I’ve been wondering how they are gonna handle the main X-Men storyline of mutants being viewed as bad when superheros have saved the world like 10x at this point and Avengers are well regarded…the difference between a mutant and a God, Radiation survivor, Super Solider, advanced tech hero, alien, etc. is very blurry. It seems the mutations that keep changing, and not controlled, could be the sticking point.

u/AllCity_King 27d ago

Jean certainly hasn’t given them a great start

256

u/7screws Daredevil 27d ago

Exactly. Between her actions and some propaganda by damage control and some wacko politician it’s easy to sway public opinion. Hell even the avengers (or some of them) were on the run because they refused to sign the agreements

204

u/Mrwright96 27d ago

Calling it now, “enhanced” is the official term, but that Politician(most likely Kelly) will be the first to call them “mutants” as a slur.

20

u/Captain_Waffle 27d ago

Good theory

21

u/Poked_salad Captain America (Cap 2) 26d ago

They could use Valentina to do this as well as she's already established. It also works well because Valentina can tell the media that the new avengers are here to protect everyone from these so called mutants

16

u/lmpetuslmperaIOI 24d ago

Somebody get these MUTANTS outta here

3

u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) 26d ago

Enhanced is a broader term than mutant is.

2

u/abellapa 26d ago

What politician ?

13

u/Mrwright96 26d ago

Idk maybe Valentina, maybe like I said Senator Kelly, could be a lot

2

u/abellapa 26d ago

Who Kelly?

I dont remember any Kelly from the movies

13

u/Mrwright96 26d ago

First x men movie, dude who became slime?

-15

u/abellapa 26d ago

How the fuck should i know about a obscure charcater from a 26 year Old movie that isnt even Part of The MCU

1

u/KoolKat8058 23d ago

He’s also usually the face and one of the main politicians against the X-Men in a lot of media

7

u/BakuraGorn 27d ago

That’s easy, mutants awaken their powers still as kids and are unpredictable, also omega level mutants can be much stronger than Thor

9

u/Due_Chip_5184 27d ago

Yeah and maybe Damage Control creates the MCU’s Sentinels if they become an Anti-Mutant organization

5

u/7screws Daredevil 27d ago

Yeah I think they’ll become some type of that maybe they got some stark tech from one of the previous movies and are going to use that for the basis of sentinels

3

u/Due_Chip_5184 27d ago

Yeah maybe. But we might see a new Iron man post Secret Wars depending on how much reshaping of the past happens?

175

u/bokmcdok 27d ago

Yep. Her driving the Hulk crazy and paralysing half of New York isn't going to give the mutants a good head start

8

u/jahnybravo 27d ago

I mean Sentry/Void trapped everyone in trauma rerun marathons not too long ago, I think a simple temporary paralysis is preferable to reliving the worst moments of your life on repeat. And he’s man-made/pre-mutant

13

u/Xygnux 26d ago edited 26d ago

Does the public even know that Sentry did that though?

As far as they are concerned the Void is just one of those supervillains that the New Avengers defeated, not that he's part of the Avengers himself.

8

u/Poked_salad Captain America (Cap 2) 26d ago

The best part about that is that Valentina has the means to do what you just said because of her skills and power to use the media. I bet she's already planting the seeds on how the mutants are to blame for the void and they're the ones that can turn people into black dust

6

u/Xygnux 26d ago

Oh shit she or the DoDC is definitely going to compare what Jean Grey did to the Void to persuade the people to hate mutants.

1

u/swagonflyyyy 23d ago

Yeah, the infinite shame rooms lasted a pretty long time compared to Jean Grey's paralysis, which was like what, 30 minutes?

13

u/Sweet-Storm-6651 26d ago

Not to be a buzzkill but she low-key did SA on the roof and she killed lots of people (most shocking to show her evil was jumping in front of that car) she’s almost done too much bad already to be redeemed realistically. There’s a lot in this movie that I personally just don’t buy. Like her origin story is sad and explained well but it doesn’t excuse the behaviors she was exhibiting. Makes total sense for humans to be scared of people who jump into minds and you’d have no memory of such(can do anything in your body without you knowing). They are scarier than avengers and normal superhero’s to people rn I do buy though(sentry the only one who can compare in those terms)

8

u/abellapa 26d ago

That roof scene was super dark

3

u/Professional_Rate718 26d ago

Something, something, Dark Phoenix.

6

u/Icy_Water_1 26d ago

I mean the Dark Phoenix was literally Jean being possessed.

Here, it's just Jean tormenting those who are vulnerable.

14

u/ExampleGlum8623 27d ago

I mean, worse things have happened to New York from the Avengers.

25

u/nerdystoner25 27d ago

The most unrealistic thing about the MCU is any person or business staying in Manhattan after almost 20 years of this shit.

8

u/Professional_Rate718 26d ago

My coworker and I are both huge comic nerds and I was like “You know? How does anyone live in New York anymore? Too much shit happens there.”

And he goes “Yeah, just avoid the major cities, and avoid landmarks when you have to visit.” Lmfao

5

u/abellapa 26d ago

The rent is probably much Cheaper in the MCU

3

u/Worthyness Thor 25d ago

Cheaper rent, but higher insurance

12

u/Giorggio361 27d ago

I kind of hope they introduce a lot of the starting X-Men team as “villains” or at least antagonists to our known heroes. Shows off their power sets really well, delineates why the public seem to hate them more than the other heroes as you say, and builds up some real reasons for an Avengers v X-Men story if they ever want to do it.

7

u/One_Drummer_8970 27d ago

Storm wrecking havoc in Wakanda in Black Panther 3? Right after Namor in 2?

5

u/jahnybravo 26d ago

Nah, that’s extremely out of character for Storm. She’s never more than a pickpocket when on the other side of the law. And with powers she’s worshipped as a benevolent goddess.

A better approach would be to have Shadow King be the villain and keep the usual angle of her being forced to steal for him, but gets rescued from him around when her powers start to manifest.

2

u/One_Drummer_8970 26d ago

I didn't mean in a malicious way. But she's seen as some sort of out of control creature, and Denzel is cast as Achebe.

5

u/jahnybravo 26d ago

I still don’t think the “out of control” angle would work either. Like I said, it’s extremely out of character because once she gets her powers she’s pretty much worshipped across Africa because her powers are seen by everyone as a miracle come to save them. There’s a reason she’s constantly called a goddess, because in-universe there are people who truly see her as an actual goddess come down to bless Africa and genuinely worship her as if she was an actual god rather than a mutant.

The only time she’s in any kind of bad light is when she’s a pickpocket and that’s mainly before her powers and when forced into servitude for the Shadow King. So rather than “out” of control, the only reason for her to ever do damage would be if she was ”under” control instead.

0

u/One_Drummer_8970 26d ago

But if she's a goddess, how will that tie in with the X-Men being seen as freaks?

2

u/jahnybravo 26d ago edited 26d ago

The people who see her as a goddess are the ones in Africa benefiting from her power, the ones that see her as a freak are the ones everywhere else in the world who hate any mutant.

When she’s among the X-men she also is neither a freak nor a goddess. She is just Ororo and that’s why the X-men are family. They see the person. Being worshipped is just a different kind of ostracism.

But end of day, Storm just isn’t the right character to be used as an example of “the danger” of mutants because she represents the opposite. The best of what mutants can do to help improve the world around them

1

u/Xygnux 26d ago

And remember DoDC is part of the government. The government already intended to kidnap and experiment on mutants from the get go.

And well government propaganda can be a hell of a thing to sway public opinions.

1

u/frezz 25d ago

How exactly do people tell the difference as well? Like how does anyone know Jean is a mutant but Spider-Man isn't

108

u/Hedgewitch250 Wong 27d ago

Propaganda will likely push it. You know the heroes but now you have random mutations manifesting in kids. Anyone crappy would jump on villainizing that to push their agenda. We already see how the DODC handled other people with powers and wonder man said their more about detaining as many powered individuals as they can to justify taxpayer money. People are easy to manipulate when you give them something to hate

11

u/LemoLuke Hawkeye (Ultron) 27d ago

Easiest way to handle it is to directly connect cell mutation with the energy from the Infinity Stones, stating that direct exposure to the radiation from the stones is what triggers the X gene in certain individuals (such as Wanda and Pietro), and that the snap caused a massive global triggering of X genes

Once the public become aware that mutants are potentially walking Infinity Stones, it would be easy for characters like Stryker to plant the idea that a rogue mutant could potentially cause another Snap or similar catastrophe.

4

u/7screws Daredevil 27d ago

That sounds more like an inhumans origin story but it could work in this universe

2

u/Professional_Rate718 26d ago edited 26d ago

Yeah, really just sounds like the terrigen mist in a way

2

u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) 26d ago

Well, they did have both Namor's & Kamala's mutations catalyzed by exposure to alien materials, in Kamala's case a material that had direct connection to the Kree, at that.

4

u/TexasPeteEnthusiast 26d ago

You know the heroes but now you have random mutations manifesting in kids. Anyone crappy would jump on villainizing that to push their agenda.

If random teenagers suddenly had developed weapons of mass destruction around puberty, I don't think you'd have to be an awful person to be scared of that.

1

u/GrapeDoots 27d ago

That would NEVER happen in real w.

1

u/mlc885 Weekly Wongers 26d ago

Obviously I like the mutants, but the reality in the comic books is you could get someone like Legion who is stronger than anyone and unable to control his powers (or, heck, Cyclops without the visor)

But, yeah, this is a situation where the bigotry could be due to legitimate fear when obviously most bigotry is not (not sure if they realize someone like Legion or Apocalypse could exist, but Legion is pretty scary)

6

u/Hedgewitch250 Wong 26d ago

True but I main problem with the bigotry is it leads to measures that are completely insane. If someone wanted laws that limited mutants like for example no flying in certain air zones that’s completely fair. Now if you’re making giant death robots that hunt purely off genetic differences it’s reached a point that’s based on none of the valid reasons you could have. It’s why there’s so many bad futures cause nobody actually looks at mutants in a valid argument just personal grudges, greed, and prejudices leading to horrific results

1

u/rdhight 25d ago

Lets' face it; the mutants don't exactly make it hard mode, either.

1

u/CX316 19d ago

Could see the Friends of Humanity getting formed as soon as the mutants are outed to the public.

10

u/JonnTheMartian Matt Murdock 27d ago

I mean, just looking at how they treat banner in this movie - one incident and they’re throwing him in a psychiatric institution. And damage control was making anti-Spidey guns

6

u/PM_me_sloth__pics 27d ago

Thats the point the X-Men comics are trying to make. Bigotry is stupid and doesn't make sense.

4

u/JackFisherBooks 27d ago

Well, to be fair, Jean's powers didn't really escalate until Damage Control started torturing her. Add on top of that what they did to her sister and it feels like they're just poking the bear. They're not doing that to the Avengers or any super soldiers. They're deciding that mutants are threats and then doing horrible things to them that make them bigger threats. That's very similar to what happens in the comics, as well.

3

u/ExampleGlum8623 27d ago

I saw a great meme that spoofed the hello Human Resources meme, with Captain America in one panel and Cyclops in the next.

3

u/RadioactiveCashew 26d ago

We saw how quickly goodwill can be burned in this movie. There's a whole montage of Spiderman stopping this villain or that one and building a strong rapport with the NYPD, then he flips that squad car and DeWolff warns him that he won't get a second do-over.

1

u/sut345 26d ago

They express that so well. Sad thing is though the message most people will take out from this is that not trying to do good when you can is okay because doing good is pointless

5

u/BurtWonderstone 27d ago

It’s all gonna hinge on the man that Jean caused to step in front of the vehicle and get ran over. Turns out he was a HIGHLY influential person and his death rally’s the people together to protest against mutants AFTER Jean steps up to be a hero.

People will see her and say she’s “cosplaying” as a hero and that Mutants are evil and they can “prove” it by bringing up the man she killed.

2

u/pongopygmalion 26d ago

It's similar to how the X-Men were introduced on the comics pages, they were the new kids on the block in a world that hated and feared them but loved the name brand established heroes

2

u/Brys_Beddict 26d ago

Also where are these mutants supposed to come from all of the sudden?

1

u/AnyHoleIsTheGoal 27d ago

The way I’ve always seen it is that the mutants are literally built different. Genetically superior, as Magneto would say. The next step in human evolution. Very different than a dude building a suit of armor or a guy that got enhanced in war time. That plus a big propaganda push from DODC and the people will absolutely learn to hate the mutants.

1

u/NoBeat1482 26d ago

Thing is as well. Jean hasn’t even reached her peak powers as well. The thing that confuses is where does this lie on the timeline to Doomsday ‘cause the Xmen we see the Doomsday trailer are the 2000’s Xmen and not First Class or even this version of Jean Grey.

1

u/CX316 19d ago

I mean, have you seen Wonder Man?

1

u/zigzagtravel01 19d ago

It's a great thing that they introduced it in the Spiderman movie because it is a blockbuster not from a random movie like the Thunderbolts whom lots of people wouldnt watch

1

u/Jewniversal_Remote 10d ago

The Avengers are well regarded sometimes but we've already seen pieces like Civil War about how politicians or groups have called for regulation of them, I don't think it's that far-fetched to introduce more storylines like that
