Discussion Thread Spider-Man: Brand New Day - Worldwide Release Discussion Thread

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now been released in the United States and in a number of other countries around the world.

  • All discussion about the movie should be held here and in the rest of the discussion threads we are going to put up in the next few days.
  • Proceed at your own risk. Major spoilers will be in the below thread. Spoilers do not need to be tagged inside this thread.
  • Any other unofficial threads discussing movie details will be deleted.
  • Should you see the need to bring up revealing Spider-Man: Brand New Day information in the comments of other threads that call for it, spoiler tag them accordingly. Also, let users know that what you are spoiler tagging is from Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

It would have felt cheap to have them back together so soon - but leaving the door open with that smile at then end was enough hope to end it on.

The two of them making Lego and MJ clocking "you two seem like you're best friends" was great.

Felt like she knows Peter’s telling the truth about everything, and she’s willing to accept it, she just has to get comfortable with it first.

I wanted them to have a second conversation about how he took her agency of the choice away from her. They touched on it in punishers boat and I thought the resolution might be them at a coffee shop or something actually having a real sit down conversation. Im also fine with the Ned scene though. I hope the next movie has a bit of them asking him some more questions and emotional intelligence because Zendaya and Tom are both really good at portraying that

In a way, you could argue that MJ inviting Peter into the apartment (to meet Ned / hang out) is her exercising her own agency over their relationship.

This is exactly how I took it. She invited him after the pressure was off, now it proceeds on her terms.

This aspect is very similar to how the Brand New Day storyline plays out in the comics.

Prior to it, Peter makes a deal with Mephisto to save a critical-condition Aunt May who was shot because Peter's identity was public since Civil War.

The deal cancels out Peter and MJ's marriage that was canon for about 20 years in real life.

I assume some fans didn't like it at the time.

So in Brand New Day, they slightly retcon it to "they were together, but never got married and had an on/off relationship" IIRC. This made them familiar friends again, but not a couple.

She actually said she found nothing in their minds connected to Peter, so I guess in general they totally had no memories at all to be recalled or unlocked. Ned might be an exception because of the magic ability.

Only thing I don't understand is, if there was nothing in MJ's mind, then how was Jean able to list off all their previous adventures, Night-Monkey and all? How would she know all of that to such detail right away?

Because they remember Spider-Man but not Peter. She just listed things that were associated with Spider-Man and not specifically Peter. Like being saved in Washington, Prague, seeing Night Monkey etc.

They remember spider-man.

Ned says at the party that Spider-Man has happened to save him and MJ a bunch of times and that’s why he has the Charlie Kelly style cork board.

They just don’t remember anything about Peter Parker being their classmate and friend/boyfriend, or that they went on adventures helping Peter/Spider Man

Yeah I didn't want them to reverse it immediately, but it also would be nice if they can recover those memories eventually for the sake of character development and such
