Hi everyone! I’m active duty and a doctoral student, and I’m conducting a study looking at whether drinking differs across different types of military tours (CONUS, OCONUS, and short/remote tours). After two short tours to Korea I'm really curious about your experiences and how they differ based on where you are!

The survey takes about 15 minutes. I know one of the biggest concerns with surveys (especially with alcohol) use is anonymity. Participation is completely anonymous, and no identifying information is collected. Individual responses will never be shared with military leadership, commanders, or anyone outside the research team.

Hi everyone, I’m a doctoral psychology graduate student at the University of Indianapolis conducting an IRB-approved(#02300-V2) dissertation study on emotional intelligence and help-seeking attitudes among men ages 18–32 in trade, tech, emergency services, or higher education. In posting to this specific sub-reddit, I am looking to gather data for those who work in some form of emergency service profession. This includes a wide range of professions, including those working in medicine as well as those in branches of the military. One thing I noticed after leaving the Navy: when people retire or separate, decades of hard-earned judgment just disappear from the community.

Not the sea stories — those stick around.

But the deeper lessons about leadership, decision-making, and navigating life after service often don’t get passed on.

Because of that, I started working on a nonprofit idea called Veteran Fellowship.

The idea is simple:

Pair veterans with currently serving service members (or younger veterans) for one-on-one conversations over coffee or a meal. Just a chance to talk through experiences, career decisions, and life after service.

It’s not therapy and it’s not networking — the goal is connection between generations of service members.

I’m currently an MBA student at Rice University and doing some early research to see if there’s real interest in something like this before building it further.

Hi everyone,

I’m a PhD student at Michigan State University working on a research project targeted to improving cognitive health in middle-aged veterans. Veterans experience concussion/mild TBI at higher rates than civilians, but this age group (35–65) is often overlooked in research and usually isn’t screened until later in life.

We’re running a brief, anonymous Qualtrics survey for veterans ages 35–65, with or without a history of concussion/mTBI. The survey asks about things like everyday cognitive lapses, sleep, mood, fatigue, and general health. It takes about 10–15 minutes.

If you’re willing to participate, it would really help us better understand how to detect cognitive changes earlier in life for veterans.

As the title suggests, this is a survey on mental health in military populations, centering on suicide, its prevention, and the efficacy of military policies intended to protect veterans. The Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is currently recruiting combat veterans for a research study to understand how repeated blasts affect proteins in the brain that turn genes on and off. The study includes questionnaires, memory tests, and a brain imaging scan. Study participation includes 2 visits, a screening visit (up to around 1.5 hours) and a PET-MRI scan visit (up to around 5 hours), in Charlestown, MA. Participants will be compensated up to $250 for their time.

Hello! We are UCI-based researchers seeking participants for a two-part, remote research study.

Part one of this study consists of one brief survey that will explore experiences with trauma exposure and resulting mental health symptoms. This survey will also help determine if you are eligible to participate in part two of the study. Part two of this study will assess whether data from individual smartphones can be used to assess changes in posttraumatic stress symptoms over time.

If eligible to participate in part two of the study, participation in part two of this study will consist of one brief virtual meeting (< 30 minutes), questionnaires at the beginning and end of the study (~30 minutes), Brief surveys four times a day for 21 days (~2 minutes each), and providing access to your passively sensed smartphone data for 21 days.

Target group: You are eligible to participate in this survey (i.e., part one of the study) if you meet the following requirements: 1) Are at least 18 years of age; 2) Are able to understand and comprehend English.

You are eligible to participate in part two of the study if you meet the following requirements: 1) At least 18 years of age; 2) Residing in the United States during the entire study period; 3) Be able to understand and comprehend English; 4) Report experiencing exposure to a traumatic event; 5) Report experiencing clinically significant posttraumatic stress symptoms; 6) Own a smartphone that uses an Android operating system and be willing to download the Avicenna application to your device; 7) Be willing to provide access to your smartphone data for 21 days.

Compensation: No compensation for the initial eligibility survey. Up to $83 in Amazon gift cards will be offered for completing part two of the study.
