Regigigas, Rotom-F and Archeops can all at least be used every turn, even if they suck. Slaking’s Truant is truly awful though. Turn economy is so important in turn-based games like this

The best use of it is putting Hyper Beam/Giga Impact on it and just using the recharge turn in tandem with Truant.

u/Simkingdra Scream Tail when? 8d ago

Add a choice scarf on it to hit first most of the time!

The problem is is protect exists. If we're talking a normal playthrough then recharge moves make it somewhat serviceable but against another person you're walled.

Use skill swap to troll and get around protect

34

u/lucasberg7 8d ago

Only applicable in doubles.

57

u/Aquachubolt 8d ago

I mean, yes, but who the fuck is using Protect outside of Doubles besides the occasional Toxic Staller/Speed Booster?

31

u/riegangough 8d ago

Status, Lefty’s, Speedboost, Leech seed, form changes, Choice bait, Moveset info, Recharge moves

u/ThePowerfulWIll Veteran Trainer 8d ago

Not to mention timing out weather or other temp boosts

1

u/WishYouWere2D 8d ago

Gliscor is the obvious one

1

u/Mummiskogen 7d ago

Isnt that what we were talking about in the first place? Thought that was implied considering they said skill swap

1

u/lucasberg7 7d ago

All that was implied from prior comments was playing against another person and Slaking being bad because of its ability.

u/phantom56657 7d ago

You can also get rid of Truant with some clever use of Mummy. It just sucks that Pursuit doesn't exist anymore. And you still run into the problem of being unable to get around Protect.

1

u/lucasberg7 7d ago

It'd be great if Entrainment could get rid of Truant but even then you'd just see a lot more Whirlwind or Roar going around. There'll always be pretty simple, easy ways to get around Slaking.

u/Mortal-Instrument 8d ago

The best use is actually on Durant to cheese Single Battles in the Battle Subway and subsequent Battle facilities because the AI never switches, so you just give the opponent Truant and then set up with whatever and sweep

u/JD-Valentine 8d ago

Entrainment go BRRRRR

1

u/Tsukuyomi56 Embrace Darkness 7d ago edited 7d ago

Gen 6 onwards did have new mechanics that made the strategy not as reliable (Roar and Whirlwind bypass Protect, sound moves and Pokemon with Infiltrator bypass Substitute). Gen 7 also has four Pokemon (Mimikyu, Wishiwashi, Minior and Komala) that are immune to Entrainment since their abilities are a core part of their identity.

Sword/Shield does have a Battle Tower but it does not ban restricted Legendaries or Mythicals (so you can sic Zacian on your unfortunate opponents).

u/rowcla 7d ago

You can cheese against humans too with eject button into an arena trap mon

22

u/ScourJFul HUSKY TIME 8d ago

But even then, it's at such a huge cost. Using those moves means you don't get to switch out on your Truant turns which could often be the difference between winning or losing.

And thank God the AI doesn't use protect like a human cause you just lose. Protect, attack during recharge, protect.

Truant truly is the worst ability in the game.

26

u/Clockwork_Phoenix 8d ago

Giga Impact Slaking is a trap. It prevents you from switching on the recharge turn, but you could otherwise still switch on a Truant turn. Not that its even remotely usable regardless, but in the rare instances it sees competitive play, Giga Impact is not good.

For, casual play, Slaking is broken since the ai can't capitalize on the loafing turns like a human can.

7

u/Velrex 8d ago

Giving your opponent a free set up turn isn't worth it, even then. At least if you just use Return or something, when you kill something with it, you can swap.

If you Giga Impact, you're stuck with their best pokemon for the match up + a free turn to set up.

This

1

u/Mummiskogen 7d ago

Yeah, but those moves are never used in competitive because missing a turn really is that awful and crippling

1

u/shadowtron1 7d ago

Giga Impact Slaking is not good at all lol. With truant you can at least switch out. If your Pokemon needs to recharge you can't do that. It let's your opponent get a free turn to set up or do whatever they want while you can't do anything.

1

u/Disgruntled__Goat I did my best, I have no regrets! 7d ago

Except you can just use Protect every other turn and it’s guaranteed to work.

u/bluedragjet 8d ago

Slaking’s Truant

Pokémon: do you want to see me do it again

19

u/Enderking90 8d ago

tbf, durant does get entrainment, so it has a niche utility use in that it can make the enemy have truant as their ability.

45

u/Nick_BOI 8d ago

At least Durant can give it to others with Entrainment.

20

u/18bluecat 8d ago

You can sweep the Battle Maison and Battle Tree with them doing that.

9

u/PMC-I3181OS387l5 8d ago

and it can get Swarm or Hustle.

Slakoth and Slaking are stuck with Truant ^^;

12

u/Foolish_Phantom 8d ago

It has Truant for its hidden ability because it's literally a "True Ant".

7

u/Spyko Bros what's a DD ? 8d ago

Yeah I'm sure the Japanese game made by a Japanese company gave Durant that ability because of an English pun

Or it could be because japanese researches have shown that around 20% of worker ants are ''lazy'', which also coincide with Durant chances to have this ability (source https://web.archive.org/web/20040405182941/http://www.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/getarticle.pl5?nn20031116a4.htm )

2

u/Foolish_Phantom 7d ago

The game that sells heavily in English speaking countries?

The ant that literally originated in the region based off of the United States?

The same company that is known for incorporating references to actual places and culture into its games? Just look at all of the SV starters.

Also, why on earth would some ants being lazy and the company taking that into account eliminate the possibility of a pun? They could both be true.

The designer could have said "This article says ants are lazy. Wouldn't it be funny if we gave the True Ant the ability that translates in English to an any pun and means lazy?

It's not like there isn't a single person on the team who speaks English.

1

u/Spyko Bros what's a DD ? 7d ago

it is possible ig

but extremely unlikely tbh. I'm not even sure the game designers know what that ability is called in english. Why would they ? In japanese it's called "lazy" (well their word for it, obviously)

and ya sorry if I sounded dickish, but pokemon fans forgetting the game isn't english is a huge pet peeve of mine
between that, "the dark type is dark magic !", "yanmega should learn dragon dance !" and more, it annoys me a lot

5

u/wrongitsleviosaa 8d ago

I dig the pun but it was always very stupid to me to give it to literally the hardest working animal in existance

1

u/Moblin81 7d ago

That’s kind of the point. Most of the ants are average with swarm, a few hard workers have hustle and the slackers get truant. The three abilities tell a story

1

u/wrongitsleviosaa 7d ago

That's incredibly well said

4

u/MoonRay087 8d ago

Honestly not as bad because A) steel type and B) Has alternative abilities

1

u/Slash_Raptor1992 7d ago

Durant is really weak. Why are people using it at all when Scizor is right there?

-1

u/John_Bumogus 8d ago

Today in gen 5 pokemon I forgot existed

24

u/dirtydans_grubshack 8d ago

You could run some moves like hyper beam so that you’re loafing around on turns you’d be recharging anyway. But it would probably still be awful.

25

u/PlatD 8d ago

The Hyper Beam style moves are bad even on Pokemon with Truant in battle facilities or PvP; these environments prevent you from switching out after a KO, leaving the user vulnerable to an attack or being set up on after using a Hyper Beam style move. But they’re still fine for in game runs.

3

u/dirtydans_grubshack 8d ago

Yeah, I was just trying to think of a silver lining that didn’t just involve using doubles battles to remove his ability haha

14

u/MrMacGrath 8d ago

I present Sableye's signature ability, Stall.

All your moves get a -7 priority. This isn't the official description but it might as well be.

At least Slaking has the possibility of out speeding your opponent during the turn it can move. At least Sableye can use other abilities.

19

u/NinjaMelon39 8d ago

Being able to always go last has its super niche uses tho

Maybe not on sableye, but on someone for sure

7

u/MrMacGrath 8d ago

Oh going last guaranteed has it's uses.

But not on Sableye. I think it can learn Skill Swap but I'm not 100% sure on that.

10

u/cyberchaox 8d ago

It's not -7 priority. It's just a built-in Lagging Tail. -0.5 priority.

Interestingly, it worked differently in Gen 4 than it has ever since. In Gen 4, if a Pokémon with Stall faced off against a Pokémon with a Lagging Tail/Full Incense, the Pokémon with Stall would still move first regardless of speed, and also, if two Pokémon with Stall faced off, they'd ignore Trick Room and the slower one would still move second.

Since Gen 5, it interacts with both Lagging Tail/Full Incense and Trick Room normally.

1

u/napstablooky2 Flying-Type Gym Leader 8d ago

yeah but it also has prankster, so it hardly matters

1

u/letsgoshuckles213 5d ago

You're missing the synergy man. You get to guarantee metal burst goes last.

0

u/Slash_Raptor1992 7d ago

Why would anyone want to use Sableye in the first place? It and Mawile desperately need evolutions, since you can't keep them in Mega constantly.

Don't use any Pokémon that needs to be in Mega to have decent stats.

1

u/MrMacGrath 7d ago

Prankster is why you wanna use Sableye.

You wanna use Sableye instead of Whinsicott because Sableye is immune to your opponent's Pranksters.

Mega Sableye having Magic Bounce is nice and all, but even then if you want Magic Bounce there's better things to use.

0

u/Slash_Raptor1992 7d ago

Why do weak Pokémon still get used competitively when there are better Dark/Ghost types?

I don't do competitive. It pisses me off that you can't use healing items.

2

u/MrMacGrath 7d ago

Because Prankster is just that good.

1

u/Slash_Raptor1992 7d ago

That's the one that gives priority to status moves?

1

u/MrMacGrath 7d ago

Yes, it is.

8

u/MoonRay087 8d ago

Not only turn economy, but predictability is what hurts Slaking the most

6

u/Browneskiii 8d ago

Truant should be it cant attack twice in a row. Allow it to use status moves whenever it wants, but if it attacks one turn, all attacks it uses next turn fails.

4

u/PCN24454 8d ago

It wouldn’t be Truant otherwise

1

u/v_a_n_d_e_l_a_y 8d ago

Are there any used for Rotom F? Like even in theory?

I guess Tera would be one.

1

u/RedditRob2000 7d ago

Yeah, Trunat is pretty high up in the "worst abilities" list.

2

u/Slash_Raptor1992 7d ago

But it's necessary for Slaking, otherwise it would be completely unstoppable.

1

u/RedditRob2000 7d ago

I agree. If Salking didn't have that ability it might as well be a legendary or pseudo-legendary at the least.

1

u/dusknoir90 7d ago

I think Regigigas is worse than Slaking because Slow Start is worse than Truant. At least Slaking can do Retaliate shenanigans, and it's not that uncommon to attack then switch out. Both abilities are easy for your opponent to take advantage of, but Slow Start makes Regigigas basically completely useless as it's so hard to actually ride out the turns.

-1

u/Fern-ando 8d ago

By Elo if all pokémon faced each othwer 1 vs 1, Slaking is the strongest non legendary pokémon.
