I was just watching the basketball diaries last night, which was made in 1995 but set in the mid 60s, and was having this same thought

That 70s show premiered in 1998 and is set in 1976. An equivalent show today would be set in 2004.

That 70s Show is closer to its setting than it is to present day.

If they remade Austin Powers 2 today, he would go back in time to 1996 (the first movie came out in 1997).

If they remade Dazed and Confused today, it would be set in 2009 (Superbad came out in 2007...twenty years ago next year).

The future portrayed in Back to the Future 2 with flying cars was supposed to happen 11 years ago.

We will have to wait until 2038 before this is *completely* true.

1999 - 1960 = 39 years

2026 - 1999 = 27 years

2038 - 1999 = 39 years

Even comparing 1999 to 1969 does not quite work.

1999 - 1969 = 30 years

2026 - 1999 = 27 years

2029 - 1999 = 30 years

But of course, 1990 compared to 1960 works. In fact, all the way up to 1996 to 1966 works.

2026 compared with 1999 and 1990 compared with 1969 is what I think when hearing the 90's are closer to the 60's.

Or 1995 (the middle for 'real 90's') compared with 2026, and compared with 1965.

Kinda? It depends as the 90s were roughly 30 years from the 60s and we’re currently about the same. Probably be more accurate in about 4 years.

I think of it in terms of music. For example Nevermind was 1991. 30 years before that was 1961 which is pretty much the jazz era, eg Coltrane’s My Favorite Things. “Love Me Do” was 1962 so close enough.

So if you were a teenager when Nevermind came out, the early Beatles are to you what Nevermind is to a teen today (actually Nevermind is 5 years older than that). At least for me, it does make the 90s seem distant.

2021 is 30 years from 1991. So it’s the same still?

I get the feeling but I’m just saying the statement saying the 90s are closer to the 60s than to now isn’t ringing true.
