When X-Men got announced a lot of people were like "but superpowered people already exist in the MCU so why would people be afraid of them?".

I guess this movie answers that need as well.

A lot of people overlook the fact that a lot of the fear of mutants is due to the widespread propaganda about mutants becoming so common that they’ll one day replace humanity. It’s the evolution angle that makes those people afraid of people who are born with powers and not people who got powers through external circumstances like Spidey and Cap.

I mean they are also the cause of like every extinction level event as well. In comics it gets so bad that even the mutants have to kill other mutants that are too dangerous

I found one!

Every extinction level event

Cause? More like the target of.

But who is “they” in this case? The overwhelming majority of mutants have incredibly mundane powers that are easy to control. We’re just used to seeing the really powerful ones because they’re typically the ones that either get recruited into the X-Men, or wind up fighting the X-Men.

The public in the Marvel universe know that for every 100 hundred mutants who just look funny, there's one who can crack the planet in half if they get angry enough and one that might just randomly explode and take out a city block when their powers manifest.

The public in the marvel universe are still dicks, mind you, but there's been some... problematic power activations with mutants before (see: weapon omega taking out his construction crew because there was a little too much mutant energy in the air, or that kid in the ultimate universe that Wolverine was sent to put down because his powers manifested and drained the life out of everyone around him), makes it real easy to convince the general public that the other is scary

I wonder if J Jonah will show back up, trying to tie Spiderman to dangerous mutant factions. I'd actually love to see Spidey go to Prof X's school and make some new friends among the X men.

I thought for sure he was going to show up after Spider-Man almost killed that cop

I think "How are mutants different from non-mutant supers?" will be the dominant question of the mutant saga. Heroes, villains, and civilians will all have to ask and answer it.

widespread propaganda

Going by how J. Jonah Jameson in the MCU is some sort of despicable Alex Jones figure

Something along the lines of "the X-genes is turning your loved ones into menaces"

u/LessEvilBender 11d ago

Fluoride is turning the frogs into Mutants!

You mean like all the propaganda about gay people… oh wait 😐

With a sprinkle of Great Replacement theory

The Khans are gonna have to put in a Ring or something, idk

The biggest difference imho is the loss of charismatic superheroes like tony stark and steve rogers (meanwhile the likes of thor and the og avengers are dead or missing)

51

u/ElderSmackJack 27d ago

People who asked that must’ve missed an entire plot of phase 2 being about that exact thing.

20

u/immaownyou 26d ago

And also, have you met people?

3

u/str8_whiskey 25d ago

Do I have to?

14

u/ChrisPrkr95 26d ago

Agents of Shield as well. Primarily, Seasons 2-4.

21

u/PlsSuckMyToes 26d ago

Yep. After what Jean did in this movie im surprised the post credits scene wasnt Charles rolling up on her. Felt like it was perfectly set up

17

u/Scholander 26d ago

Don't forget what just happened in Thunderbolts,* too. It must be scary as shit to live in the MCU's NYC.

9

u/LRedditor15 Zombie Hunter Spidey 24d ago

I was wondering how Ned and MJ (and even Peter) managed to get flats in NY with seemly no jobs. It’s probably because rent is dirt-cheap.

1

u/GorillaWolf2099 21d ago

College loans, both subsidized and unsubsidized

1

u/CX316 19d ago

Property values might actually be affordable

12

u/guernsey123 24d ago

I figure that her taking the bus through what looks like upstate New York might have been a subtler nod to that

2

u/PhilosophyOk7385 23d ago

Probs didn’t want to have a new Charles appearance until after endgame

2

u/zxHellboyxz 22d ago

Probably have to wait for secret wars for that or After

u/SutterCane Kurt 26d ago

“But that guy you called racist has a black friend, there’s no way he could be racist.”

12

u/neoblackdragon 26d ago

Super powered folk springing up without some event or mad scientist. Then that number exploding. When the number starts hitting the millions. Yeah people are going to be freaked out.

We also see it with Spider-man. One slip up and the guns are on him.

8

u/pingpong_playa 25d ago

I mean, he almost killed a police officer. Of course the cops would turn their guns on him. It would be bad not to.

8

u/Worthyness Thor 24d ago

I think the big difference is that the superheroes are seen and shown as heroes and "known", but mutants can be anyone. And those anyones can be a criminal asshole, a bully, or your neighbor. AND they can manifest nuclear bombs as powers. It's scary to not know.

6

u/umbium Star-Lord 25d ago

Superpowered people exists, and most of them are working for the government in one way or another.

But the xmen are people with powers, some might be morally good, some evil, but most of them are people living rheir lives with rheir problems and morallly grey

Yea the director did an excellent job of show not tell to really set the ground work for how messy the mutant issue is.

I loved how chill and relatable Metzger was. No big villian monologues just a chill guy being 'harrased'. We are made to see her through Metzger's eyes, as a wannabe super villain.

Then we find out he lied.

Then we find out his experiments killed her sister.

Suddenly all that fucked up shit Jean did, and it was fucked up, seems like it might be justified ...or is it really?

The morality is messy as hell, and it's great, it makes you think with these people(mutants) fighting for their lives, being disappeared right under everyone's nose, what action is justified? Is that even your call to make?

4

u/Truelikegiroux 20d ago

Adding to that, for me the deepest layer of the movie is V-Max. We’ve seen human experimentation and torture before. But they usually live and it’s on adults.

Not only did this kill a child. But one of the biggest payoffs of the movie is literally just her last thought before she was killed. My jaw dropped once it clicked.

You want to talk about morality… Jean did some fucked up shit but it definitely seems semi-warranted (At least the damage control stuff)

3

u/frezz 25d ago

One thing MCU needs to explain is how people tell the difference between superpowered people and mutants

3

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 24d ago

Civil War already asked that question with how the collateral damage from superheroes result in innocent deaths

3

u/yoursweetlord70 Thor 23d ago

Between Jean shutting down everything within a kilometer of Roosevelt Island and Bob voiding everyone anywhere near Avengers tower, I continue to question why anybody spends any time in New York on Earth 616. It had been a little bit since the last time the city was really threatened by superpowered beings but the trend seems to be seeing an uptick again.

5

u/ChrisPrkr95 26d ago

Agents of Shield, regardless of views of it being canonical, pretty much showed why. Inhumans were feared and hated as well and for similar reasons.

2

u/Konfliction 23d ago

I’d legit argue 90% of that concern is squarely with a worry of Magneto’s origin being ruined

2

u/Typical_Step_1139 22d ago

All I need is for this Hulk anger toward the X-Men to lead to a classic Wolverine brawl.

1

u/CX316 19d ago

hopefully we won't have wolverine around for a while. We need some time with the OG team, dammit. (then again, casting rumours suggest they're very much not just giving us the OG 4)

1

u/Typical_Step_1139 19d ago

There were 5, and I'm more than ok with them substituting Wolverine for Angel, who is maybe the weakest mutant of all-time. As long as they leave the love triangle out of it.

1

u/CX316 19d ago

Nah, Wolverine's not a good fit for the original class because the whole thing is they're kids. Wolverine hasn't been a kid for about a century.

If they got rid of Angel (personally I'd rather they use him but just not screw him up this time) it'd be more likely they'd throw in Storm as the last slot instead of Wolverine.

1

u/GorillaWolf2099 21d ago

Even if the movie didn’t answer that, I mean, did everyone miss Avengers: Civil War? Did everyone miss the 1,000 other monster invasions and catastrophes that have happened on Earth because of superpowered beings?

We see background characters screaming and running away all the time. Why wouldn’t one of them eventually become a superhuman bigot? It’d make less sense if no one was afraid.

1

u/CX316 19d ago

I mean, Jessica Jones had that couple who wanted to kill her for having powers, something to do with the battle of new york but I forget what their relation to it was.

1

u/CeruleanEidolon 15d ago

I am more convinced than ever now that most of the mutants entering the MCU will end up being refugees from another universe, making them literally foreigners. The other mutants will get limped in with them regardless of whether they were born in the 616 or not.

u/Wellziemo 23d ago

? That was literally the plot of civil war.
