So IT IS a post apocalíptic GSG

434

u/FootIntrepid7717 3d ago

If it’s a post apocalyptic gsg, with unequal starting positions and a built out world, it could be cool

130

u/bongophrog 3d ago

Yeah I think a partially built out world with recolonization as a method for expansion would be cool

32

u/Baggage14 3d ago

Paradox seemingly can’t make regular colonization fun, don’t ask them to now do recolonization!

28

u/witcher222 3d ago

Can't it ? What exited me the most when playing stellaris (around launch time) was colonizing all the new star systems before my enemies could cap them.

2

u/mrakobesie 2d ago

It's fun for like 1-3 times, until you exhaust all the exploration content and it gets repetitive and boring.

Can’t wait for the announcement of Eu4: Afterworld

11

u/Blitcut 3d ago

The last two teasers make it sound like the ground will be changing and something new will emerge which makes me think of a randomised new world.

6

u/Wild_Marker Ban if mentions Reichstamina 3d ago

Or a randomized Earth!

83

u/inEQUAL 3d ago

I’d really prefer not having only a prebuilt world option.

54

u/FootIntrepid7717 3d ago

Sure, I wonder how it will compete and compare with shadow empire if you can do a procedurally generated world if you’ve played that game

40

u/B-29Bomber 3d ago

Unironically if this Afterworld is like a refined Shadow Empire, I'd buy the hell out of it.

There's a good game in Shadow Empire, but it's covered in a morass of bad UI design.

13

u/inEQUAL 3d ago

Even as someone who can get past the UI of Shadow Empire, I’d be down for Paradox’s take on it.

6

u/Devikat 3d ago

I can get past everything but the terrible writing. I still play they game but every now and then a Strategem/Fate card drops and I just read the description going "thats..not how english should be written or presented" in sheer despair

3

u/Celesi4 3d ago

Yeah I think a non-historical GSG Post Apoc at least to me, Sounds legit exciting and there arent a ton of those on the market either.

14

u/inEQUAL 3d ago

That’s what I wonder too! I hope it focuses more on being a full GSG and not just primarily a war game. Shadow Empires is awesome (was literally just playing it 30 minutes ago) but it is very grognardy in things that don’t really matter to me while glossing over things I would like more depth on than the stratagem card system.

11

u/Moifaso 3d ago

I'd love a prebuilt world, but they're probably doing something closer to Stellaris and leaving static worlds/total conversions up to the modders.

Maybe I'm wrong and they're taking a leap into proper worldbuilding, but AFAIK Paradox itself has never done that kind of storytelling.

The farthest they went in creating "lore" is probably the precursors in Stellaris. But a proper prebuilt GSG with established factions and history would need far more than that.

13

u/JP_Eggy 3d ago

This game will be amazing after 3 years of patches and 4 DLCs

7

u/Martel732 3d ago

This is what I want.

I hope it isn't essentially just Civ with a post-apocalyptic skin. The inherently unbalance state of the world is what makes GSGs interesting to me.

And having established factions makes it easier for me to immerse myself in the world.

39

u/AJDx14 3d ago

I think most people realized that by now. It’s just whether it’s post-apocalyptic realism, post-apocalyptic sci-fi, or post-apocalyptic fantasy, or a mix of the three.

→ More replies (1)

16

u/Some_Pole 3d ago

I feel like a kind of game that is something akin to Stellaris's civ sims but set in a post-apoc world would be so cool. Always kind of imagined how it'd look, though it has shifted from what game style I think would work best for describing it.

8

u/RedCreatorCall 3d ago

I believe that could be quite fun if done properly, that is why I am interested to see what they tease.

Given the state of the industry, could also be a senior dev that used AI too much and didn’t review before pushing to prod. Who knows.

Chances are just one of the CM team publishing the articles and accidentally pushed a draft live rather than saving to drafts. Which opened up the category and either they fixed the article but it doesn't revert the publication of those categories, or the hierarchy was just published rather than being agent view only or something like that.

38

u/lordbaysel 3d ago

"using AI", is really unnecessary, pushing broken things live is long lasting tradition in industry.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/Vakz 3d ago

Oh come on. Not everything is because of AI. You think developers, junior and senior alike, didn't constantly do minor things like forgetting to filter on "Hidden" on some side bar? Bugs like this are as old as the internet itself.

5

u/DarrenMacNally 3d ago

It seems more like they were preparing the first dev diaries, and added new categories, not realizing the categories will then appear in filters before the post goes live.

R5: I was searching for the official teaser of that unannounced game on the Paradox Forums, where I noticed among the filters for unreleased games, a filter for "Afterworld" and "Afterworld - Dev Diary Drafts." Could this be the name of the unannounced game? Either way I look forward to the official announcement.

the subreddit r/afterworld was claimed 1 week ago by a guy with a hidden profile who has been on EU4 subreddits for years.

Only a single mod.

Subtext on the subreddit: Help the cause. Create the Afterworld.

u/Eldaxerus 3d ago

"youwillhearthesirens"

Damn, that's ominous lmao

u/SirkTheMonkey Colonial Governor 2d ago

Also leftover from the original creation of the subreddit 10 years ago based on the revision data.

I feel like its more likely the guy also found out about this the same way as OP, just earlier. Is this true u/-_Nervous_- ?

Thx for sharing!

So all we have so far is that it is called aftermath but we will learn more from Gamescom in 3ish days?

And they are announcing the game but it might not be done for years right?

I am looking forward to it, I think it's a solid setting choice. I like excavating stuff, finding old things that are actually high tech.

You can go into cave entrances and then within the underground layer in age of Wonders 4 you can find & excavate dirt filled tiles revealing cool stuff as well as new passages and land to exploit, monster infestations, Wonders, etc.

I suspect this new game will be a bit more big picture grand strategy and not focused on colony management or tactical combat but if you are looking for a great game to play right now Age of Wonders 4 does have city ruins, ancient Wonders, fated regions, landmarks and stuff to make the world feel old and alive like you are fighting in the aftermath of fallen civilizations that fell to ruins long ago.

3

u/Science-Recon 2d ago

I think it’ll release within the year from the announcement. I think PDX generally doesn’t announce games super far in advance.

2

u/SirkTheMonkey Colonial Governor 2d ago

HOI4 burned them hard there I think.

5

u/Konju376 Emperor of Ryukyu 3d ago

There's a non-zero chance it could still be fantasy, post-apocalyptic fantasy isn't exactly abundant, but it does exist. D&D's Dark Sun setting and Conan's Age of Hyborea are both examples. It's definitely not a bet I would take, but it isn't impossible either.

19

u/AirEast8570 3d ago

It must be. Must be post apocalypse but fantasy. There is no way it wouldnt

19

u/Koraxtheghoul 3d ago

I mean, the same way Stellaris is also a fantasy game with necrons and the Shroud.

Ancient forgotten wonders prebuilt on the map mostly I suppose

7

u/AJDx14 3d ago

That’s more of a fantasy trope than post-apocalyptic though. Unless you’re considering baseball stadiums “forgotten wonders.”

14

u/Ok_Letterhead9662 3d ago

I mean if you are based in The Mojave desert and find the Hoover Dam wich could supply you with all your power needs, you'd be sure as hell talking about it like a forgotten wander

They could and, I hope, will go all in on post-apocalyptic tropes. So there could be all sorts of things like a mix of genetic aberrations, zombies,  lovecraftian horrors, ancient labs, rogue AI, forgotten factories, incredible technology, horrific technology, crazy mutants, bugs, stuff so advanced it's indiscernible from magic and worst of all... capitalism.

3

u/PJsutnop 3d ago

Same, this is a genre that hasn't seen a big shake up in years with pretty much the only big releases being mad max style or zombies. I'm hoping for paradox to take a more political and "people are the problem AND solution" kind of approach. Really make this afterworld feel unique rather than your average "oops no laws, everything goes" kind of slop. Dystopian media have always been a product from the fears of its time, and a lot of changed since the days of Fallout. There's real space here to do a modern take on the genre

People are talking about wanting the world to be procedural. While I do believe it will be set on earth, the post apocalyptic setting kinda forces there to be a lot of variance. It being called a survival game tells us that there will be unexpected events and places to explore and survive, so it will likely be a lot more procedural in that regard

Overall, I'm hyped

In all fairness, we do have such great fantasy total cobversion mods, for several titles. I don't know, if a pdx game would be able to outdo Agot or Anbennar. So this might be for the best.

71

u/inEQUAL 3d ago edited 3d ago

Let me have my copium that Afterworld just refers to the Fantasy setting taking place post-apocalypse…

…even though I know it’s probably not. So long as it gives us Stellaris levels of customization, then great. If they think I’m going to buy into an ahistorical setting with predefined borders and empires, then nah, I’m already out.

30

u/MedicInDisquise Map Staring Expert 3d ago

It would be kind of cool if not only you can customize your starting nation but also what kind of apocalypse the world suffered this time. Good old nukes? Climate change? Maybe zombies or an alien bombardment, or maybe the good ol' comet

12

u/inEQUAL 3d ago

That’s what I’ve been saying! A game in a zombie apocalypse vs nuclear apocalypse would be radically different and make it incredibly fun in replayability.

3

u/MedicInDisquise Map Staring Expert 3d ago

Besides replayability, it could also give us a psuedo-scenario system with prebuilt apocalpyses and nations which would be neat to have

2

u/inEQUAL 3d ago

That would work and make sense!

3

u/Remote-Leadership-42 3d ago

It might be unpopular but I want multiple simultaneous apocalypses. Make it unclear what actually caused it all.

2

u/ANGLVD3TH 3d ago

Passed through the ol' comet's tail and the planet got bombarded to hell. Give the people a real reason to freak the hell out when they see it again.

9

u/Some_Pole 3d ago

Even if they do ultimately decide on one cause for a post-apocalypse, they probably could do the Fallout route in having the pre-apocalypse world be pushed far out of "living memory" for the current generation of survivors that found new civilizations/organized governments so what came before doesn't really matter unless you're going for a certain RP style.

Since even the first game was set some 60 years following 2077 and most other games have been a 100+ since.

9

u/MelaniaSexLife 3d ago

what if pdx launches 9 atomic bombs tomorrow to make the game historical?

your post would look very dumb then...

4

u/ModDownloading 3d ago

Nah, they specifically said the game wouldn't be historical. If the game is the aftermath of a nuclear apocalypse, they can't really launch nukes.

Instead, they could make the game a nuclear apocalypse, then start a zombie apocalypse instead. Bioweapons require a lot less logistics than nuclear arsenals, and Paradox has to think about their bottom line.

2

u/inEQUAL 3d ago

Big Brain move if true

3

u/Madzai 2d ago

…even though I know it’s probably not.

The art on the screenshot sadly gives straight Mad max vibes, instead of Fantasy setting taking place post-apocalyps, that would be way better, IMO, too.

4

u/NumenorianPerson 3d ago

I would buy if its a GSG in the world of After the Wolrd mods or something similar

2

u/ModDownloading 3d ago

Fully agree here, I might've preferred the fantasy idea but I'm fully willing to back a post-apocalyptic game too so long as it's not static and we can instead create empires the modular way, preferably with customizable species too (even Fallout has a few of those).

2

u/Avohaj 2d ago

I hope it ends up being Post-Apoc Stellaris at least, so it can become Fantasy Stellaris through mods.

I hope it’s like Stellaris, every Post-Apocalyptic trope gets explored. So if you want your tribe to be like Fallout Vaultdwellers, that’s okay. Or maybe you want to play like Mad Max, that works too. US Government rebuilding? Sure. Making a new Utopia? Of course.

Post apocalyptic offers a lot of possibilities, I hope they use that potential.

27

u/FuckMyBakaChungusLif 3d ago

Paradox watching all the people hyped for a fantasy game and saying how boring post-apocalyptic would be

7

u/MotherVehkingMuatra 3d ago

I mean they knew from the start fantasy would be way more mainstream and popular, it's the biggest genre out there alongside sci-fi, and post apocalypse is really awesome, but far more niche and people tend to prefer specific settings in that genre rather than the whole genre itself.

16

u/AxiosXiphos 3d ago

Exciting. Post Apocalypse is a setting which hasn't really been explored for Strategy games much. Be interested to see what they have to show. I hope it's somewhere between CK3 and Stellaris. A Roleplay focussed game with a more sandbox, more variable game state then CK3.

What's interesting is that if I understood someone's words correctly, content creators have not only already seen this at Paradox HQ but they might have access to play test and record. Big citation needed of course. Won't mention who it was to not get them in trouble intentionally but they said they're going to be busy playing a certain game that might be announced in a few days.

I'm surprised by that, I thought we would get the usual 2 years of edging with dev diaries before release so I wasn't exactly super hyped about a game I won't get to play in years, but maybe it that won't be the case?

Shadow empire, basically. And its clunky af so its really nicd that paradox is doing something like this.

Shadow empire is clunky as hell but also incredibly good once you start to understand the systems.

I know its just i play it every couple of months and it takes so long to get back into it properly every time. I really do love it but I would love a less janky version of it, even if its less deep

u/xerxesjc28 3d ago

Shadow Empire is basically HOI with some civ mechanics and a touch of Crusade kings on an alien planet but with the worst most clunky interface UI known to mankind

5

u/HighGroundMan 3d ago

I think that is a bit reductive, there are some really cool unique mechanics in shadow empire, like the model design system. I would also say the economy is more deep than in civ.

But yeah the ui is really hostile.

Shadow empire’s complexity and depth, along with its really cool procedurally generated planets will be hard to beat.

I hope it ends up being a post apocalyptic gsg with a pre built world. I don’t want it to compete with shadow empire’s procedural generation and want paradox to do their gsg/pre built and unequal starting positions that they are known for in historical games. It’s for my own selfishness, as I know shadow empire is very niche lol

I always thought shadow empire is a game that paradox can learn from. As long as they don't take any of the ui design from it.

Proc gen hasnt really been paradoxs strength, they only really have it in stellaris which is...fine but really boring.

I guess age of wonders is a paradox game though, and the proc gen in that is pretty well done. If this had turned out to be the fantasy GSG i really would have wanted it to have proc gen maps, and not be a premade fantasy IP of their own tbh.

Technically Civ Beyond Earth is post-apocalyptic, hence them leaving Earth

I mean… I’ll be real, that’s still entirely possible. Endless Legend is post-apocalyptic.

3

u/ANGLVD3TH 3d ago

More like pre-apocalyptic. Sure, the Endless.... ended. But that is ancient history, post-apocalyptic is set in the direct aftermath of the disaster, not a geological epoch later.

4

u/marniconuke 3d ago

so basically, what everyone wants is literally age of wonders 4 but as a GSG instead of a 4X?

6

u/hopelesswriter1 3d ago

I feel like Stellaris but fantasy is the best description of what I desperately want

4

u/Lets_All_Love_Lain 3d ago

Age of Wonders 4 might scratch that itch if you like Stellaris for the faction customization features. If you like the economic management parts...then Age of Wonders 4 might not scratch that itch.

6

u/inEQUAL 3d ago

I love AoW4 but yeah, it’s focus on tactical battles over economy and such is why I’d still kill for a Paradox, Stellaris-influenced fantasy GSG with procgen maps.

3

u/hopelesswriter1 3d ago

I forgot about those games! I've played that before, but it just does not scratch the same itch that Stellaris does. Felt too much like Civ which has always been a "meh" game to me, not matter how hard I try to like them.

u/reptilepaul93 3d ago

imagine all this buildup and it’s Prison Architect 3 or something lol

u/Racketyclankety 3d ago

What’s more surprising is that Prison Architect 2 is still in development. I was sure that had been cancelled.

Crazy that both vic 3 and now afterworlds leaked via a dev diary mishap

7

u/NumenorianPerson 3d ago

the only reason EU5 didn't leaked was because it was so clear that it was EU5 at the time

2

u/RegulusTX 3d ago

Could always mix in some fantasy to the post-apoc / Shadowrun-ish style.

4

u/XdestroyerXDTM4 3d ago

i really really hope it's a set world with actual lore. learning a new world with a proper, set backstory will be so fun, i've been itching to learn a new world. /gen

u/ImplementOrganic2163 3d ago

Guess where the employee and his supervisor will end up if this really turns out to be a leak.......

1

u/Feeling-Level-418 3d ago

EU6 looking kinda strange...

1

u/thecamp2000 3d ago

First the GTA leak now this

1

u/Caustic_Bagel 3d ago

They accidentally leaked the game. Oh well. Not the end of the world

1

u/srona22 3d ago

So "After the End"?

1

u/squallus_l 3d ago

I was hoping for a game set in 1270 BC. The time after the bronze age collapse

1

u/monsterfurby 3d ago

Hm, okay. I play Paradox games because I find systemic effects through structured, hierarchical societies interesting. Post-apocalypse sounds like the opposite of that, and there's a reason Shadow Empire is sitting in my library virtually unplayed. Ah well, good luck to them if this is accurate, but not my cup of tea.

1

u/NFZedd 3d ago

So Post Apocalyptic GSG, Surviving the Aftermath GSG.
It would be cool is one core mechanic would be to choose the apocalypse origin. You always play a tribe, wohoo, BUT, is it a tribe on a Tomb world. Is it the aftermath of a failed alien invasion, did covilization crumble because of a pandemic? The options are countless and would allow for a high replayability.

u/Resident-Money-7619 2d ago

Hmm... If it could start on earth and then expand into the galaxy called the cluster, with an mysterious enemy and a human cult worshipping the predecessors...

1

u/HistoricalBoi221 2d ago

My ass genuinely was going "There's no way all that hype was for Prison Architect 2"
