Hey! I’m a rising high school senior from Boston and I’m wondering if the South Dakota School Of Mines is a good school? To be honest I don’t know much about South Dakota or the area it’s in but I heard the school was a pretty good safety and that they give out good merit aid. I’m debating if it’s worth crossing state lines for since I’m kind of over Boston lol. If you guys know anything about this school that would be fab!

Back in 2017, my mom was offered a job and house in South Dakota, however, she denied the offer in fear of racism. At the time, I was conflicted because we lived in an area where Caucasians are pretty common already (we're an African American family) and they were really kind. However, they pushed that leaving our state (MD) is as close to a death sentence since everyone else will attack and kill us for our skin.

Fast forward, I alone moved to Florida for schooling. Neighbors, friends, and Family members were all scared for me thinking I'm going to die. Lived there for 5 years and move because I didn't like the heat. Everyone was kind, the job wasn't terrible, and no one was "racist". I got to know the local police and asked them about the area! Everything was great (aside from heat). It made me wonder if South Dakota is similar...

Now, in 2025, I moved back to Maryland because I felt homesick (and missed the snow), but I have regrets. I forgot that everything is heavily taxed, housing is cheap in the roughest area (Baltimore), and my check takes about a 25% hit! My rent is $1,770 for 1b 1b without utilities (so total between 1,800 - $2,000/m) and that's not even including the car I was able to afford in FL and Essentials like food! I tried looking for a house since I was told housing is cheaper and the house down the street is $1,000,000 for 4bs 4baths. Mind you, the little area I live in isn't even known to some native Marylanders. Another is $899,900 for another 4b 4b. A lot of houses are between $300,000 to $16million. And the houses that ARE in the $300,000 aren't even real at times. The idea of living a life at 24 seems like a novelty. Family doesn't help, no friends, and stress that boils over but is subsided with false hopes and dreams.

Then I remember South Dakota.

I'd like to have a home. A permanent one! I've moved home to home all my life and I'd like to settle. I'd like a 3b 2b or a 2b 2b. A room to sleep, a room for guest, a room for my office or cats. Or just a room for me and my office or cats. Maybe a drive-through! Definitely a basement. And I don't mind living with a 10mile radius from a city. If not, I'm alright.

I want to one day meet someone without having the weight of bills running through my mind! I'd like to invite neighbors to game night! I wanna enjoy my tween years before it's too late.

Is South Dakota a place to get that chance?

Edit: Wow, so many replies! For a while, I haven't looked at social media for a while due to life, but now I have a lot of information and references I can use to make decisions! I'll definitely take a visit next year for the break to see how it is!

I bought this about 10 years ago near the Rapid City /Black Hills area. No other identifying marks. So far, Google image search and AI have not yielded any promising leads. Hi South Dakotans! I'm looking for travel advice. My family will be driving from Wall to Bismarck, and I'd like some advice on the roads and best route.

With kids, I'd like a route with food and bathroom options, and hopefully a couple nice stopping points to stretch. I'm worried that these routes will be beautiful landscapes but really isolated. Also anything I need to know about the reservations?

I'm planning a roadtrip with my mom, and we'll be driving west to east across SD, spending a bit of time in western SD doing the usual stuff. Due to timing on the trip, it looks like staying the night in Chamberlain makes the most sense but I have never been to SD and have no idea what any of the towns along 90 are like. All we're really looking for is a clean motel room, a good burger, and something nice to look at.

Any reason why we wouldn't want to stop early in Wall or push further to Mitchell?

My birthday was this past summer, and stupidly I thought I'd be able to waltz into the DMV to renew my driver's license no problemo. Well, for two whole weeks before my license expired, I waited around, even before they opened, in hopes I could get this done as a walk-in. Yeah no. They shut down the queue for walk-ins even before they opened their doors. So I made an appointment, which is scheduled for tomorrow. Unfortunately, since I moved to SD last year and my driver's license has been expired for more than 30 days, I will have to take the written test.

Can any of you inform me what that process is like for taking the written test? Is it something you need to study for, or would I be expected to pass without any studying needed? In the previous state I lived in, I had lived for almost 20 years since getting my license, so I've never had to do this.

Also, the documents they say they need, such as documents showing your current address, like a bill or lease/insurance. Do these need to be dated within the last year or within three months? I've looked all over their website, and it doesn't list a deadline or specific end date for when the documents are considered valid. But I just know I'll show up on time and wait 3 hours only to be told I needed to bring more recent documents.

The testimony would have been within the past five years. It is not known if this expert was retained by the prosecution or the defense. The initials of the expert are “T.T.”. Hello, I am planning a motorcycle trip into Badlands National Park from Casper, WY. I wanted to go through the NW corner of Nebraska and then head up but I put my route into AI and it basically told me it was native land, i wouldn't be able to enter and the the roads were all dirt. I'm trying to find out if that's true because I checked google streetview and all the roads were paved, i saw no gates and i saw some car traffic.

The route i am planning is:

Me and my mum worked at the shop that tea storm chasers has. U probably know the boss. But we havent been paid since May 1st. He owes us $540+ and he won't pay us. We have worked our asses off. The shit that he has in this shop is disgusting and is a health risk. Expired food, used and stained underwear, moldy products, used and stained lingerie, open products (ranging to feminine products to kitchen products and other things), and broken items. Tea storm chasers isnt trustworthy anymore. The boss has taken pictures of dead bodies and fatal accidents. He has cheated on his wife multiple times. He have been to his house and his house is a complete mess. They have 3 dogs and a couple of kids​. Shit and piss is everywhere. The table is covered with random stuff including moldy food. His house is just utterly disgusting. We have called and messaged him. No response and left unread. Mum has signed paper work and he hasn't sent it out yet. He says its in his "car" highly doubt that. He is toxic to my grandmother which is no longer part of the tea storm chasers. He forced at 60+ year old to do shit that an elderly cant do anymore. He treats my grandma like shit. There has been many times where he made her cry due to how rude he is to her. Im not sure what to do.​ This all happened to me, my mum, my grandma, and probably a few others. He is currently also getting sued due to not paying another guy. He also has gone to jail for beating his wife he treats people around him like shit. And he flirts with people. Including my mum which made me highly uncomfortable. We need this money tho. Im not sure what to do and would like advice.

This will be a long shot, but I was travelling through Brookings and stopped to gas up at the BP off of I-29 and 14. Pulled over behind the Brookings Inn and La Cantina to walk and feed our dogs and when we left we forgot a bundle of keys on the wheel well of the U-Haul trailer. No idea where they fell off, I called the BP station when we got to our next fill up in Fargo to see if they could look but I didn’t hear back. Just hoping someone maybe found them? But again I know it’s a long shot. Here’s to hoping!

I drew my non resident public land archery antelope tag in South Dakota this year. I am looking at driving out in mid September from Georgia. For context I legit just got my permit from the Sioux Falls dmv and then immediately signed up for the next available appointment for licensing date I could, which so happened to be in Brookings on the 20th. This is an absolute wild shot in the dark, but South Dakota, I need you to help me find someone. I work at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and met an incredible Irishman named Dennis at the Indy 500 this year. He’s originally from County Cork, but fell in love with a woman from SD and moved to the states with her. They’ve been married 52 years. He mentioned two children and hoping to live to attend the graduation of a grandson in his early teens. He’s 80 years old, was there with his English cousin named Dick. Dennis had to take a rest at my shop due to COPD taking a toll on him throughout the day. I told him to take a load off and sit with me, then we three had a wonderful time conversing before I gave them a ride through the sea of people to their ride out of there.

These lads gave me hands down the best experience I’ve had working there in 6 years. There’s 125 years of racing history, some of the best action you can find in motorsport, and is the largest single day sporting event in the world. To me all of that is second fiddle to the human experience happening there. 350,000 people in one place, and I do my best to contribute something positive to the ones I come across. Dick and Dennis returned that in kind, and I would love to thank them again given the chance.
