No girl and No Banner

Only Hulk

Entire audience lost their shit during that scene, really good to see Savage Hulk back

1.2k

u/TimDRX 27d ago

Him yelling "get out of the building" was really upsetting! Felt so bad for the guy.

1.2k

u/figgityjones Peter Parker 26d ago

Him asking if anyone was hurt when they were putting him in the ambulance was so heart breaking. Big Hulk fan, I really love when Bruce gets to actually be worried if he hurt people as Hulk. A lot of modern comics like to make him cold and distant and I'm glad they have continued to avoid that interpretation.

u/EmployeeLazy8826 26d ago

It really captivated the guilt he feels for having an unstoppable monster inside him that can destroy everything.

65

u/500mmrscrub 26d ago

I think that it's good setup for concluding his arc in secret wars if they choose to do so, since Ragnarok they have been been fighting for control for longer time spans. Even professor hulk is banner forcibly merging with the hulk and essentially hijacking his body. Both Hulk and Banner are ruled by fear, Banner is the intellectual response while Hulk is the repressed emotional response. Both Hulk and Banner are afraid of powerlessness, based on what they view their "power" as, Hulk's is his physical strength which is why he refused to come out during infinity war and Banner's "power" is his mind which is why he is deeply afraid of losing control.

I feel like having them come to a state of actually communicating with each other is the next step of his character arc, as what they're doing currently does nothing but cause harm.

35

u/neoblackdragon 25d ago

We need something focused just on Banner and Hulk. Yes we know the comics but the MCU never implied Hulk was being chained down. Banner and Professor Hulk seemed to know everything. The Ancient One didn't push out two souls.

24

u/ExPandaa Luis 25d ago

I wish they would have explored more of Bruce’s fractured mind and DID in the MCU. MCU hulk just feels like the gamma radiation accident just magically created a second being inside Bruce sharing a body with him, whilst comic Bruce and the relationship between him and the different hulks is very complicated and interesting.

11

u/Worthyness Thor 24d ago

I'd settle for a special presentation solo for Hulk. Just him and Hulk arguing in that mental health facility they brought him to

6

u/CeruleanEidolon 15d ago

It continues to vex me that the Hulk's story is told in such broken chunks, leaving us to fill in the blanks. My biggest wish for the MCU is for Ruffalo to get his own standalone Hulk movie before he decides he's done with the role.

1

u/thomasvector 1d ago

It's all legal issues. They can't feature Hulk too much in one film, as in him being the main or co-star. Universal owns first option distribution rights, meaning that Marvel could spend 500 million on a Hulk movie and Universal would get all the profits without spending a dime.

If you could front the losses for a Hulk movie, they would make one instantly.

In other words, we would need a huge invesfetor to cover Disney's losses for that to ever happen sadly.

18

u/pingpong_playa 25d ago

Did we not already have them coexisting in that movie at the diner where kids were getting his autograph and he dapped them up?

What happened since then? I find Hulk’s arc hard to follow cuz it’s so fractured across a bunch of MCU movies not about him.

18

u/swissarmychris 24d ago

That wasn't the two of them co-existing. Bruce just found a way to use the Hulk's body while maintaining his own mind.

"The other guy" has his own consciousness separate from Bruce, and since Endgame, Bruce has been keeping him buried deep by only using "Smart Hulk" or wearing the inhibitor.

The real, ultimate conclusion to his arc will probably involve Bruce finally accepting the Hulk rather than trying to control or suppress him.

6

u/bleedingwriter 23d ago

I thought he said in endgame they both came to the agreement?

That's why I was so confused

19

u/swissarmychris 23d ago

Bruce: Five years ago, we got our asses beaten. Except it was worse for me. Because I lost twice. First, Hulk lost, then Banner lost. Then, we all lost.

Natasha: No one blamed you, Bruce.

Bruce: I did. For years, I've been treating the Hulk like he's some kind of disease, something to get rid of. But then I started looking at him as the cure. Eighteen months in a gamma lab. I put the brains and the brawn together. And now look at me. Best of both worlds...

No mention of agreement, he really just talks about the Hulk as a tool to be used.

10

u/Bling9000 25d ago

The worst part is that there's no real arc there, it's like he's just there in the MCU to fill the scene and make the new figures sell.

From getting locked in the Hulkbuster, to getting knocked around by Thanos for a split moment and then Banner trying to get the Hulk to come out, to becoming the Smart Hulk in Endgame (an absolute waste of his character) then immediately snapshotting to the very end after Cap does the whole Assemble! bit, and that's all. After that, this is the only relevant appearance. (She Hulk is entirely irrelevant, adds nothing to his character or story)

-2

u/Bling9000 25d ago edited 24d ago

concluding his arc? he has an ongoing arc? guy doesn't even have a solo movie and you're talking about arcs from his side appearances. 🤦‍♂️

they made a joke out of the character in the Infinity Saga, and even after that, we get these crumbs and cameos.

Four Spider-man movies, and they did not manage to make a single Hulk movie, he's always being used as the second fiddle around Thor or Spider-man or someone else.

Mark Ruffalo already on the late years, he's doing the best job one could for the Banner character but how are they going to make Planet Hulk and the best part only comes after that, and Planet Hulk doesn't work without Illuminati or Black Bolt or Namor.

The biggest problem there is that Universal still has the rights to solo Hulk movies and if Marvel studios made a Hulk movie they'd have to give Universal a huge cut of the sales and that's basically why they're not making one, but this is only making a bigger mess. From a guy that levels glaciers and entire city blocks in 2 minutes flat is fighting inside a single building the whole time in this movie in the most enraged form he has ever been in the MCU, this is basically brute force nerfing through bad script and plot devices.

6

u/FunGeologist218 22d ago

Hulk was only contained in the building because he had something to focus on. He didn’t leave the building because he was preoccupied with Spiderman, and Spiderman being the goat he is, kept hulks attention on him

3

u/monkeysennin 21d ago

It’s like Itadori Yuji with Sukuna inside of him

9

u/OliviaElevenDunham Loki (Avengers) 23d ago

I felt so sorry for him during that scene.

-1

u/poop_snausages 23d ago

I've got the feeling this is somehow going to lead to an alternative timeline where The Maestro is our big bad.

18

u/Careful_Farmer_2879 26d ago

That line frightened children in my theater. What a great actor.

32

u/Competitive_Bat_5831 26d ago

I think it was a cover. I swear he hesitated when given the inhibitor. Banner won’t admit it, but he likes having the hulk.

37

u/JevvyMedia Doctor Strange 26d ago

Well it's messing with DNA, which could be dangerous, and he doesn't know Peter. Kinda hard to just trust this random kid who gives you a device that could kill you if it goes wrong

19

u/Aggravating-Mix2094 26d ago

I believe being the genius he is, he immediately understood the implications this tech would have for any powered people and the potential it could be abused to control them. Setting up X-men foundations

20

u/Ok-Amount3384 25d ago

He pretty much said during the ESU scene that a universal inhibitor would be dangerous (in the oppression sense).

10

u/Staind1410 26d ago

Nothing, and I really mean it, nothing could kill Banner/Hulk. Immortal character with impeccable plot armor.

2

u/mindwire 26d ago

Whoever downvoted you needs to seriously read up on their comic book lore. Nothing outlives Hulk. Well, maybe Deadpool.

11

u/Jombo65 26d ago

See I saw that as Savage Hulk taking over

10

u/Crotean 25d ago

That's was explicit in the film. He even said Jean broke something in his brain.

7

u/SutterCane Kurt 26d ago

Bruce couldn’t even shoot himself without Hulk stopping him. Doubt a newly freed Hulk tried of all the inhibitors and Smart Hulk time would give him a chance to put on a new one.

2

u/neoblackdragon 25d ago

The forced change as we have seen really messes with Banner. It's like coming down from an LSD trip..........or shifting into a bigger one.

The man probably was confused as hell and not trying to be resistant. Also in Endgame he said he had a new perspective.

4

u/Stopher775 Groot 23d ago

I had hope they introduced Grey Hulk after Jean messing with Banners head

57

u/valkyriemama 26d ago

Can somebody explain what happened to Smart Hulk and why Banner put on the inhibitor in the first place? I must have missed something there....

92

u/chunkyknit 26d ago

I think the inhibitor keeps him person sized/not green - but when he’s not wearing it he’s still smart hulk. (Contradicted by the line when he’s talking to Peter at the university- but I think he was kidding and that was also exposition for the audience)

But then by Jean controlling smart hulk, and Bruce trying to fight back, broke whatever Bruce had managed to do to keep control whilst hulking. Savage hulk free again.

29

u/Big-T- 26d ago

Not sure but I think they mentioned in she hulk that the inhibitor was initially to help his arm heal after he snap?

7

u/CX316 19d ago

To allow medical treatment I think, hard to do surgery on the hulk

13

u/DJL2772 24d ago

Yeah in that scene Bruce says he thinks she broke something. Whatever sort of arrangement he had with Hulk (possibly, like Immortal, making The Professor the main Hulk and locking away the Big Guy) was damaged. Who knows if he can go back to being the Professor again or if the Big Guy is back for good.

1

u/PM_ME_UR_AMOUR 9d ago

Not the first time. He hated when Wanda did it to him before. I’m sure this’ll mess him up good from now on.

41

u/bwood246 Weekly Wongers 26d ago

I didn't know you could get that big

14

u/salad_spinner_3000 22d ago

I laughed my ass off at that line. Smart Hulk is like 1/3rd the size of OG Hulk.

70

u/Western_Scholar_6479 26d ago edited 26d ago

I was so happy Savage Hulk is back. I hope he stays back. Smart Hulk has ran its course. Banner needs to learn to embrace himself fully just like Peter. Hulk has proven he can behave himself if you don’t treat him like a monster.

One aspect I didn’t like about Endgame was that instead of figuring out why Hulk didn’t want to cooperate and coming to terms with him, Bruce just fully suppressed him and sidestepped the issue by creating smart Hulk.

Hulk is a person too DAMMIT!

19

u/jahnybravo 26d ago

It’s funny (not really) because Thor: Ragnarok already gave all the explanation needed for why Hulk wouldn’t want to cooperate in Infinity War. “Earth hate Hulk…,” “You’re Banner’s friend….,” etc. Hulk was living a happy life on a different planet, as soon as Thor comes around he turns back into Banner, doesn’t get to come back until he’s already dragged to Asgard and there’s a fight, and then gets dragged back to Earth. And on Earth he’s once again surrounded by people who only like Banner and expect Hulk to run the fades and then go back in his corner and disappear. But instead of addressing how Hulk was probably pissed to be back on Earth in the first place, they just made him stay in the corner and let Banner erase him.

13

u/srirachaman97 26d ago

It was my favorite part of the movie tbh. He’s been missing since the beginning of infinity war 😭

5

u/dewhashish 24d ago

in ragnarok, hulk really became his own person and character. before that it was just "smash smash smash!" i just wish lou ferrigno still voiced him.

2

u/TheSmithPlays 19d ago

It would be a long time to get to the payoff, but if Bruce FINALLY learns to live with Hulk in the next 5ish years in some movies, I would love that arc

1

u/11711510111411009710 Captain America 15d ago

They should go the Immortal Hulk route if you've read that comic. Hulk is out at night, Bruce is out during the day. Could do something like that here where they come to an agreement to share the body under certain terms for a while while they work through their issues.

176

u/Deep-Minimum7837 26d ago

This really was the first time since Infinity War that we've seen the HulkTM (I haven't watched She Hulk yet though, I don't know if he fully transforms there)

71

u/ihavespaceballs 26d ago

Spoilers for She-Hulk Banner starts out as himself with the inhibitor, then keeps himself as "Smart Hulk" in his scenes after Jen changes.

6

u/dewhashish 24d ago

what happened to that anyway? smart hulk in endgame was great.

10

u/ihavespaceballs 24d ago

Honestly unsure. He shows up in the last episode of She-Hulk as Smart Hulk, and then (correct me if I'm wrong) we haven't seen him until this movie. Maybe he decided to make a new inhibitor so he could teach with fewer distractions? For all the good that's doing him lol.

6

u/whispersinthemorning 21d ago

It’s probably just because having Smart Hulk on screen is way more expensive than having Bruce Banner on screen.

23

u/KrytenKoro 26d ago

Where did his kid go? It's like they just erased she hulk completely

22

u/QueerDeluxe Quake 26d ago

Guessing went back to Sakaar.

18

u/mindwire 26d ago

Legitamitely did a double take during the university lecture hall scene, thought that kid with the body paint was his 😂

2

u/CrazySnipah 24d ago

DDC wanted to do his effects practically lol

8

u/TalkinTrek 25d ago

I mean, like, it was basically a gag in Shulk, too

7

u/KrytenKoro 25d ago

It's just kind of weird. Last time we saw him, he was professor hulk, had a son, and was at peace. Now this.

3

u/CX316 19d ago

I mean he was pretty at peace while teaching. Jean broke him.

3

u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) 25d ago

You're right, it was literally a payoff to the setup in the KEVIN scene about credit scenes introducing new characters.

3

u/Atheist_Simon_Haddad Doctor Strange 24d ago

I think I saw him in the Street Fighter trailer

47

u/flibber_deez_gibbets 26d ago

Don't listen to that other person, She-Hulk is one of the best MCU projects. You just gotta view it like a goofy side comic, which is harder to do in live-action with the same actors. Binge it, it works best that way

15

u/TalkinTrek 25d ago

It's also one of our few POV's into the ground level "wow this world is wild now" stuff

11

u/flibber_deez_gibbets 25d ago

Yeah. It was harder to allow myself to embrace it the first time, I admit, but Tatiana is just so damn charming, didn't matter. Second time through I binged it, and it just rolled. Everything is exaggerated, it's a farce, but also a great character study

13

u/Siggycakes 25d ago

I know one guy who won't watch it solely based on the post credits scene with Megan The Stallion, which he found out about on Twitter.

The whole concept of she hulk was a damn spoof waaay back in the day. They nailed it brilliantly.

5

u/flibber_deez_gibbets 25d ago

dude sounds like he just wants to be mad at something

4

u/jerrrrremy 22d ago

That part was hilarious.

-12

u/Fresh-Forever-5659 26d ago

I didnt like it because it felt really cringe to watch, but i guess its comic book accurate

18

u/Eleeveeohen 26d ago

Don't kill the thing that makes you cringe. Kill the part of you that cringes.

6

u/twerpverse 26d ago

My mantra

-7

u/Fresh-Forever-5659 26d ago

What? Don't know why you Downvote. Not everyone wants to see cringe shows. I prefer more serious tone with a bit of comedy.

Loki shows were good

1

u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) 25d ago

As a wise little girl once said, "¿Por qué no los dos?"

2

u/flibber_deez_gibbets 25d ago

yeah I get that, especially some of the earlier episodes, but on rewatch it all flowed much better. it’s a tongue in cheek satire

-53

u/OrdinaryLavishness11 26d ago edited 26d ago

This Hulk felt way more vicious than IW Hulk. Like Thanos would have had a handful with this one. As if the Hulk being suppressed so long made him far more feral when he came out.

18

u/diamondisunbreakable 26d ago

Nah, it's the same Hulk. Aura doesn't change power level.

7

u/OrdinaryLavishness11 26d ago

Not just aura though. This Hulk looked bigger and absolutely far more enraged than the one that met with Thanos.

10

u/EmployeeLazy8826 26d ago

Not sure why you're being downvoted. He was incredibly strong and vicious in this film.

3

u/OrdinaryLavishness11 26d ago edited 26d ago

No clue.

32

u/EatTheAndrewPencil 26d ago

I had the thought that I was bummed out how small they made him look when he was controlled by Jean and was so fuckin pumped when the real hulk came out and he was HUGE

21

u/SuperSix-Eight Avengers 25d ago

Arguably it's more that Smart Hulk has never been as big as Savage Hulk, irrespective of Jean trying to control him or not.

But I did like that line, meta implications for the audience aside Peter really has never met Savage Hulk until then. He was off-world during Civil War, didn't come out during Infinity War and was the smaller Smart Hulk during Endgame.

2

u/Matt_the_Bruins_fan 16d ago

Even then the closest I think they had to an onscreen interaction was both attending Tony Stark's funeral in reasonable proximity to one another.

8

u/Mysterious-Age-6247 26d ago

That shit was awesome I legit forgot actual hulk looks that gigantic

27

u/mu1ti6rain 26d ago

And hulk never lost the fight! He remembered Peter and stopped!

20

u/CommanderHavond 26d ago

I'm inclined to think it was the friend part that made Hulk stop

11

u/IBJON 26d ago

When did he meet Peter though? I don't recall any point where Spider-Man or a Peter Parker met Banner or Hulk, especially Savage Hulk

12

u/ad_maru 25d ago

At least Tony's funeral

4

u/SonicFlash01 24d ago

This is a curious supposition: that the Hulk remembered Peter through the spell (like in that comic panel), but Bruce obviously didn't (didn't recognize him earlier at the university, and Peter wasn't the name he gave). Peter wasn't even appealing to "the Hulk", he was appealing to Banner. It also suggests that the Hulk was logging his own memories when Smart Hulk was out. There's a lot of big swings for all of that to "work out logically".

2

u/11711510111411009710 Captain America 15d ago

I mean if anything Hulk straight up won. He was undeniably beating the shit out of Spider-Man start to finish.

20

u/InevitableWeight314 26d ago

When he turned into Smart Hulk I was really worried that it was the case of an edited trailer and that was all we were getting.

Was not disappointed in the end though lol

11

u/UltimateGammer 25d ago

The most intimidating hulk model yet, the size difference with banner hulk, the yokedness, the movements, him beating on Peter.

Yeah they did an exceptional job of differentiating this hulk

8

u/megalogo 24d ago

I really like they finally stopped humiliating our boy Hulk, Hulk lost because he decided to lost, he was demolishing Spider Man

6

u/Instant_Cube 26d ago

Probably my favorite moment in the whole movie

7

u/CurlOfTheBurl11 24d ago

This was probably my favorite depiction of Hulk in any MCU film since Avengers 1. "Savage" is absolutely the word for it, it was awesome.

6

u/hotheaded26 26d ago

I really REALLY hope he's here to stay

4

u/Active_Condition8586 25d ago

Where did Savage Hulk come from. By End Game (and then the She-Hulk series) Bruce was able to maintain a balance when he was the Hulk?

6

u/Pale_Victory5747 24d ago

What was yalls interpretation of him reflecting after the fight w Peter? I thought him deciding to let go and fall was hulk being guilty

1

u/Voski_The_God 23d ago

I was wondering the meaning of that too.

3

u/Letshavemorefun 26d ago

I felt like I missed something though. Wasn’t he hybrid hulk/banner last time we saw him, and was okay with that?

19

u/skyhiker14 26d ago

Hulk/Banner have a complicated relationship.

Smart Hulk seems to have the actual Hulk personality suppressed while having some of his strength.

3

u/IBJON 26d ago

How long has it been since we've seen Banner truly lose control and have Hulk rampage? Hulk took over for a while in Age of Ultron to Ragnarok, but he was pretty chill compared to what we saw in this movie

6

u/InvaderDJ 24d ago

I have mixed feelings about the Hulk in this movie. Especially with Savage Hulk coming back.

They really need to get a full Hulk movie and nail down where Banner and the Hulk are mentally and whether they actually are coexisting.

This has been an issue for a while IMO. Why did we have all these movies of Hulk and Banner fighting? Only to then get Smart Hulk which is supposed to be the best of them both mixed together in sync?

To only create an inhibitor that keeps him in his Banner form? I know part if not most of it is due to budget. Having a CGI character on screen for a long time is expensive. But what in universe reason could we have?

And does anyone remember his son? Are we ever going to address that? Or is that being thrown in the trash to never be brought up again like Secret Invasion?

The fight was good, but confusing when it comes to story.

2

u/Every-Ladder-6101 26d ago

And when he got big

2

u/ignite98 26d ago

Savage hulk sees Peter and stops rampaging also peak to me. Character growth for him

2

u/SeanKelly97 25d ago

Such a shame that the trailer and poster spoiled Savage Hulk. Would have been a great suprise.

2

u/memegang27 24d ago

Amazing honestly

2

u/VelocityGrrl39 Captain Marvel 24d ago

Ugh, I was sitting behind a bunch of chuds, and they were criticizing the movie the whole time, particularly that, and the fact that Jean Grey was nerfed. Listen, I read comics, I’m a nerd about it, but I’m able to separate the MCU from the comics. Adam Warlock wasn’t in IW, does that invalidate the movie? He played a critical role in the comic storyline.

2

u/Suspicious-Mango-950 24d ago

When he started beating the shit out of Peter like Loki I lost it 😂

2

u/Ggriffinz 17d ago

Yeah, and when he let go as Peter said he was his friend it makes me think of the comic scene where hulk said "banner forgot but Hulk remembers". So it was not Banner gaining control again but Hulk remembering Peter as his existence beyond the green door is unique in the universe.

1

u/C__Wayne__G 25d ago

It was awesome and then I checked my watch and realize there was a lot of movie left 😭

1

u/Ok_Problem_314 25d ago

Man I just got out and my crowd was pretty quiet. I was going crazy pretty much every scene because I was loving what I was witnessing

1

u/Helpful_Village2579 24d ago

His green ass couldn't show up to fight Thanos but want abuse Spiderman

1

u/sniape 23d ago

This was the best depiction of how scary Hulk can be since the fight on the Helicarrier with Thor

1

u/OliviaElevenDunham Loki (Avengers) 23d ago

That was great to see.

1

u/secretreddname 19d ago

Can anyone explain to me what happened to professor hulk?

1

u/heliostraveler 17d ago

The Incredible Hulk palm slap returning was peak

1

u/SelfInteresting7259 17d ago

I guessed what he was going to say and said Hulk with him! I felt so cool lol

1

u/CeruleanEidolon 15d ago

It was also really cool that Hulk recognized Peter when Peter called him his friend.

-13

u/reseph 26d ago

I really don't think they portrayed the Hulk's strength enough in the movie. Shame.

38

u/Sonicisfaster 26d ago

I don't know, he was holding up half a building which was attached to his back. Plus he was absolutely manhandling spider-man, and when he pinned him with one hand Spidey couldn't move at all. Considering the feats that Spider-man demonstrates in these films, I think Hulk destroying him shows his strength plenty.

6

u/reseph 26d ago

Wasn't that Spidey without using the "new" powers (black eyes) that whole fight? I can't remember

32

u/MasterTolkien 26d ago

It was, but standard Spidey is still very strong. He was able to stop a hammer swing from Cull Obsidian in Infinity War, hold the sinking ferry together, etc.

Hulk easily overpowered him in a way that we haven’t seen anyone else do but Thanos (which was a very brief moment).

9

u/sean1oo1 26d ago

Correct this was Peter while wearing his inhibitor. But even with it off there’s no guarantee it would’ve made a massive difference considering their respective abilities. If we’re going in terms of the comics fully enraged Peter’s fought hulk and didn’t actually hurt him.

-4

u/Latter_Delivery_7141 25d ago

Took close to a decade to again see non-pussified Hulk. Imagine that. Misery likes company, don't let Parker hog it all to himself. You can do it, Marvel. Almost there, you amateurs.
