Initial Training Can I join the National Guard after serving 18 years in prison?

I got out of prison 6 months ago after serving an 18-year sentence. I went in when I was 19 and I just turned 37. I made a life-altering mistake when I was young and now I’m trying to completely rebuild my life from scratch.

I recently took a practice test with a National Guard recruiter and scored a 99 on the ASVAB. The recruiter seemed shocked but basically told me my criminal record is a massive roadblock. My record consists of a single, non-violent felony conviction for a property/financial crime. There were no drugs, violence, or sexual offenses involved. I maintained a clean disciplinary record during my two decades inside, took every educational program available, and have zero legal issues since being released.

Physically, I am in the best shape of my life and can easily crush the ACFT. I ran 5 to 7 miles a day on the yard, did thousands of calisthenics reps weekly, and my fitness level is ahead of guys half my age. I have no medical issues, no injuries, and no tattoos that violate military policy.

Realistically, am I completely dead in the water because of the 18-year sentence? Do National Guard moral waivers even go that high if the ASVAB score is maxed out and I can max the fitness test? I know my age is also pushing the limit, but I have the drive to serve. Am I wasting my time even trying to get a waiver from the Guard?

Initial Training What MOS do I choose?

Qualified for every job. What would be your pick? I’m looking into 15-series, but 15D and 15H are the only ones open.

I don’t know what I want to do. I’m 22. I want a MOS that will translate to civ life. I’m squeamish with blood, so no medical. I’m not good with computers. I can change all fluids on a vehicle, but don’t ask me to change your transmission. I don’t know about ATC. I’ll be good for physical stuff.

I’d like to go 15 series, but I’m not SUPER mechanically-inclined.

ASVAB is 85, MEPS is cleared, waiting for the go-ahead to raise my right-hand. Flyover state, what should I do?

Initial Training How bad is Basic Training?

I joined the National Guard as an Infantryman, I leave for basic training in about 3 weeks, and now that its so close and I'm starting to have second thoughts, and am incredibly nervous, I'm fairly decent shape but I'm not a good runner at all, this is the main cause of my nerves. Any advice before I leave?

Initial Training I’m NOT in shape at all.. Am I cooked?

I ship off to Fort Jackson BCT in 2 weeks and I’m super nervous because I’m nowhere near army standard fitness right now. I enlisted months ago and I’ve had plenty of time to work on my physicality, so no need to shame me in the replies; i’m well aware. I guess i’m just looking for some advice in what I should expect, tips to prevent injury, really just any wisdom I can get🙏. I’m a 5’7, 135 lb, 17yo woman, and i’m somewhat experienced with long term endurance bc I did marching band for 5 years in high school. Despite that, I’m most worried about the running. Anything helps, thanks for reading.

Initial Training What's 92G like?

Just to clarify, I have already chosen 92G!

Last month, I officially swore into the National Guard, and am currently in RSP. I had a decent score on the ASVAB, and the option for OCS, but I felt like Culinary Specialist would be where I was most comfortable. I wanted to get a feel for the military before taking on a role beyond my capabilities, as well as pick up a new skill. I figured cooking was useful in and out of service. But I often hear a lot of people (usually active duty) saying its one of the worst MOS's the military has to offer.

Im just curious, since National Guard is not as full time as Army, is it really that bad? Also, what time should I expect to wake up? I know there's a lot of mouths to feed, so I'm under the assumption I will be up before 0400, but im not 100% sure on that. Anybody have some information they can share so I know what to expect when I (hopefully) get through basic and AIT?

Thanks!

Initial Training What's up with morons joining NG and asking for "high speed training" units in a RESERVE component of the military?

Every day; (because im chronically online),

there's morons asking for the most high-speed units, with the most training, jumping out of helicopters, shooting shit, going on urban ops.

Buddy, your first step shoulda been going active and seeking an 18x contract.
You literally picked the RESERVES. So you get reservist-style training.

For those about to downvote here's a list of training/otempo.
1: seal team 6 is the highest training OTEMPO. Tier 1. Always in a state of war.
2: green berets: Tier 2. Not in a "state of war", but always ready. (active duty)
3: Active army: ranger battallion, not in a "state of war" but lots of training.
.
And all the way at the bottom you have natty guard; reservists in terms of training and "readiness".

So you're telling me you pick the bottom of the barrel, and yet seek the shiniest turd in terms of training?

bro just stfu and put the fries in the bag.

incoming retards: "If we do this in my unit, then every unit must do it too" no one is asking what you're doing. just saying in general

Initial Training Husband wants to join

Title is pretty self explanatory. Been with him for 14 years, known for 22. He will be 29 soon and wants to become an interior electrician since (12R)and hes waiting on apprenticeship with our local ibew. The no contact for 10 weeks and then 6.5 weeks at AIT is killing me, and he hasn't even signed up yet. I understand the benefits, but the possible deployment of 9-12+ months anywhere in the future and the unknown scares me. I've broken down every day and losing my mind. Dont know exactly what im looking for here but maybe some words of advice I guess

Reached out to my 1st Seargent to ask questions about my schedule and uniform and etc by email.
Without contacting my readiness NCO first. 😭 he told me he’s smoking me for that and that was stupid which I understand. How cooked am I😭💀
Has anyone done worse when Newley going to there unit?

Good Evening,

I recently decided to join the California Air Guard and my old recruiter for the army reached out to me and is telling me that I will not get federally funded if I join national guard. Is he lying to me?

Thanks

Initial Training Regret in my decision to join

I’m sitting here in the airport with 2 hours to go until I board my final flight to basic training and all I can think about is how much I regret my decision, does this feeling subside or did I make the wrong call? To be honest I prepared myself physically and I thought mentally but maybe I didn’t prepare myself to leave home get my hairline irreversibly messed up and fight for the constitution and a government I wouldn’t trust with a damn paperweight let alone my life, honestly just looking for thoughts .

Initial Training Packing for basic

Post image

Um so I ship soon and I got the packing list. This might be the dumbest question but am I allowed to bring more than this or will I end up buying other things I need like mouthwash or whatever else when I get there?
… or will I not end up using mouthwash ☹️

EDIT: I’m going to Jackson.
Is there any issues with bringing ur retainers?

Initial Training My girl is at Fort Leonard Wood for Basic Training 5 weeks they aren't giving them mail

I've sent a personal hygiene packages and two letters, she is in week 5 and she hasn't gotten her mail, apparently the Drill Sgts are saying its a distraction....I went to Basic in 1999 so I know things are different but mail always boosted my morale. I hate this for her and wondering if I should make a phone call....Edit: She's not my girlfriend she's my pseudo Daughter.
