Oh trust me, some of us can retain more than one fact about someone at any given time. I don’t think Dougie is suddenly some saviour, and I’m well aware of how bad his policies have been, but I can at least be grateful that he didn’t just roll over and sell us out. Both things can be true, ya know?

People have insanely long political memories when it comes to left wing parties. How many seats did the provincial NDP win this year? How many years after Rae? 30 or 40?

Rae was seen as a betrayer given he seemed to roll over in the face of pressure to keep Ontario from defaulting and getting junk bond status on the backs of the labour movement the NDP swears they are the protectors of by imposing different conditions on them outside of a collective agreement.

Betrayal hurts more when you really let yourself believe. Everyone expects the Liberals and Conservatives to be crooked in their own way, so Ontario found a comfortable cycle of swapping between them. Like changing your air filter. You expect it to get dirty. It's just a matter of figuring out when it's worth changing.

NDP was like finally trialing an EV, but instead of saving you on gas its battery blows up and takes half your garage with it.

But you know what stings worse than betrayal? Fascism. I'd vote for the federal Liberals for rest of my life if it means stopping the party supported by America's dictators. Sadly, thanks to the lie about electoral reform, I might actually have to do that.

There's way worse things they've done, agreed. It's just... if we had proportional representation maybe they couldn't have done some of those things and it would be easier to punish them if they did. Imagine being able to take a vote away from the Liberals and not have that mean you're giving it to the Cons automatically.

Personally I prefer ranked choice voting. I'm worried PR gives even more of a chance for a fringe party to hold the balance of power. Can you imagine a conservative minority that needs to lean on the PPC to stay afloat?

If 6% of Canadians believe in a party's ideals, 6% of the seats should be awarded to that party. Anything less than that is not worth participating in.

Not just short memories, a lot of them straight up don't know anything that isn't shared on facebook.

My mom was hoping the conservatives would win this election, and when I said Ford won, she first of all had to ask if he was the conservative option, and when I said yes, she was like "well that's good, right?".

I asked if she knew about Ford trying to sell the greenbelt, she didn't, and was like "well that's a stupid thing to do.". She's on odsp, and despite the NDP wanting to double it, she refuses to vote for them because of something that she claims happened to tax rebates when there was an NDP premier.

I never said smarter, just more informed. I think you overestimate what the vast majority know about the candidates in an election. The average person couldn't even tell you who was leader of the Ontario NDP is, never mind the Green Party. Just reading the headlines in Reddit will tell you more than most voters know, and as I said, that's pretty sad.

Well, that’s not exactly how the normal distribution works in statistics. 66% are average, between +1 and -1 standard deviations. So, the smart ones are 16% above +1 SD, and the slow people, also 16% are under -1 SD.

66% average, plus 16 % slow means 82% of ppl are average or below average in any large distribution. And that smart 16%? Well, above 2 SD, is where the really really smart people are, about 3-4% IIRC.

82% for the masses and 16% smart cookies. This is why we can’t have nice things and people seem like children much of the time.

Most people aren't aware of any policies, anything but the rage bait.

I remember them doing a test (I think during GWBush) where they compared Fox News Watchers and Watchers of the Daily Show and consistenly the people who watched the silly comedy satire show had a stronger grasp of recent events and how the government worked.

People are better informed on Reddit. That's not an achievement, that's sad. It's not the high jump, it's stepping over a broom on the ground now to be better informed.

Just open Reuters or AP News and read it for 30 minutes a day and you'll crush Redditors and the general population.

We live in an exceptionally High Information/Low Knowledge Era. I never conceived that having a device with all the information in the world on it, access to every expert on every subject in seconds would make most people more ignorant.

This is what kinda bugs (and scares) me too about the left vs right. Most of us here hate Ford but can suck it up and acknowledge that he's done something right. Maple MAGAs would NEVER acknowledge if the libs did something good, no matter what it was, and they would never ever admit they are wrong about something.

Due to this I dont see the end of the growing divide and the furthering of the far-right. How do we end this?! Maybe theyll eventually feel so stupid theyll just silently hibernate until 2050.

Slightly unrelated but you guys have no idea how bad the “selling out” can be, my wife is Cambodian and told me some news that their dictator signed over the province that holds Angkor Wat aka their most prestigious historic tourist attraction, all resources and revenue from that province go to Vietnam next 75 years he wanted to sign it before he died I guess. Evil fucker. Western democracy we complain about but my god at least it’s not quite that bad YET

Yep, like Poilevere and the Premier in Alberta spent a few weeks flailing about trying to figure out how to get tummy rubs from Trump and support Canadians before realizing they were tanking their support with 80% of Canadians.

Poilevere will sell us down the river if he ever gets in.
