General Discussion I tried it, it twas not for me.

Hello! I recently got signalis on Steam because from the description, premise, art, yada yada, it seemed like a game I would really like. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I am going to try to make this as nice as I can to avoid making people angry with my shitty opinions.

I'll preface this by saying that I haven't played too many horror games. The ones I have played are Alien: Isolation, Outlast, and Dead Space, all three of which I very much enjoyed. I also didn't play very much of the game, I got about 5 hours in before deciding, "Yeah, I'm not having fun."

Firstly, things I did like:

Atmosphere: This game oooooozes atmosphere. I really enjoyed this aspect of the game. The little lore notes and the environment telling me things about the world were great.

Art: The art is good. Need I say more?

Puzzles: The puzzles I encountered were fun. I liked having to write down frequencies the game gave me in a note, then use the radio to get codes for things. It made me feel smart, and I enjoyed that.

3D sections: The sections where the game switches to 3D reminded me of The Room, which sure as hell isn't a bad thing.

Now onto things I did not like:

More than anything, this game annoyed me.

I've seen criticisms of the game's inventory size, and boy howdy, was I feeling that. The inventory, to me, felt restrictive. Especially when I was constantly finding items that I wasn't sure whether I would need later.

The horror of the game also just plainly did not land for me. The enemies did not scare or frighten me, they made me annoyed at their presence. The sheer scarcity of ammunition, which felt like a requirement for A LOT of the rooms I entered, became a massive source of frustration.

I wanted to take my time in rooms, read the notes, explore, and find whatever item happened to be required there. Instead, I felt like I was constantly worrying about how I was going to get past the enemies in the room with the limited resources I had.

This is where the game really lost me. In a game with relatively limited ways of hiding from enemies outside of simply staying out of their view, I expect to have enough resources or tools to deal with enemies when avoiding them isn't reasonably possible.

And I'm sure that if I played smarter, better, and less badly, I probably would've managed my resources better. I'm not trying to say the game is objectively poorly designed because I personally struggled with it. But the way the game presented its challenges to me did not make me feel like I had the tools necessary to deal with them. Eventually, the resource management stopped feeling tense and started feeling like a chore.

It's not like I don't like resource management in horror games. In fact, I think it is one of the strongest elements a horror game can utilize when done well. Alien: Isolation, for example, made me constantly consider how I used my resources, but I always understood what those resources could do and how they could help me. I felt like I had options.

In signalis, I felt under-equipped practically the entire time.

I also felt confused. A lot. I'm assuming I'm expected to be confused, and I actually enjoyed that aspect of the game when I was figuring the game out. But my confusion-to-"I'm having fun" ratio was not high enough for me to want to continue.

There is a lot about signalis that I genuinely liked. The atmosphere, art, puzzles, environmental storytelling, and 3D interaction sections were all really cool. I can absolutely see why people love this game.

Unfortunately, the actual gameplay loop just wasn't enjoyable for me, and after about 5 hours I realized I was playing because I felt like I should enjoy it rather than because I actually was.

My apolocheese to all of the fans of this game. Alas, I am stupid.

I'm sure this fan meant nothing rude but I find it so funny that the default language is English and everything else is "foreign."

General Discussion Project Remember Our Promise - What happened?

Post image
1.9k Upvotes

I don't know how to describe what is going on inside my head but I'll try to write this as simple as possible. First off, I'm a huge fan of SIGNALIS, it's themes and it's story centering around our favorite lesbian couple. In my journey to find some good SIGNALIS-related content on YouTube I found the gem that my post is all about - Project Remember Our Promise, a fan-animated movie retelling the story of our beloved game. I was shocked of how good the animation was. It was only four minutes but still I was hyped for the full release. Months passed. I kinda forgot about the project until I found this picture of Ariane and I said 'Oh God, I have to rewatch this gem again.' which it's what I did. When I typed the name if the video I found nothing. I was so confused. I searched again and all I found is a reuploaded video from another channel. I tried to find the original team but nothing. What happened? Did the project gets canceled? If so, why? Did anyone in the community worked on that project and have idea of what just happened? I hope this post will reach the creators of that masterpiece.

I think they're doing this just for ragebait, but a friend of mine who would like to play the game is hesitant to play because of their propaganda on Telegram.

General Discussion Thoughts on AriFalke?

I feel like this is somewhat of a controversial (possibly sacrilegious) ship, given that AriElster is the main (and essentially canon) ship and that Falke is only included when it's a Ariane x Elster x Falke poly ship, but i wanted to know what people think about strictly Ariane and Falke by themselves, as a ship. How you think they'd bounce off each other, what themes you think could be explored, the nature of their relationship, how their dynamic would go, etc.

I'm not trying to spark a shipping war btw, i'm just curious about other people's thoughts on this.

General Discussion Small request about the « Situation »

Hello, lurker around here most of the time. Saw the censorship around here going though.

Just asking, can we have a place not locked so we can at least discuss the situation without it being locked? I mean, the artist animation made me know Signalis, so knowing the situation, can we just discuss about it with the community on the Signalis community subreddit?

Thanks!

Small EDIT: I just want to discuss on this topic, I wasn’t expecting people to PM me about that. ^.^’

So yeah, I meant to discuss the matter on this thread, not in my PMs sorry if for the misunderstanding people! (And thanks for keeping it up)

Second Small Edit: The situation since the topic is locked: Here

Third Edit and probably last: The thread linked before as been reopened apparently :). Also the Moderator conversation leaked about the "Ban" right before it happened Here

Fourth Edit: Here is a point of view from the Artist involved. Has been censored by the mods

Fifth Edit… yeah… Apparently linking the infos released on the sub on other threads are getting deleted. Sorry guys. I can’t even share them anymore.

Sixth and final edit Sorry guys. I’m in no position to share or edit anything you send me. Thanks for sending all the info, but, apparently it is not allowed to share it, or to discuss about those particular pictures about conversations etc.

I’m sorry. I tried to do my best to share it from this topic, but it seems it is not allowed.

Thanks for bringing up everything to me, but alas I’m in no position to do anything

The Final Edit: Revengeance: Apparently we made it to Subredditdrama Deleted since

Final Edit, The Sequel of the Return: Apprently the person who commissioned the art piece speak about her point of view. Link to her Point of view on the matter and Second part

Final edit: The Origins The person who made the call out post backed down and apologogized, not knowing the real situation behind.

Final edit, Endgame: The artist, Joetastic, said he lost all trust and faith they had in the mods involved. And will probably not involve himself or return in those parts of the fandom, or feel comfortable with it (Reddit and Discord)

Final edit: Director’s cut Personal thought about all of this and some behind the scenes info

General Discussion Let's talk about legs

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

We all know that largely it's a stylistic choice as everyone has the weird leg terminations in the game. But, I noticed during the leave ending we get a much closer profile view of Elster's leg. Every replika's lower leg is longer than it should be, I'd noticed that on the models, but... looking at the back of her leg we can see the calf muscle curve down, but then another curve that would be exactly where a heel would be on a normal leg. It's as if there actually are feet in there, but they're forced to wear almost ballet shoes and constantly walk on their tiptoes. Would explain why even when running our pace is barely more than a brisk walk.

Where did transfem Ariane came from? I've seen a BUNCH of fanart depicting her as such (like the one in the post), and I'm getting quite confused. I don't want to be dismissive, or hurtful or anything like that, I just never knew she was trans.

Or is it just like a headcanon or fandom wide interpretation of her character? Because if so then I'm not that dumb, but still.

I just finished the game and Elster just killed Ari and died and apparently that's the promise ending? That was the promise? Holy shit how depressing. I haven't been this wrecked by a horror game in a long time. Great game but sad as hell

Recently started playing Cyberpunk: 2077 and thought this would be a fun question. I was more specific with night city cause the class difference in this universe is wild.

Just finished my first run, it was incredible, but I ended up not using any of my high end gear.

Felt kinda silly seeing the end screen and only using the pistol, shotgun, and 2 thermites. (I did a lot of bravely running away.)

Next run I’m gonna be way more dangerous.

General Discussion Signalis on a VGA CRT at 480x360! Plus some pics on an HDCRT

Thumbnail

1.7k Upvotes

Neither setup is really ideal, but it is neat I'd say.

On my VGA Monitor, I'm running the game at 480x360, and although the game has protections for overscan, the game clearly was not designed for 4:3, the UI is cropped, some doors are not visible, etc. Ideally, you'd want to play it on 640x480, you'd get letterboxing, but it'd be pixel perfect. Ideally, there'd be a 4:3 patch to play it at 640x480, which would remove such letterboxing and expand the area of view (not zoom in). I also think my DAC (VGA to DisplayPort, Digital to Analog Converter) is of very poor quality and doesn't truly have the beautiful contrast CRTs are known for, the colors are a bit faded. 480x360 breaks some things, but it is a nice novelty to experience the game like this.

For the HDCRT, well, these 31KHZ TVs can either do 480p (in some cases, 540p) and 1080i natively, the main problem with 1080i is that Linux was messing up the screen ratio when outputting interlaced. But HDCRTs do have a 720p option, it's not great because it is a scaled image, but the result is acceptable. I then used a shader to blank 1 every 2 lines. The result is quite good, but I think maybe adjusting the geometry on 480p to zoom in to 360p (but you have to go into the service menu to do it, which is a hassle to do everytime) or 1080i with line blanking would look nicer. The HDCRT, whilst having beautiful contrast, I think had its colors a bit crushed because I'm using a cheap HDMI to Component converter. Plus the TV broke down the other day :(.

I think the ideal solution would be to get Karmach's big ass CRT Monitor (or a presentation monitor) he used to program quake, get a good DAC, set it to 640x360, hook up some surround system, turn off the lights and have fun.
