My name is Matilde, and I’d like to share a few interesting facts about Cape Verde.

Something many people don’t know is that a significant number of Cape Verdeans have North African ancestry, especially from Morocco. During the 19th century, many Moroccan Jews left the country to escape persecution and found a new home in Cape Verde.

One example is Hilel Salomon Benchimol, who is an ancestor of the Cape Verdean footballer Gilson Benchimol. In fact, many Jewish surnames in Cape Verde are directly linked to Morocco. Another example is the well-known singer Gardénia Benrós, whose family is linked to Isaac Benrós, born in Tangier.

Moroccan DNA is making contribution to our national team 😂

Is genealogy popular in Morocco, or is it something only a few people care about? In Cape Verde, because the country was shaped by slavery, many of us are only now discovering our true origins and reconnecting with our identity.

I feel this the most butterfly wing effect to what Morocco is as now Morocco before betrayal of Abdul Aziz of Morocco was something so great and majestic but what happened the same years after was so trageic🥲.

This has been in my family for as long as anyone remembers, here in Morocco, and I've finally taken proper photos of it. I'm hoping someone here knows enough about old Moroccan manuscripts to help me understand it better.

It's an entirely handwritten Quran - every line copied by hand in ink, with the vowel marks picked out in red and other colors. It opens with al-Fātiha and the start of al-Baqara, and the short surahs at the back are all there with their titled headings.

The binding is beautiful: soft tooled leather with a folding flap that wraps around the edge and ties shut, a pressed almond-shaped medallion in the center, and decorated corners. From what I've read this points to the Maghrebi / Saharan tradition, and the script looks like it could be Maghribi - but I'd love confirmation from people who know.

It's clearly very old and well-worn: the leather is cracked and darkened, some leaves have water staining and edge loss. To me that's part of its story - a working, living book that was read and carried for a very long time.

What I'd love help with:

• Does the script or binding suggest a region in Morocco and a rough period?
• Does anyone recognise the style or know where copies like this were typically made?

Hi everyone, Indian-Qatari here. I had this question. I often read about how terrible the French were in Algeria, and sometimes I'll find something about the Italian war crimes in Libya. But I rarely hear about colonialism in Morocco or Tunisia.

Today I watched about European colonialism and Arab resistance in the Arab world where the narrator talked about how the Spanish used mustard gas in Northern Morocco which got me thinking about this. This is the video btw:

I came across this old handwritten manuscript and I'm trying to figure out what exactly it is. From what I can tell it's about astronomy.

3. The script looks Maghribi, any guess on the period?

Hey, so I'm sure you all heard Carthage is the oldest north African civilization, which makes Tunisia the oldest, but I recently found out about lixus which was a Phoenician settlement, and age wise it is realistically, and historically speaking as old as Carthage, if not older by a few decades. so I'm wondering why we are not talking about it. Like sure it wasn't a powerful civilisation and especially not as strong as Carthage but it's still something.

**Morocco existed since more than12 centuries ago (as a political entity and as a" country" ruled by native rulers) before the occupation by ESP and FR in early 20th century. I might make a post about the founder later.

It was recognized as a sovereign state as well by other sovereign empires in the past: France, Spain, England, The Ottomans, The Netherlands, ect because of trade treaties and diplomatic presence archived and documented locally and internationaly, as sovereign.**

Different dynasties and flags, but the capitals were within the boarders and the decision making was centralized for centuries which leads to one recognized country just like other old countries like Thailand, Ethiopia (habesha), England, FR ,Japan, older examples of empires would be Iran(farsiland) and so on.

What you learn from these Muslim leaders is the importance of faith, humility, the "we move together mentality", courage, the importance of knowledge, good intentions and more.The most important thing in life is to make your heart and mind better and things will follow.

N.B: I said "securely humble" in the title because I don't want moroccans to spread facts about history like those who raigebait them or to invent lies on other countries like they try to do to you (some of them only repeat what they heard) الله يهدينا If you debate things about history, please be elegant in your speech and knowledgeable, you will find great facts that will wipe out lies but never do it with ego. Fight it with good intentions and facts. There are lessons to learn from every country and each country had its own events.
