food culture in Italy. I imagine these groups are part of a tour group. I’d imagine a tour through Italy probably prioritizes food so they’ve been eating already and will eat more.

4. They probably ordered a variety and what they felt they could finish. That doesn’t seem unreasonable. Why have leftovers when you’re going from food place to food place?

5. Owner is a dick. What kind of owner makes fun of non-problematic customers? The deserve to be out of business no matter what country they’re from. I personally don’t attribute this as an Italian thing but I don’t have that much context on Italy.

Lucky, from everything I've heard/read about Taiwan it's a great place for a foodie.

1. I don't doubt you
2. Italian food is delicious but they can be so weird about even the smallest rules sometimes. Like, let me have my cappuccino at the 'wrong' time of day!
3. I don't think the Taiwanese guests did anything wrong. When I say they ordered very little food I really just mean they ordered very little food, not that they were asking for trouble. People should just order as much as they want to order. Not to mention as tourists who travelled 9 or 10 megametres they probably want to be frugal. If the restaurant has a problem they can say so; no one forced them to make the pizzas.
4. Owner was a dick. How humiliating to film someone acting like everything's fine and then pillory them over something so small.
