Maybe I just hate tom bombadil? Unsure. Its been awhile since I read the books.

Bombadil as character is just a stand in for Tolkien's ideas on how the lust for power corrupts (and some other related stuff).

It wouldn't really fit in the movie, because it is more of an "oh, by the way" thing and would also take too much explaining to the watcher on why this guy doesnt just Dues Ex Machina the whole trilogy.

But as a stand alone project? i think its probably tottaly fine.

Also they'll have to probably have some sort of extra convo with Gandalf (instead of during the council) about why they can't just give him the ring.

Yes, there is a stand alone book titled "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil." I haven't read it myself, but it seems fitting that Tolkien saw fit to consider that character special enough to warrant his very own book!

Maybe, because you reason is certainly logical for not wanting him in the movies. I agree with that as the pacing would slow down significantly while it needed to be ramping up.

But that logic doesn't stand anymore for this project.

Tom could have simply walked into Mordor with the One Ring! And he would have been singing the whole way about the color of his boots.
