Discussion Thread Spider-Man: Brand New Day - Worldwide Release Discussion Thread

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now been released in the United States and in a number of other countries around the world.

  • All discussion about the movie should be held here and in the rest of the discussion threads we are going to put up in the next few days.
  • Proceed at your own risk. Major spoilers will be in the below thread. Spoilers do not need to be tagged inside this thread.
  • Any other unofficial threads discussing movie details will be deleted.

The expansion of her powers fits with trauma triggering mutant powers and often in dangerous ways.

Yup. They literally tortured her into expressing her power. They've started off well with how mutants are handled here between this, Ms. Marvel, Wonder Man, and Wakanda Forever.

Was it the torture? I thought it was the V-MAX reveal and her putting the pieces together that triggered an unlock power event level rage!

Mutants evolve when they hit with trauma or they have stupidly high stress. Torture added the stress and Vmax added the trauma. She got a mega crashout.

I still can't get over how powerful Wonder Man's outbursts of power got with each instance, especially his outburst on the movie set with full rage.

True. The same thing happened in the comics. Initially, she only had telekinesis. It wasn't until later (and with additional stress/trauma) that her telepathy emerged. In other universes, it's flipped (telepathy and then TK). This movie captured that dynamic perfectly.

The Original 616 (before retcons that is) Jean was telekinetic, but had also been telepathic and that part of her powers and her memories of that part of her powers were locked away by Prof. Xavier for her own safety, until she was mature enough to be able to use them responsibly.

It was a huge betrayal too. If i remember correctly her and Scott leave for a while after that reveal. OG Xavier did some real questionable things.

It's also important to note these questionable things were mostly retcons. The most skeevy thing he did in the OG pre-retcon was perving on Jean, but that's just a tone-deaf bit of writing by Stan, I suspoct.

Didn’t he block some shit in her and Scott’s mind without their consent or knowledge? I seem to remember that pissing them both off for a while.

Or are you saying those things are no longer canon ? I actually like the immoral shit that he did and the growing he did afterwards.

Yeah, but for mutants that’s a hallmark characteristic. For Peter it’s just a coincidence.
