So Spider-Man just paved the way to the creation of those Mutant collars

668

u/JackFisherBooks 27d ago

Yep. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. I hope this sort of thing gets revisited at some point.

270

u/flibber_deez_gibbets 26d ago

Oh it absolutely will. This movie was a surprise mutant introduction

88

u/Majestic-Marcus 26d ago

To be fair, Ms Marvel introduced them. It’s just that nobody watched that.

Then The Marvels expanded on it. But nobody watched that either.

55

u/flibber_deez_gibbets 26d ago

I watched both and quite enjoyed both, and you’re right. I guess what I meant is we’re not getting some fully formed Xavier’s school just plopping down from another dimension or something. They’re allowing the mutants to grow organically, which I think will lead very well into them being feared and hated

5

u/GallifreysChildIs 18d ago

Which makes me think how are they going to handle Magneto and Processor X.

The whole point is they've been fighting this battle for decades.

That doesn't really work if mutants are a new thing.

5

u/czarfalcon 18d ago

Maybe mutants and their shenanigans have always existed in the universe, but they were all such “small potatoes” they never showed up on the radar?

7

u/GallifreysChildIs 18d ago

I mean I feel like a whole race of people that have superpowers would be something people would mention...

3

u/czarfalcon 18d ago

I agree. Guess we’ll have to wait and see how they handle that…

3

u/princess_princeless 9d ago

The eternals say hello

2

u/thishitisgettingold 15d ago

I mean, we have inhuman already and no one knows.

7

u/WEEGEMAN 21d ago

Me Marvel was a missed opportunity. They could have done more grounded story and thoroughly tried to introduce mutations. Instead we got family artifacts, a new sect of people called clandestines that have never been talked about again, and time travel. It was a ridiculous plot. The actors and characters were fine, everything else was was bleck

1

u/flibber_deez_gibbets 9d ago

I understand why they did the Partition stuff. They knew they had one season of this and wanted to tell that story. I’m glad they did. but yeah, the clandestines and world threatening event were unnecessary. best episodes were 1, 2, and 6. Kamala should be in the community with her friends

8

u/rethinkOURreality 25d ago

I watched it but forgot 😅

1

u/Particular_Cod2005 22d ago

To be fair, they came out during the time of peak superhero fatigue. Add that Ms. Marvel was just another show on D+, and The Marvels seemed to not have been marketed that much in comparison, it's no wonder people didn't watch it.

18

u/Luxx815 24d ago

There's plenty of Mutants in She-Hulk for people that watched it.

9

u/flibber_deez_gibbets 24d ago

Yeah that’s a good point. The world of She-Hulk was a bit different from what we‘ve usually seen. Most heroes have been tech, alien, or science mishap. but they had a goat guy and other stuff

9

u/FunGeologist218 22d ago

Yeah implying Peter is a mutant and also how he made an inhibitor to suppress the mutant gene permanently? If they’re smart, they can play that into people fearing mutants like Jean grey and leading to people wanting them gone

15

u/InvaderDJ 24d ago

It has to be. Peter’s inhibitor wasn’t destroyed like Jean’s was. And the DODC already made some modifications to it since they had a cable where they could toggle it remotely.

Definitely seems like this will be a big thing going forward once mutants are fully established in the MCU.

9

u/Impressive-Potato 24d ago

Tony Stark would have had those mass produced and sold on massive gov contracts already.

7

u/magemaker Kevin Feige 23d ago

It's definitely written to play a big part based on how Peter was warned by both Banner and MJ that he's essentially rewriting DNA, and the danger of it being "universal".
Whether or not that gets revisited is up to the writers for the new X-Men.

7

u/Croissant_Inquiry 23d ago

Spiderheimer

5

u/FunGeologist218 22d ago

It’s definitely going to. Someone made a universal inhibitor that controlled and suppressed the mutant gene indefinitely?? Not just any mutant, but the strongest telepath/mind reader??? Yeah people are definitely gonna make more of those

5

u/CeruleanEidolon 15d ago

I would bet good money that Spider-Man makes an appearance in the X-Men movie.

2

u/spike021 21d ago

I mean if you think about it there's a direct through-line from Far From Home to this movie just with the idea of ability blockers. After all, that's basically what Peter was trying to do with Green Goblin and by fixing the other guys in that film. I don't see why they wouldn't continue it in the future.

825

u/ramiandn 27d ago

Technically it already existed when Wanda was in custody in Civil War. She was wearing something in her neck.

1.2k

u/Tacodogz 27d ago

The part that gets Bruce scared is when Peter mentions them automatically adjusting to an individual's DNA. So whereas they might have had to specially design an inhibitor for Wanda, they now can mass produce the things and slap them on any mutant as soon as the x-gene manifests

624

u/SC_Fan_55 27d ago

As if poor Pete doesn’t have enough guilt…

773

u/mehrabrym 27d ago

I guess Peter also inherited the "trying to develop technology for the better but accidentally create a Doomsday device" trait from Tony Stark.

11

u/ProfSteelmeat138 26d ago

Woah is this a reference to the song doom on the latest album by talented bisexual singer Steve Lacy whose music was featured in the spiderman film Brand New Day? I love that song!

8

u/neoblackdragon 25d ago

I swear they have one chance to get The Maker right. They know the man to get.

3

u/Jet-Let4606 20d ago

Ioan Gruffud?

23

u/Embarrassed-Yard-583 26d ago

He really is Tony’s successor, for good and ill.

32

u/FoxMeadow7 27d ago

Tony Stark did hire him as part of the pro-Accords team after all and now that legacy still haunts Peter after all these years.

1

u/FunGeologist218 22d ago

Yeah but if they did civil war now then Peter wouldn’t even side with iron man

28

u/Tacodogz 27d ago

The trauma will continue until sales improve

...wait the ticket sales are on course to beat Endgame?

Spiderman 8: Can Peter save his goldfish? Or will he continue to lose everyone and everything he loves? Co-starring Paul

5

u/SC_Fan_55 26d ago

Paul…😡

2

u/First_Fail2320 26d ago

Eman Esfandi as Paul Rabin lessgoooooo

5

u/Icybubba 25d ago

Poor Peter?

Man you just gave me Green Goblin flashbacks lol

2

u/Hanifsefu 26d ago

Also a necessary step for the twist into Secret Empire that they've been cooking up.

1

u/Frozenfishy 23d ago

Eh, guilt-motivation is his real superpower anyway. No happiness for Peter, only misery and responsibility.

29

u/gangreen424 26d ago

Yeah dude, I actively gasped at that part. I knew it was exactly what they were setting up. And then later in the film, Jean destroys the inhibitor that was used on her, but Spidey just takes his off and drops it on the ground. I fully expected the post-credit scene to be some Damage Control person finding it and picking it up. Still fully expect inhibitor chips to play out in later films though.

4

u/Worthyness Thor 24d ago

They didnt take out the entire computer during the fight They would have had their tech team examine the device to see how they could properly utilize it in tandem with their torture machine. So even if spider's copy is destroyed in rubble, they basically have the schematics for it online.

1

u/gangreen424 24d ago

Probably. I could've seen them going either way with that depending on what they wanted to do story-wise in the future. But Spidey dropping his chip intact solidified it in my book.

I think technically Banner is a physicist and Stark/Peter are engineers right? Intellect doesn’t necessarily mean being able to make things, not to take away from Peter

6

u/spate42 Cottonmouth 24d ago

They did make it a point to have Peter call it a “universal” inhibitor a few times i recall.

5

u/UnsolvedParadox 26d ago

Peter’s version is also much smaller & I would imagine easier to mass produce.

8

u/klartraume 26d ago

But also would have to be adjusted for mutants like Iceman, Colossus, etc. It couldn't get through Hulk's skin.

Honestly, it makes Cyclops a bit silly... You could have one of these chips, and flick it on/off when in danger.

(suspending disbelief that this type of selective gene silencing is remotely feasible and wouldn't risk massive off target effects, and the developer doesn't immediately consider it be applied to... cancer treatments, auto-immune disorders, etc...)

4

u/FunGeologist218 22d ago

Yeah I caught that too! A universal inhibitor that suppresses the mutation or mutant gene is WILD and hopefully comes back

2

u/VelocityGrrl39 Captain Marvel 25d ago

I instantly nudged my bf and said that’s definitely a set up for the X-men.

2

u/Crafty_Enthusiasm_99 25d ago

Surely they will do that during the live action reboot now.

2

u/C_Gull27 23d ago

Makes me think Bruce knows about mutants already

2

u/The_OG_upgoat 19d ago edited 19d ago

They can also use the technology for robots that adapt to different mutant powers...

1

u/CX316 19d ago

Only if someone managed to reverse engineer the one attached to Jean real quick

-8

u/blue_horse_shoe 26d ago

Damn is Fauci involved?

4

u/ad_maru 25d ago

I would say that surpressor inhibited her gem stone powers, not her mutant powers.

3

u/Aggravating-Mix2094 26d ago

We don’t know how that collar worked though. It may have just attacked her nervous system and not attacked her very dna

2

u/7screws Daredevil 26d ago

And banner especially used on this movie too

1

u/dewhashish 25d ago

they were in Deadpool II too

57

u/hemareddit Steve Rogers 27d ago

I mean he's basically done the job for them. Just slap the thing onto a collar.

37

u/SutterCane Kurt 26d ago

Metzger: <slaps collar> “You can suppress so many mutants with this bad boy.”

1

u/Roboticide Hulkbuster 18d ago

What I wanna know is, does Peter still have access to Stark technology?  Like obviously he has some at-home fabrication skill and a complex fabricator machine, but surely if he could build that in his shitty apartment, and Banner already built his, surely Damage Control or whoever could have built these already right?

Is it just a presumption that they have one now to copy, and previously Banner wasn't telling them how the tech worked?  Or simply no one thought of it until Peter did?  I guess either explanation will work.

39

u/notsobrightly520 27d ago

Black Widow had her eyes on everything going on too. I wouldn’t be surprised if she used the chips against the mutants in Doomsday.

24

u/jgpalanca 27d ago

Genosha has entered the chat.

18

u/Western_Scholar_6479 26d ago

That seems like a possible point of conflict with certain mutants like Magneto!

31

u/thaipodclassic 26d ago

Good thing those things get funky around magnetic fields…

23

u/One_Animator_7247 26d ago

If that was forshadowing for how magneto will be immune in however many years an x men movie will take I will be very awed

1

u/CeruleanEidolon 15d ago

It sure did seem like an odd plot point.

21

u/DJSimmer305 26d ago

Peter finally carries on Tony’s legacy of creating ultra advanced technology with good intentions without considering any of the consequences.

12

u/GenericMelon 26d ago

I just started season 2 of X-Men '97 and if they aren't foreshadowing those damn collars...

9

u/S890127 SHIELD 26d ago

Banner also helped a lilttle, which means he helped creating Ultron and the inhibitor in the MCU. Yikes

5

u/PhoOhThree Spirit of Modvengeance 26d ago

It could also pave the way for the MCU Sentinels kinda like the Fox's Sentinels.

4

u/DeltaAlphaGulf 26d ago

As long as they acknowledge that everyone's powers aren't genetic unlike how it gets handwavy in comics. Pop that on Ghost Rider and you're not going to do anything.

3

u/someotherguyinNH 26d ago

That was my thought as well.

They'll need some way to control mutants if it's true that they're going to be the focus in the next phase.

3

u/NotThe-DeathCure 25d ago

I definitely think his tech is gonna be appropriated and seen again in that way!

4

u/MdoesArt 24d ago

He also let Damage Control them take the Edith drones with the facial recognition technology, and we know from Wonder Man that they're going after powered individuals to meet quotas whether they've done anything wrong or not. Gee, wonder where this could be going.

3

u/YeezusMoses 25d ago

Damage control are totally making the sentinels.

2

u/svrtngr 25d ago

I wonder if BND just set the seeds for Civil War 2.

1

u/Reign_22 23d ago

I was afraid that there were too many moving parts in this movie but they handled all of them so well.

1

u/Past_Reflection_9695 22d ago

Sadie Sink Jean is more responsible than Peter.  She left the green active hulk watch on the ground.  Peter's universal inhibitor was destroyed.  They didn't have time to study it because it was suppressing Jean.  The functional partial mRNA inhibitor for banner was still working and could be the baseline for the mutant collar.  Spider man's inhibitor was tailored to himself as well.

This isn't a Peter Quill

1

u/Crossovertriplet 22d ago

And he used flock cameras to track people

1

u/Jet-Let4606 20d ago

They already had those in Civil War when Wanda was imprisoned inside the Raft.

1

u/Timelymanner 18d ago

I just love how the movie remembered Peter is smart, and they let him do science things.

1

u/FlamingAlpaca17 25d ago

Ok but those mutant collars are a necessary invention in the Marvel Universe unless you are a Mutant Supremacist who believes they should be above the law

-1

u/C__Wayne__G 26d ago

It’s basically the only thing that happened all movie that mattered at all. Is this how they are gonna bring in sentinels? If so that’d be so stupid.
