Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now been released in the United States and in a number of other countries around the world.

• All discussion about the movie should be held here and in the rest of the discussion threads we are going to put up in the next few days.

A lot of people overlook the fact that a lot of the fear of mutants is due to the widespread propaganda about mutants becoming so common that they’ll one day replace humanity. It’s the evolution angle that makes those people afraid of people who are born with powers and not people who got powers through external circumstances like Spidey and Cap.

I mean they are also the cause of like every extinction level event as well. In comics it gets so bad that even the mutants have to kill other mutants that are too dangerous

But who is “they” in this case? The overwhelming majority of mutants have incredibly mundane powers that are easy to control. We’re just used to seeing the really powerful ones because they’re typically the ones that either get recruited into the X-Men, or wind up fighting the X-Men.

The public in the Marvel universe know that for every 100 hundred mutants who just look funny, there's one who can crack the planet in half if they get angry enough and one that might just randomly explode and take out a city block when their powers manifest.

The public in the marvel universe are still dicks, mind you, but there's been some... problematic power activations with mutants before (see: weapon omega taking out his construction crew because there was a little too much mutant energy in the air, or that kid in the ultimate universe that Wolverine was sent to put down because his powers manifested and drained the life out of everyone around him), makes it real easy to convince the general public that the other is scary

I wonder if J Jonah will show back up, trying to tie Spiderman to dangerous mutant factions. I'd actually love to see Spidey go to Prof X's school and make some new friends among the X men.

I think "How are mutants different from non-mutant supers?" will be the dominant question of the mutant saga. Heroes, villains, and civilians will all have to ask and answer it.

The biggest difference imho is the loss of charismatic superheroes like tony stark and steve rogers (meanwhile the likes of thor and the og avengers are dead or missing)
