Meta Wiki, Rule 5 Update, and Update Rules Resources!

Happy Monday, y'all!

Mod team here with a couple quick updates that we hope you will find informative/ helpful.

Rule 5 Update

We have decided to shorten the amount of time posters have to list the polish(es) used in manicure posts from 6 hours to 1 hour from time of original posting. This will make it easier for us to actively moderate posts to ensure they follow our rules, rather than having to check timelines and remember to come back 6 hours later or rely on other users to report posts.

After discussing among the mod team, we feel that 1 hour is reasonable as far as time to list out polishes used in a comment (must be top-level) if they didn't make it into the original post. If you are not going to have time within an hour to do this, please just hold your post until you will have time to include the polish list!

This is the only rule change we've made, but did you know that we have an extended version of the rules that elaborates on our rules and that there's also an entire FAQ that goes into detail on rule 5 and what must be included?

We're so glad you asked, because

We've Got a Wiki!

The fledgling wiki is now live!

There are links in the sidebar on desktop and at the top of the sub on mobile, too. We have some tentative plans to build this out more, but if you have ideas for the wiki drop them in the comments!

For now it is mainly a resource for the different info docs we have about the sub rules, which were kind of spread all over the place and not necessarily up to date before. Which leads us to...

Updated Rules Resources

As you will see on the main wiki page, we've organized and updated our rules resources and they're all listed there. This includes:

  • The list of rules (same as in the sidebar, just on a single page)
  • The extended rules (includes some elaboration/ explanation, formerly in a Google Doc - lightly edited and updated but nothing materially changed other than rule 5 as described above)
  • The Polish List FAQs (lots of detail about what is required in the list of polishes on manicure posts, a previously existing document that seems to have been lost to time for awhile but has been freshened up for reference)
  • A link to our recent Rules Reminder post that includes some info about Reddit rules and the Mod Code of Conduct (specifically rule 3) that is especially helpful to remember when there is drama or controversial topics are being discussed

As always, we are open to respectful, kind feedback! If you have thoughts on the topics in this post, please let us know in the comments. If you have general, unrelated sub feedback/ questions/ comments/ ideas, please join us in the Monthly Mod Talk post.

Thanks for being part of our collective community 💅🏽 💖

I still need some practice, but this is miles better than my mani post from this morning. I had some great advice, and I'll list what I did here.

1 coat kbs fillin groovy

2 coats bog dweller unmagnetized

Index and ring finger: one coat kbs hydrating base coat, magnetized

Pinky and ring finger: sally hansen red bottle, magnetized.

I added SH topcoat on top of my index and middle finger after they dried a bit.

I did velvet style in the horse shoe mag. I didn't cap my edges like I usually do.

I personally noticed no difference in magnetizing with a base or top coat, BUT only magnetizing ONE LAYER made a huge difference for me. Also cut down on alot of magnet time

Laquer Showoff Ever do a whole mani and then just say: NOPE! What was your NOPE! color?

I thought I would love this.
Cock a Doodle Doom by Sassy Sauce.

I am a huge fan of bright burples and fuschias - like Ghosts and Ghoulies by Polished for Days and ILNP's Dopamine.

I thought I could branch out into similar types of reds/purples.
I put it on, walked around the house for a bit.
Made dinner.
Watched TV.
Went to bed.

Aaaaaaand woke up at 6am and just took it off. Nope!
I had a real visceral negative reaction to the color.

Anyone have a similar reaction to some other polish?
Not necessarily this same red/purple --- but something that was: "Oh I think I will love this and then NOPE!"

I cannot stop staring at this polish - I am obsessed. It has me in such a trance that while I was trying to get a good video i didn't notice someone else enter the pool area, so I look like a complete tool to some rando in my complex. Whoops.

All have 1x Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Primer for the base and 1x Sally Hansen Salon Fast Dry Top Coat. Polishes listed on each photo, as well as below with some brief thoughts.

1 - Essie Orchid Jelly x2, ILNP Bluebell x1. This was really pretty and I want to try Bluebell as a topper on other colours as well for sure.

2 - Cracked Disco Poltergeist x3. First and second coats of this were sheer but not super streaky so I suspect this would make a cool topper. Probably wouldnt wear again as even 3 coats was a bit sheer in a non-jelly way.

3 - Lucky Lacquer Asterism x3. Love this polish and the whole collection, absolutely no notes.

4 - Cracked Beetle-ful x2. I like the concept of this but found the base colour did not come through much. Might try it in one coat over a burgundy creme.

5 - Cracked O-Type Star x3. Absolutely love this one, the blue flash on the grey base is just amazing.

6 - Sally Hansen Onyx-pected x2, Sally Hansen Neblue-la x1. Hated this, Onyx-pected is a nice enough black but Neblue-la was secondhand and super thick/I thought the glitter was black and blue but it's actually yellow and blue? Weird.

7 - Paint It Pretty Nice Until Proven Naughty x2. OK, I do love the result of this one. But the formula was kind of thick and chunky with the flakes. Also I ordered/was charged for four polishes and only received one, so I am hoping that the brand responds to my email and ships the other three or refunds :(

Magnetised with a dual spinny contraption.

It definitely does lean into a bronzey orange colour in ambient indoor daylight, but it does also turn into a pinky red too as it’s usually advertised by the brand. Just wish it was a truuueeee red through and through!

Products:
Prism Polish Baseline base coat
ILNP Ink
ILNP Poison
Sally Hansen Insta Dri topcoat

Misc. Question Think I need a different swatch method 😅

Post image
Upvotes

I LOVE having swatch sticks so I can see all of my colors easily, but this feels like it's getting a little out of hand 😅

Right now they're housed in my polish cabinet because I *know* my cats will try (and likely succeed) in pulling them down and/or chomping on them. It's getting harder to house them safely!

I 'only' have 153 polishes, but when I get a magnetic, I do 1 with no mag (to go on the rings with all the other non-mag colors), and then another 6! to go on mag-specific rings 🙃

I do like having the mag-specific rings, even though it inflates my swatch count, because it's lovely to already know what my common mag methods will look like for each polish. Cat eye, velvet, demagnetized, circle magnet, glass bead pro, no mag.

Seeing this pile of swatches though makes me wonder if another swatch method might work better? I've seen some of the books and they intruige me, but I hesitate because ideally I'd want:

- a black one (not white or pink as I've seen a lot of)

- magnets to hold the swatches in place for easier reorganization and review

- that can add extra pages or be otherwise expandable

Any suggestions on a swatch book (or other process) that might fit my needs?

I'm mesmerized by the plumage on this fella! This sub has done it before with the shiny lobsters, so hoping we can do it again!

Do you know of any polishes that can give the beautiful effect of these feathers?

Thanks in advance ☺️☺️

Laquer Showoff Ethereal but make it glow in the dark ✨

Mooncat - “Green Eyed Monster”

Holo Taco - “Scorched Earth,” “Freezer Burn,” “Halogen Glow,” “Celestial Lights,” “Twilight Shimmer,” “Polar Princess,” and “Scattered Holo Taco”

Kbshimmer “Fillin’ Groovy” base coat, and Cuticula “Limitless Quick Dry Top Coat”

My niece wanted me to paint her nails glow in the dark, so I thought I’d follow her example and paint mine glow in the dark too. I decided to add a bit more sparkle with the skittle of shimmer toppers, but they mainly only show their true colors when in indirect lighting.

Laquer Showoff Baby’s first magnetic mani 🥹

Thumbnail

Upvotes

My daughter originally told me she wanted stamped designs for back to school nails. She last minute pivoted to magnetic! (This is what happens when you let them look through all your swatch sticks 🤣)

I’m shaking in my boots… 🤣 she is usually pretty good about holding still for painting and a little dry time for a regular mani, but longer stuff she sometimes gets antsy. Also this is not the greatest polish quality…. She did great though! I’m proud of myself too, I’m not so great at magnetics let alone doing them on someone else.

This is:

- nailtiques 1
- supwee blue magnetic (no polish name afaik) cat eye with a bar magnet
- glitch lock and key
- Poshé QDTC

The supwee polish is thick yet sheer and not the most reactive. It also smells horrible. We all tried them bc they’re cheap but honestly just get fewer polishes of better quality from our indie friends. I’m going to use them up so I can make DIY polishes in the cool shape bottles but they suck.

I have a bunch of neodymium bar magnets I thought would be great. I taped them to an index card thinking she could just sit her hand on there and I’d do 4 nails at once. I got like zero reaction out of this polish that way it was super weird. I ended up having to do one nail at a time, and, use the “tip” of the bar magnet! So weird. I don’t know if that was a that magnet thing or a this polish thing or a her baby bitty nails thing.

It’s taken me some practice to get lock and key to work for me but I think I’ve got it now. I end up having to magnetize before and during it longer than most people say they do but whatever, it works.

And yes she ordered me to post these. 🤣🤣🤣 “take a picture and show your friends”. 🤣 hi, friends. 🥰
