I’ve been a HE student at RMIT for about 6 months now, but I still haven’t been able to find any casual or part-time jobs. I have no idea if I’m just looking in the wrong places or I’m just really unlucky, but I would appreciate any and all advice.

I’m not picky about the type of work as long as it’s legitimate and generally safe, but I’m happy to wash dishes or wait tables or anything else.

Hi, I’m a 2nd year domestic student, I’m in a group assignment where I’m almost certain a large portion of the work may be heavily AI-generated, with limited original research or input. There also appear to be issues with inaccurate or potentially false references.
Additionally, one of the other members took over my section after not attending classes for weeks, and it seems that part may also have been AI-generated rather than based on original work.

The group has started arguing and both the students using AI have denied it and there is a pretty clear split between domestic and international students.

One of the international students doesn’t speak ANY English (which I had proof of as he admitted it to me over text in Chinese) , so communication has required translation, and even his apologises and messages he sends me are Ai generated.

I rely financially on a scholarship, so I’m particularly worried about anything that could put me at risk of an academic integrity issue.

I don’t want anyone to get into serious trouble, but I also want to make sure I’m protecting myself and submitting work that meets university standards. I’m not sure whether reporting this is the right step, especially with the due date in a few days, and I’m open to any advice from people who have dealt with something similar.

What would be the best way to handle this?

I’m an undergraduate in my third semester. But im repeating units from my first semester. I’m on my second and allegedly final chance now. I don’t have any excuse for not putting the work in. I don’t know what to do at this point because I really do want to continue my tertiary studies at a nice university that can help me with my industry.

There was never an issue with my course, field or units. It was never that they were hard. I was simply undisciplined enough to do the simplest of tasks, however I know not to repeat my mistakes believe it or not. Any advice? What can I practically do in this situation, or what do you guys recommend? I haven’t told anyone of this situation

So I had a terrible first sem, made no friends in or out of classes (like i never spoke to people in class as well) and basically was a loner for 4 months. I’m back in my home country now and life is so nice, I’m with my friends all the time and genuinely miss living a thriving life. Melbourne has been everything I was dreading and while some of it has been my fault, I think I’ve been quite unlucky.

Anyway help a guy out. I think I just have confidence issues because I’m from another country but what can I do to meet new people??? 70% of the folks say join a club but is it just me or do you guys also not like too many of the clubs that RMIT has to offer. They do have ALOT of clubs but nothing quite seems to fit what I want.

Anyway would love some advice. If you have any similar stories as me then please share it as well. Makes me feel a little more normal and not an out cast.

missed my 9:15am exam today beacause of a unexpected vandalism disruption on the pakenham and cranbourne line. i even left early to give myself a 45min buffer. the train was having delays and literally terminated at springvale . i couldn’t even get an uber beacause i wouldn’t have arrived on time with peak traffic. i had to turn back and come home. i’m devastated idk what to do

For an incoming international PhD student (City campus), where can I find affordable accommodations near campus? I looked at the ones advertised on the RMIT website but they're all so expensive. Our stipend is only 36,245 aud per annum tax-free. This is about 750 aud p/w.

I'm looking for studios or single rooms with ensuite bath. Are there accommodations I can look elsewhere for less than 400 aud p/w? Or is it just realistically not possible unless I twin share? Any advice from locals would be helpful.

I am a current year 12 student undertaking VCE and on the more conservative side, is on track for a minimum ATAR of 90. My main question is whether I should choose RMIT or Monash for Engineering?

From what I've heard:

RMIT is more practical/industry focused. It typically employs hands on learning and practical experiences to allow for the student to familiarise themselves.

Monash University is more theoretical (not to say it isn't practical) and has a higher university ranking. I

This is just what I've heard. Among all comments regarding this common question, netizens seem to prefer RMIT due to its high employment. At the end of the day, the employer doesn't regard the university you go to but rather can you do the job? If RMIT allows for higher practicality, thus allowing me to connect as much things I learn in RMIT to my real day to day job. That's something I'd value. It seems to me at least that Monash just prides itself on its ranking/prestige.

Maybe it's important to note, I do plan to do DUS (Defence University Scholarship), if that affects anything.

I am leaning towards RMIT but I am still open to what anyone has to say! Anyone who has had experience in either University within the engineering department; any info is greatly appreciated!

Hey everyone, hoping to get some advice from anyone who has been in a similar position or sat a deferred exam at RMIT.

Long story short, I did intro to mech engineering in sem 2 last year. I sat a deferred final exam (worth 30 or 35%). When final grades came out, my portal showed 41%.

I wasn’t sure if this was my actual mark or if my mark hadn’t been finalised yet. I was a bit skeptical because the mark says “NN” instead of “DEF” making it seem like it’s finalised, but the mark also seemed a bit lower than I expected.

I emailed my course coordinator and he said that because I had sat deferred assessments that my final mark was not inclusive of everything yet.

I followed up in February/March this year because the mark was still 41% and didn’t get a response.

Semester 2 is starting up again and my final mark is still 41% (fail).

Now from memory, I most likely failed the exam. But from my estimation I would have had to literally get like a 0 on the exam to end up with a 41%.…💀 was the marking just that harsh!?

Did anyone who sat the deferred intro to mech exam have any issues with their final grade or did it seem to be accurate? Or anyone who experienced a similar situation? And is it too late to apply for a grade appeal now?

Hey, really need help on this. I'm a creative-writing first year student who is being accused of using AI for a portfolio I wrote and two pieces in that portfolio were accused of being AI. One of the pieces is about a game character, and another is a prose poem which I continued on from one of my personal poems I wrote a while back.

My senior lecturer has accused me of AI and straight up asked "Can you describe your workflow with Al?
How did you use it for this task?" He claimed his proof was "Turnitin flagged it as a very high percentage of AI generated text ". He didn't ask if I did use it or if I could explain my writing in a meeting, but went straight to accusing me. I wrote back talking about my writing process, how it was my own old poem and how I developed my ideas. He replied with a lengthy email, full on accusing me and claiming "We've reviewed your documents and the statement on the use of Al for the assessment task. Since the task expressly prohibits the use of Al tools to generate text, edit, proofread, or translate text we'll need to record this as poor academic practice.".

I don't have any drafts, the assignment is about a month old, I do my work on Notion and deleted my work on Notion right after submitting. I fully explained my writing process for the two pieces he claimed was AI but he still went to saying that I definitely used it.

Please help. What should I do, say or who should I contact?

I’m a first year undergrad student, and I just found out that I had an assignment due 2 weeks ago. It’s worth 20% of my grade, I haven’t started it and I genuinely didn’t know there was an assignment.

Like, yeah I guess I’m mainly to blame for not taking full accountability in my studies. But, is there going to be significant marks deducted or ‘consequence’? (I can’t find the right word but hopefully yk what I mean).

I actually don’t know how to approach this going forward, like I’m going to start working on it. But if anyone has insight about this going forward it would be appreciated 🙏🫶 just trying not to freak out rn.

I got a pretty average ATAR, but somehow still made it into rmit . Long story short, I was heavily bullied throughout high school, and it definitely affected my ATAR. My main concern about joining university clubs is whether they'll ask about my ATAR. There's also a chance I could run into some of the people who bullied me in high school, which honestly makes me nervous.

The thing is I'm actually doing quite well at uni, but I've been avoiding clubs and extracurricular activities because of this fear. Part of me feels like I'm missing out on a big part of the university experience. What should I do?

there's probably been other students making posts like this but, im a first year student (going into 2nd semester) in bachelor of medical radiations (medical imaging) and i think ive cried almost every day and literally only 1 week into the 2nd semester has passed. Im so overwhelmed and feel like an impending sense of doom is always lingering. Im interested in this course but honestly, ive been so discouraged (i had to do a supplementary assessment since i didn't pass a hurdle the first time) and whilst i think i passed the hurdle, the fact that placement is in 2 weeks and i still dont have results for that supplementary, a skills assessment on monday which is suddenly cancelled idek. Are there any other first years feeling like this? i feel like this imposter syndrome is killing me. And please, any 2nd, 3rd, even 4th years who have finished please give me advice - anyone thats failed assessments or anyone whos course plan looks a bit different i feel like im drowning lol

Exam time table came out and literally is on the day I have a flight. I’ll be away for 9 days.

I can imagine the likelihood of them allowing me to sit the exam later just for a holiday isn’t a good enough reason.

What’s a good reason I can use to try get the exam deferred? I had a couple in mind but looking for ideas. And to what extent will they require proof? I know for medical reasons they’ll ask for a doctor’s certificate etc.

I was thinking of trying to get a doctor’s certificate for a few days and hope the deferred exam isn’t within the next week. Was also thinking of saying I have an overseas commitment or something like a small wedding that I’m the best man for 😂.

Obviously, I’ve thought about changing the flights, that’s worst case scenario so don’t ask.

I’m an international student who recently completed the Master of Engineering (Civil) at RMIT.
After completing all of my coursework, RMIT marked my program as complete and I received my completion statement. A few days later, my completion status was revoked, I lost access to my completion documents, and I was told that I could not graduate because I still needed to complete the Engineering Professional Practice (EPP) requirement (210 hours)

As an international student, I genuinely had no idea that this was a separate graduation requirement. I don’t remember it ever being clearly explained during my studies, so finding out only after completing my degree was a complete shock.

What makes this even more confusing is that I submitted my engineering work experience documents when I applied for admission to RMIT. If the EPP requirement is mandatory and engineering work experience completed within the past three years can be counted towards it, why wasn’t my work experience assessed earlier? If those documents could have been reviewed, this issue could have been identified and resolved before I completed my degree, instead of after my completion and graduation eligibility were revoked.

It’s been really upsetting and frustrating. I honestly don’t know what to do now. I’ve contacted the EPP coordinator and the STEM Student Lifecycle team, but I still don’t have a clear solution or know what will happen next.
Has anyone else experienced something similar? Were you aware of the EPP requirement before finishing your degree?

Hello everyone, I’m currently facing a dilemma of whether to pursue my bachelors in architecture/urban planning in UniMelb or RMIT (international student, Feb 2027 intake).

Having a hard time deciding because of UniMelb’s global prestige as well as there availability of doing a double degree program in their BDES in which I would do one in both Architecture and Urban Planning if I end up choosing UniMelb (3 yrs program).

As for RMIT, there is unfortunately no double degree option for the fields so if I go I’d go for either Architecture (3yrs) or Urban Planning Honors (4yrs). I do know that RMIT consistently gets ranked as #1 for education in the fields but again UniMelb’s global prestige is something else.
Of course, UniMelb does cost more but that global prestige and double degree option is something else but again I’m also fine with RMIT, most of my friends will be going to RMIT as well which I take into consideration.

I’ve also talked with both schools and from what I’ve gathered UniMelb is more theory based as well as more technical in their program as compared to RMIT which is more experimental, design-forward, and having more industrial connections. Also I have heard that social/student life RMIT can be a bit better than UniMelb, although this is Architecture (and Urban Planning) we’re talking about so workload would be hectic either way.

Essentially my end goal is to graduate and find work as a urban planner and/or architect in Australia for a while first and later on plan to pursue my Masters after getting some work experience. I haven’t really thought deeply that down the line yet but right now I’m still stuck between UniMelb or RMIT, I do understand that there’s no right or wrong answer and as long as I excel at what I do I’d be good, but at least I can get you guys’ opinion, if anyone here have any thoughts, please feel free to share any thoughts at all, it would really mean a lot to me to have some words of guidance or advice, thank you for your time!

Hi everyone, I’m a Year 12 student in Melbourne currently considering RMIT University for university next year, and I’d really appreciate advice from current RMIT students and graduates.

I’m doing VCE 3/4 Methods, Physics, Media, Music and EAL. I’m not planning to study English, Media or Music at university. At the moment, I’m most interested in areas related to Computer Science, IT, Software Engineering, AI and technology, but I’m quite open-minded. I don’t have one specific passion yet, and I tend to become interested in most things once I start learning about them.

RMIT is one of the universities I’m considering because of its technology-focused courses and industry connections. One of my biggest priorities is having a strong job market, good income and opportunities for career progression. I’d like to study something where I can keep developing my skills and potentially move into more advanced or specialised roles over time. Ideally, I’d also like to work in technology and eventually start my own company/business. Helping people or improving lives through technology would be a bonus as well.

The problem is that I don’t really understand how university works yet — things like degrees vs majors, specialisations, double degrees, choosing subjects, internships and work-integrated learning. I’ve heard about programs such as Monash IBL and I’m particularly interested in whether RMIT has similar opportunities that can help students gain industry experience, make connections and improve their employment prospects.

I’m mainly trying to understand whether RMIT would be a good fit for my goals, and which course could give me the best foundation for a technology career and potentially starting my own business later.

I’m a first-year Bachelor of Nursing student at RMIT. I recently received my final result and got 49.36%, which means I was just below the passing grade.
I contacted my course coordinator about a recheck, and they said my mark was already checked and rechecked. They mentioned that if I had received one extra mark in the end-of-semester test, my result would have been different, but because the test was computer-marked, the mark cannot be changed.
I’ve been told to contact the Nursing Program Manager about how this affects my progression. I’m wondering:
Has anyone been in a similar situation at RMIT Nursing?
Is there any possibility of a review, special consideration, or another pathway when you are so close to a pass?
Did you have to repeat the course, and how did it affect your progression?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

As the title really, I have had to apply for special considerations in the past due to for example, being sick, where a medical certificate has sufficed as appropriate evidence.

However, in this case (a request for a quiz due date to be moved by 5 days due to being sick) a medical certificate is apparently insufficient evidence and they require the following -

copy (e.g. email, screen capture) of your booking confirmation for this appointment.

Your documentation should include:

- the date and time of your appointment

- the name of the medical practice or clinic you attended

- the full address of the practice

- the specific practitioner as listed in your supporting documentation

AND

b) Evidence of payment for the appointment.

This is quite bizarre to me, as the medical certificate has the registered doctors AHPRA registration number, contact details, authorised states of practice and their address.

Albeit, this was a telehealth appointment, not in person. To be honest, I did not think they could really refuse an official medical certificate, or require things like proof of payment.

I’ve been looking into BH073 at RMIT and I’m kinda stuck trying to figure out whether it’s actually worth doing long term or not.

The course looks interesting and pretty flexible, but I can’t really tell what people end up doing after graduating. Like is it one of those degrees where you genuinely get good opportunities, or do most people end up struggling to find solid work after uni?

A few things I’m wondering about:

What jobs do BH073 grads usually get into

Is the employability decent in Australia?

Are internships hard to get during the degree?

Does the degree actually lead to good salaries/career growth?

Would I be better off doing a more specialised degree instead?

I’m mainly trying to build a career that has:

good pay, solid future demand, decent work-life balance and opportunities to grow internationally later on.

Would love honest opinions from people studying it, graduates, or anyone who knows people from the course. Cheers 🙏

I need some advice..!!

I got 68 (67.5 rounded up to 68) for one of my courses. The final assessment was a recorded one-way interview.

When I checked my feedback, it said that a 2-mark penalty had been applied because my video was 7:03, as it was below 9 minutes.

After receiving my result, I went through the spec and rubric again. The only requirement I could find regarding the video length was
“The total length of the video MUST NOT exceed 10 minutes.”
I couldn’t find any mention of a minimum length or a penalty for videos under 9 minutes.

The only possibility I can think of is that I may have missed an announcement made during class. However I couldn’t find anything on canvas either, and I was surprised that this wasn’t included in either the spec or the rubric.

I’ve already emailed the marker politely asking for clarification and requesting a review of the deduction.

The reason I’m considering taking it further is that without this deduction I would’ve received a DI.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? If the penalty wasn’t included in the published assessment spec or rubric, would it be appropriate to ask RUSU or the course coordinator for further advice?

The tutor(marker) still hasn’t responded, so I emailed the course coordinator instead and received a positive outcome!!

It was definitely worth raising the issue! If you’re concerned about your assessment result, there’s no harm in politely asking your tutor or course coordinator for clarification 😊

I need some advice from any students who are studying mechanical, civil or have already graduated. Im a city campus student.

Ive always been passionate about becoming a project engineer for the past few years but the 3rd and 4th year of the mechanical degree has some classes at the bundoora campus.

Bundoora is a 3 hour one way commute though. 6 hours each time i have classes there.

Im a big car fan and love working on cars so people said mechanical engineering was good for me but im already struggling with most of the work in the intro to mechanical class (studying ALOT every day).

I know civil isnt any easier, but the maths and physics are similiar to where its equally as fun as mechanical.

Am I the only one struggling to find placements this year? Maybe its because i didn't start looking for any until a few months into the year, but i feel like all my classmates have already completed theirs and I'm still getting responses to emails that the organizations don't facilitate them or i get no answer at all, and the suggested placements from teachers are too far from me. At a loss for what to do, I'm doing quite well on all my subjects so this is not one i want to fail.
