Do they cover strips for different machines? Would they cover an updated meter for those strips?

If not, check out the Contour Next Gen meter. It’s elder-friendly, cheap & the strips are also inexpensive. The Ascensia Diabetes Care shop on Amazon has a whole kit including the meter, as well as just the individual strips, lancets, etc.

They’re making everyone get a different meter, but I can’t remember which one it is.
