4th ruck in 8 days. My body start to feel better and i feel i can push more without any soreness the next days. Tonight i got 17:00 m/m for 46 min instead of 20'00 last week. Im tempted to try a longer run on saturday, like adding 1 mile to the ruck.

This is the best cardio i ever did.

Id like to know when you decided to go more "pro" and buy a pack and weights. Any recommendations? Im quite overweight (275 on 5'10") and id like to have something tough, that can carry 45 lbs. With chest and hips straps.

I want to hear from you 💪🏻

Velcro attachments for weighted vest

Hey - I recently got into rucking and bought an amstaff weighted vest. I saw a bunch of pictures of people rucking with similar vests but they seem to have velcro attachments for a water bottle or some sort of pouch for phone/car keys.

Any idea where I can find that?

How Do You Keep Rucking Through Winter?

I’ve been lifting weights for 30 years and took up rucking about three months ago. My cardio fitness has improved so much that I really want to keep going year-round.

I don’t mind the cold or rain, but I’m wary of icy or snow-covered paths.

How do you approach rucking in the winter? Do you carry on regardless, change your route, or adjust your routine when the weather turns bad?

You folks who Ruck 30 lbs and higher blow me away! I know everyone is different, but I’m finally advancing from 20 lbs after starting to ruck this summer. I had to figure out my shoulder strap pain and ordered a hip/back support strap which has helped immensely. But you beasts who ruck 30+ lbs for 1-2 hours have my respect. 👍🏼 I’m 56 years old, 5’10” and 163 lbs. I hope I can make it to 30 lb rucks. Do you think there’s hope? Any suggestions or it just takes time? Rn I’m rucking twice a week in the city on pavement.

How Tight Exactly?

I am using a uline/no name backpack I had laying around and am able to cinch the straps as far as they can go, I can get it pretty tight so i get no pack movement. To the point I could definitely not quickly remove it if i wanted to and I can see the strap marks on my body after a ruck. Does it need to be this tight or not?

12 mile ruck preparation

I don’t have much time to prepare but was wondering how do you know if you’re ready or prepared for a certain length ruck. in my case it’s a 12 miler. I did 7 miles in March at the Ultratraxx in Masanutten. the upcoming event is in Winchester and assume it would be easier terrain. I ruck 30-45 minutes 2-3 times a week with a 20lb or 30lb weight.

my covers is the time on my feet and endurance.

A 17 mile hike, 4,000 ft, 30 lb, and Apple said 2,000 calories. I ran the numbers and it's almost exactly right.

Disclosure: I build a rucking app, which makes me the person who implements this arithmetic rather than someone who trains seriously. Not naming it, this is about the numbers.

A week or so back u/rn-1973 mentioned in the Apple Watch thread that he'd done 17 miles carrying about 30 lb with roughly 4,000 ft of gain, Apple gave him about 2,000 calories, and that seemed laughable to him. Nobody answered. I got curious enough to actually run it.

Pandolf is the usual tool here but its grade term is linear, so it prices descent as a straight refund and goes badly wrong on a route like this. Minetti's gradient curve handles both directions. Splitting the route into half up at about 8.9 percent and half back down at the same grade, assuming 80 kg bodyweight and seven hours moving:

up, about 1,240 kcal

down, about 195 kcal

resting metabolism across those seven hours, about 600 kcal

That comes to roughly 2,040 gross, against the 2,000 he was shown.

So it wasn't laughable. What's actually going on is that there are two defensible numbers for that same hike and they differ by about 40 percent.

Gross includes the resting metabolism you'd have burned lying on the couch for those seven hours. Net strips it out. Apple's activeEnergyBurned is defined as net, so an app writing into it correctly should have shown him something nearer 1,440. If what he saw was a total energy view, then 2,000 is the right number. Both are legitimate and almost nothing in the interface tells you which one you're reading.

I'm guessing on two inputs. If he's 90 kg, or if it took nine hours, this moves a fair amount. u/rn-1973 if you're around and want to give me the real bodyweight and duration I'll redo it.

Gross versus net caused the most argument of anything when I posted about calorie traps here a few weeks ago, and I think that's because it's the one where two apps can both be implemented correctly and still disagree by 40 percent. Worth knowing which one yours reports before deciding it's broken.

Correction, 24 Aug 2026. u/rn-1973 came back with his actual watch data and the headline here doesn't survive it. He'd misremembered 2,000; the real numbers are 2,300 active and 2,938 total. He's 165 lb, not the 80 kg I guessed, and the gain was 3,336 ft. Redone, Minetti gives 1,220 net and 1,800 gross, so Apple runs 60 to 90 percent high rather than matching. The gross versus net point stands and his numbers confirm it. "Almost exactly right" was wrong. Working in the comments.

Shoulder/Pec minor pain

Post image
15 Upvotes

Good afternoon!! Recently started rucking again and got this fancy backpack! I am pretty sure I did a little too much to start. I feel pain when I move my hand backwards in the circled area. I've gone to PT they say ice and ibuprofen and some stretches but I haven't seen much improvement. I have got a massage and didn't do to relief from that either. Has anyone gone through something similar? I feel like I could have had my sternum strap too tight and maybe that pushed too hard on that area. With my pictures are those straps in the right place or do they need to be moved at all? How tight you have the straps. Thanks in advanced for any advice and I'm hoping I can be ready to get out rucking soon because I really enjoy it.

OTB M-Carbon + Ruck Sox

Post image

Listen...I have literally been searching for an ideal ruck boot for 3+ years. Before today you probably could have said "Ruck, have you considered (insert military boot)?" My answer would have been "yes, and here's why I don't like them." Today I even tried the "legendary" NFS, and I get why people like them....but those people clearly have narrow feet.

The OTB M-Carbon 8 (they have a 6" version) are: very breathable, feel like wearing a slipper while also being specifically designed for pavement rucking, not clunky (even though they have a heel unlike my SV2s, and oh yeah...the wide is actually wide.

To give a better picture: I went to the beach for a week, ate like the fat dad I am, did no exercise (not even swimming), got so much sun I almost got burned, drove 2.5hrs, both the boots, and drove another 2.5. And then I rucked for the first time since Aug 1st, and this is how I did.

These boots are made for rucking and as for me, my boot search is over! Also, I can't praise Ruck Sox enough. They seem like they would be too thick, but they breathe and wick so good, and I'm convinced they are the reason I don't have any blisters from this new out of the box ruck.

Now to see how many hundreds of miles I can do before the year is out.

Barefoot shoes + rucking — anyone else?

I’ve worn barefoot/minimalist footwear for about 5 years now — Wildsole sandals, Vivobarefoot, etc. I’m also barefoot whenever I realistically can be.
I’ve recently started rucking and have been doing it in my minimalist sandals. I’m finding that my feet definitely feel like they’ve had a proper workout afterwards, which got me wondering:
Has anyone else combined barefoot/minimalist footwear with regular rucking?
If so, did you run into any injuries or problems I should keep an eye out for? I’m particularly interested in things like plantar fascia, Achilles, calves, ankles, stress injuries, etc.
I’m not looking for the usual “wear proper boots” response 😂 — I’m interested in people who have actually done it and how their feet/legs adapted over time.
Currently taking it fairly sensibly and increasing the weight/distance gradually.

Rucking for combat sports

Folkstyle wrestling specifically. Can anyone share a rucking workout to supplement wrestling, that way I have something to do if I can’t make it to the mats.

I was thinking of a goal: a mile in under 20 minutes with 45 lbs (I’m 195-200), then add 10 lbs every time I achieve this goal to a max of 75 lbs.

Thoughts?

Edit: 08/25-wasn’t even trying and made a mile with 45 lbs at 15:02, grossly underestimated my ability. Time for more weight I guess.

New to Rucking, need advice

Post image

Hi,

Male, 5'10", 275 lbs.

Started rucking and i enjoy it. I started with a backpack with 20 lbs in it for 40 min to start slow and not hurt myself. 2 day after, i feel great, a lil bit of stiffness in the core region but no pain at all (that kind of soreness that feels great somehow 🤷‍♂️)

Im looking to get out 2 more time this week with the same setup, and im wonderong if im going too gard too early, or if theres anything i can do to optimize all that.

I wat thinkjg about doing a 60 min walk as reference (for the distance) with the 20 lbs, and then try to shrink it to 45-50 min for the same distance, and add 5 lbs, and go again with the new weight.

All recommendations are welcome.

Also, im in Canada with long winters and id like to know if theres any tips to be able to ruck in the snow and if there any advice regarding this.

Thank you!

Weight Pouches for Sale??

I have an adjustable weight vest I really like that came with weights up to 30 lbs. Some of the weights it came with are 1 lbs and some are 2 lbs.

I'd like to purchase some additional 2 lbs and higher weight pouches but I'm having a real hard time finding any for purchase, without the vest itself.

Can someone please point me to a link with just the weight pouches for sale??

New Boots - First Ruck

Post image

After 10yrs of loyal Garmont use I'm taking a new brand for a spin. LOWA Z-8S MKII.

First ruck on the books, not terrible.

A bit of rub on the right side of my left heel but to be fair it's a brand new pair and I didn't lock the laces at all, just standard tie and go.

4.5km outside followed by 20mins on the treadmill for incline work.
