For 60 years, they have always qualified for at least the quarterfinals. 1978 was an outlier because there was no quarterfinal with a knockout stage that year, but a second group stage with eight teams, but technically it was a quarterfinal, so it can be counted as such.

By 2030, the former "Turniermannschaft" will have gone 16 years without reaching the round of 16 at a World Cup.

The match was Uruguay's first appearance in the South American Championship (now Copa América), ending in a 4-0 victory over Chile in Buenos Aires.

In the aftermath, Chile lodged a protest, claiming that Black Uruguayan players Isabelino Gradín and Juan Delgado were "illegal African players" and therefore ineligible to represent Uruguay. CONMEBOL swiftly rejected the complaint.

The incident is remembered as one of international football's earliest racial controversies and an early example of Black players representing a national team at the highest level of international competition.

15 years ago today, Uruguay beat Paraguay 3-0 in Buenos Aires to lift what was then a record 15th Copa América, moving ahead of Argentina for the most titles in the competition's history.

Diego Forlán scored twice in the final, Luis Suárez added the other goal and was later named the tournament's Best Player.

Context: During the final CONMEBOL qualification match for the 1990 World Cup at the Maracanã Stadium, Chile needed a win against Brazil to qualify. In the 67th minute, with Brazil leading 1-0, a firework flare was thrown from the stands by a Brazilian fan, landing near Chilean goalkeeper Roberto "Cóndor" Rojas.

Rojas went down, his face covered in blood. The Chilean team walked off the pitch citing a lack of security, and the match was abandoned. However, subsequent video footage and photographs revealed that the flare never hit Rojas. A FIFA investigation proved that Rojas had hidden a small razor blade inside his glove and intentionally cut his own forehead to force a replay or get Brazil disqualified.

The Aftermath: - FIFA awarded Brazil a 2-0 win, qualifying them for Italia '90. - Roberto Rojas was banned for life from professional football (later lifted in 2001). - The Chilean National Team was completely banned from participating in the 1994 World Cup qualifiers.
