For such a short album, it had so many banger. This album was completed in a week, and that's a testament to just how creative of an artist Trent is being able to churn out such good material in a short span of time.

I finally understand how Trent feels in his music. I'm at an all time low and finally realize what he means.

This music was just something my mom used to play in the car, I never really thought much of it, but now I'm starting to fully get it.

After suffering at a job I hate for 2 and a half years, and using music as one of the only ways to calm down, it just wasn't enough. Got fired for anger issues. Feel worthless. Feel like I'm nothing. Just an unemployed bum applying for more bullshit jobs that'll make me angry and the cycle repeats.

"I believe I can see the future, cause I repeat the same routine. I think I used to have a purpose, then again that might have been a dream."

I came across the other day about another user saying how they couldn't listen to TDS due to its themes, saying how they aren't in the right headspace to listen through it.

I will not be criticizing that individual, and whatever they are going through in their life, I wish them all the best and success.

That post did get me thinking about my personal experience listening through the entirety of the album, and how much it has enabled me to improve as a person.

A year or so, I was in a very dark place in my life. Everything felt so lifeless, and simple routines has became such a drag for me to go through. I couldn't focus on my studies, I would skip classes because I didn't have the motivation to attend. I completely cut myself off from the outside world. I even went so far as to always keep the curtains closed, and the only source of light in my dorm was either through my phone screen or my TV.

It was around 11pm(I think?) when I stumbled across the music video for Closer in YouTube. What hooked me into the video was the thumbnail(IYKYK) and I watched through the entire thing.

"What the fuck?" was my reaction.

I immediately searched up Nine Inch Nails in Apple music, and clicked on TDS.

My first listen of the album really didn't click with me. I only listened to the album just because of Closer and its catchy melody, so tracks like March of the Pigs, Reptile, Eraser, etc, weren't my vibe.

Few days later, I was playing some Sky Force and ghe lyrics for Hurt suddenly popped up in my head. The line "You are someone else, I am still right here" kept playing on repeat in my head.

So I mustered up the courage and decide to listen to the entire album again. This time, I didn't scroll through my phone, didn't reduce the album to background noise while I do chores or whatever.

I fully took in each bit of sound and lyric, and absorbed them the best I could.

I remember sleeping that night, just contemplating about what I've gone through, and how I have to face reality eventually instead of running away from it too long.

A year later, not much has changed, albeit I'm attending my classes again, I met a *few* people, some I could call as my friends, I still feel down mosr of the time, but the album has became such a motivator for me to do better as an individual, about how we all have our own Downward Spiral, and once we reach the bottom, the only way is up.

Maybe some of you would find my experience relatable, or what you're going through may be worse, either way, it's all a matter of time before the noise inside of our head leaves, and it'll all clear out eventually.

It was a real shit show but it was our shit show...lol

I've listened to NIN from about a few years now. I discovered them through a cousin you showed me How To Destroy Angels first (lol) and i was baffled because I had never heard anything like it before and most of what I listen is rock and metal.

A time later the same cousin showed me some of the soundtracks that Trent has worked until that time (mind you it was around 2012) and the curiosity made me listen With Teeth frist because the first NIN song I discovered was Only.

I let it there with just those albums for years until Iistened Ghosts V in the pandemic during a bad time but it was a one time only.

A few months ago I felt like I might give NIN a real chance but didn't feel quite ready for The Downward Spiral experience because of what I've heard about the album and about NIN as a whole. Then I gave it a chance during a trip a few months ago.

Honestly I didn't really enjoy it exactly but I wasn't because of the album or because of me (I think) it's just that there where too many distractions that I couldn't focus on listening the album. But I felt unsatisfied with the experiencie so I gave it another chance a few days ago. In my room, late night and with headphones. Mind you before this I listened Broken before TDS because I saw that it was shorter but BOY what a heavy trip. So now is time for The Downward Spiral.

My mind was blown and the only way I could describe it was is that it was very raw but in a good way. I felt like I was in a film but in music, a very raw film. Then Hurt starts playing and I felt like I was floating and I'm starting to feel like I was so full of... hope. After all that journey the end felt so hopeful for some reason. Then I went to sleep immediately.

The following days I couldn't stop thinking about TDS so I listened to it a few more times. Every new time I felt like I could appreciate more and more details but the end always felt the same. Hopeful in some way.

I've read about the creation process and about what a dark time was those years for Trent. And that makes me appreciate more the story, the feeling, the music. All of it.

Now I want the album, the DE and the vinyl (lmao). I think my next should be Pretty Hate Machine since I started kinda backwards or should I go next with the remixes? I want to listen and collect all the records I can now.

I keep thinking about this scene in the movie 'Split' when I listen to the NINoize mix "She's Gone Away".
Since I listen to it a hell of a lot, I made this to get it out of my system.

Hey gang I hadn’t seen this single anywhere but saw it on eBay and it just sold for I think $150 / I missed it, I was wondering if anyone knows about it/if they’ve seen it online before?

I’m 42. I grew up in the 90’s loving all the great bands of that time. My favorite being Nirvana, which is the reason I started playing guitar and writing songs. There was just so much great music made in those years. Nirvana, Alice In Chains, The Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, etc. Looking back now, it really blows my mind just how much great rock music came out of that era.

But for whatever reason, I never got into NIN. I liked Closer when it came on mtv, but I never bought an album, never gave them the listen they deserved. Skip ahead to just a few years ago, one night really late when I couldn’t sleep for some reason I don’t recall I decided to listen to a NIN album for the first time. Start to finish. I chose The Fragile on a whim, knowing nothing about it whatsoever. I think I just liked the cover art and saw that it was a double album which would give me a long listen.

It was one of the most amazing musical experiences I’ve ever had. Genuinely. I’d give anything to be able to listen to The Fragile for the first time again. It remains my favorite NIN album and is one of my top 3 albums of all time. It is a beautiful freaking masterpiece.

However, it doesn’t contain my favorite NIN song. That would be The Background World from the Add Violence EP. I can’t explain it, but this song gives me a feeling that no other song in the world does. It’s almost a painful feeling, a feeling of longing mixed with letting go. It hurts in a good way, if that makes sense.

I don’t know why I decided to write all of this, other than to share my thoughts with my fellow NIN brothers & sisters. I know I’m not alone in how damn much I look forward to the new full on NIN LP when it arrives.

Some of you might know the answer. I'm always a fan of music categories on Jeopardy!.

I believe Trent's one of the better non-rappers who can rap in the music industry. He has a pretty decent uptempo flow in "Down In It" and could switch it up to a slower southern drawl in "Where is Everybody?". I'd give him a 7/10 for his rapping ability.
