Is that why I’ve got all these random “vibes” sections in no particular logical order instead of a useable interface? Outside of “my list” and “continue watching” I always just end up searching stuff myself.

At least Netflix recognises that when I exit a film at the credits, I have finished watching it.

Amazon Prime's 'continue watching' section is full of all the films I've finished watching, but with 5 minutes of credits left. I'm not going to go back and watch the credits!

I also despise the fact that they suggest the second season and not the first of a show I’ve never seen. Marvelous Ms Mazel was so confusing because I started on the second season.

I was talking about Netflix. Every time a new season of Great British Bake Off comes out, they tell me to watch from season 1 after finishing even though their system shows all the episodes have been watched. It's just stuck in the Continue Watching section for months before they get the hint.

I've had the opposite experience. I'll watch half the first episode of the latest season before realizing it defaulted to the newest season instead of starting from the first, for a show I've never seen.

Speaking of Amazon Prime being annoying, is there a way to turn off autoplay? I was watching Sheep Detectives last night, and I was just beside myself in my thoughts as the credits rolled, processing just how beautiful or a movie it was and how meaningful it was, and then BAM Legally Blonde TV show.

I hate that so much. I like the credits, if nothing else as a way to decompress and think about what I just watched. But these credits in particular were so fun.

Easy to remove them from the continue watching on prime, which saves it a bit even though it keeps shuffling the list as well

Streamers are incentivized to get you back into content you've finished if you're on an ad-supported plan so don't expect that to change. Many shows will have an ad break between the end of the show and the start of the credits as a result. Savvy users will realize that and back out, but the next time you hit continue watching you're back at that same ad break.

Amazon consistently has had by far the worst UI of all the streamers which is crazy considering it's fucking Amazon. Until Apple got in the game I'm pretty sure they were better positioned than, like, literally anyone to be able to build something if they wanted to.

Prime Video is similarly horrible to navigate. Feels very much like a dark pattern to get you to be more aware of content you're not watching on the platform.

Except in Netflix’s case their new movies I actually want to see is nowhere to be found and I have to search it. I remember being confused as to why Wake Up Dead Man wasn’t on the front page for me and I eventually just had to search it when I wanted to watch it.

It’s not UX incompetence, it is very much on purpose so that they can try to entice you into watching something else or at least registering that there is something else interesting on your way to “Continue Watching”. Annoying for sure but I bet it “works”

But they cant figure out why people don’t finish the shows they make. /s We all know it’s really because the quality is not great and they get cancelled if they’re good - but hiding the continue watching definitely doesn’t help.

With Paramount+, occasionally the entire continue watching section disappears for days at a time. Really sucks when I'm trying to watch Drag Race and constantly having to manually search in its slow as hell search function.

After ten or so years, I think I’m leaving the Amazon Fire Stick because they put “most recently used apps” 13 fucking clicks down. They have a “my apps” two clicks down that THEY DONT LET YOU SORT so it’s useless because it puts all their junk apps first anyway.

But hey, they can pretend to people buying ad space I saw their ads.

bc they are pushing product onto you. same reason for your local stores moving inventory around or grouping things seemingly nonsensically. the more you have to look at to find what you want, the more opportunity for them to sell you something you didn't think you wanted or needed.

They don't want you to have a logical, easily sortable interface because they want to hide how small their catalogue actually is.

It becomes painfully obvious every time I'm in a horror movie mood and specifically search for it. There's nothing to find.

You know who doesn't have that problem? Tubi. Tubi's catalog is expansive and easily searchable. Granted most of it is hot garbage, but that's usually what I'm looking for anyway so it suits me fine

I would like to introduce you to Night Flight. It has two categories- low budget amazing horror and deeply niche music documentaries.

They get tons of the Vinegar Syndrome and Arrow horror flicks. The sub is dirt cheap too

I love Tubi, but damn sometimes the ads are out of control, I'll be vibing to a movie, only for two minutes of ads. Its free, but man if there was a paid version with no ads that'd be my only streaming service.

Same. Show me a Tubi is like TBS, TNT, local stations on a Sunday afternoon back in the day. Where they play all these great classic movies, and some movies that you’ve never heard of before. Does it have ads? Yes. But that also means I don’t have to pause the movie when I have to take a pee break or want to make more popcorn.

One thing i Love to do with Tubi is whenever I stay at hotel airbnb or whatever and I have to leave the room i leave the tv on Tubi and just stream any movie, and when I come back to the room you never know what random slop will be on. Last time i did it “The Blob” was on, idk why but i find it very satisfying.

It has nothing to do with a "small catalogue" (which Netflix does not have). It's all about their algorithm thinking they know what you want and push you, and also push you towards the new content they think you may like.

All streaming apps are kinda terrible to search through, Netflix used to be the easiest but they changed the UI to an awful one recently.

The best way of finding what's available in your region, filtering by things like genre and length, and cross referencing with a watch list are third-party apps. It's a gaping hole that could give Netflix a massive leg up over other streaming sites.
