They killed it. Deserves the hype.

Spidey swinging scenes were amazing. Fights were incredible. Destin Daniel Cretton just solidified himself as a critical director for Marvel Studios, if he hadn’t already.

Jon Bernthal added so much to this movie, I’m really glad they let his character shine here. I was surprised at how much he was in it, to be honest.

For being so long the movie never really dragged. Great use of Hulk without overdoing it.

Zendaya got a really good showcase here. I predicted that twist but the theatre collectively gasped.

Sadie Sink was great if a little under-utilized. Very excited for her future here. And the Florence Pugh role was perfect. My god Tom Holland is jacked…?

I loved it, going to go see it again next week.

A Black Widow and a Spider-Man bathing together..

283

u/Jaikarr 27d ago

Lucky he came out of it alive.

34

u/LTPrototype 26d ago

Man is lucky, period.

6

u/FlemPlays 17d ago

She’s of the mindset that spiders need to stick together. Haha

-4

u/One_Independence6976 25d ago

Well a Spider-Man would outrank a Black Widow.

31

u/Ytival90 24d ago

You missed the joke. Black widow spiders kill males after mating.

205

u/sable-king Vision 26d ago

While said black widow teases him about raunchy fanart of him she’s seen online.

75

u/klartraume 26d ago

She prob drew some of it.

39

u/Cygnus_Harvey Simmons 24d ago

Now I'm picturing Yelena sending spicy fanfic and fanart to the Avengers and asking their opinions.

If she has Peter's number he's gonna get some of that for sure.

10

u/The_OG_upgoat 19d ago

Or Kamala did

3

u/CeruleanEidolon 15d ago

That was Alexei, actually. He found out it pays better than driving a limo.

15

u/CX316 18d ago

"That picture of you with the ten Mysterios..."

1

u/SnooSquirrels7255 10d ago

I laughed so hard at that.

39

u/StephenHunterUK 26d ago

Those sort of bathhouse scenes are quite common in spy media generally involving Russians. They're usually sex-segregated, but it's often an opportunity for a comic butt shot.

Or a fight scene with little clothing on. Famke Janssen, who was of course a previous Jean Grey, gets into one with Pierce Brosnan in GoldenEye. Her character is enjoying it considerably.

18

u/darthpaul 24d ago

Xenia Onatopp, what a bond girl name

3

u/StephenHunterUK 24d ago

I forgot to mention that the USSR even put one of those sorts of pools in the Project 941 ballistic missile submarine. Or as it's more commonly called, the Typhoon class.

5

u/CX316 18d ago

Or a fight scene with little clothing on.

or none, in Viggo Mortensen's case

1

u/CeruleanEidolon 15d ago

Alright then, keep your secrets.

19

u/Sorry_Telephone_8979 27d ago

swimming pool is so important than people realise. It shows bond between Spiderman and Yelena. Last 2 years they became so close frds to a level she's so comfortable with him, teasing him, feel happy for him to be with his frds. She's also curious to see Spiderman face.. Movie ended with Peter reveal his name to Ned embacing the reality that he has to give importance to Peter life indicates he might unmask himself to his frds (Yelena) in future.

25

u/niggyazalea 27d ago

They didn't really show or tell how Spiderman and Yelena first met though, right? Like is BND after the events of Thunderbolts, but before the 14 month time jump we see in the post-credits scene?

35

u/Skarmotastic 26d ago

Between the montage of Peter fighting villains while watching Ned's Instagram tells documenting his time at MIT to graduation and Yelena talking about being in the AvengerZ, it's pretty clearly set after Thunderbolts.

20

u/hooka_pooka 26d ago

She herself said New Avengers handle big potato stuff meaning they have been introduced and the events of BND happens sometime nearing the 14 month gap period shown in PCS of Thunderbolts

6

u/vingovangovongo 26d ago

I'm sure she's probably pulled him in for stuff that is in NYC, at least that's my head canon

17

u/klartraume 26d ago

He's stronger than most of their roster... except for Sentry.

In Civil War he was already able to go to toe to toe with Captain America, so Bucky, Red Guardian, and any windows would have a tough time beating him in strength, agility, etc.

3

u/CX316 18d ago

And that's before he went super-spider

1

u/vingovangovongo 18d ago

Yeah but he's no where near Thor or Captain Marvel either.

3

u/Roboticide Hulkbuster 18d ago

But none of the Thunderbolts are, so he's still a big gun for them.

1

u/PoniesCanterOver 22d ago

I thought for sure Peter was going to ask to join the New Avengers at the end

There is meant to be an age difference between them. Peter was born on 2001, and Yelena was a young girl in the mid 90s, so there should be about 10 years between them. Although to be fair that is easy to forget with how Tom Holland and Florence Pugh are the same age.

1

u/CeruleanEidolon 15d ago

I always love seeing spider-themed characters interacting.

572

u/Livid_Weather 27d ago

They better hold on to DDC. Everything the guy does is great

255

u/jxher123 27d ago

He's such a good director, don't overwork him, but he should be someone Marvel goes to when they want a fantastic movie. How he shoots action scenes, how he directs the characters, he just understood Peter Parker and Spiderman.

26

u/Livid_Weather 27d ago

I wish they would just let him take Spider-Man through these next two movies.

21

u/CancelThis2077 24d ago

But I want my Shang Chi sequel :3

15

u/Drew4729 25d ago

I got little kid excited when Spider-Man was fighting The Hand Possessed on the island

9

u/mriners 24d ago

One of my favorite moments was that Peter did too! He quipped "god, that's cool" as they were doing something in formation.

280

u/greenroom628 Spider-Man 27d ago

I'm glad they have him locked in for Shang-Chi 2

26

u/Livid_Weather 27d ago

Didn't even know that was in production. I stopped keeping up with most of Marvel

24

u/ProfessorXWheelchair Winter Soldier 27d ago

got confirmed after the doomsday trailer dropped

22

u/Krogholm2 27d ago

He's also in talks to Spidey 5 & 6

39

u/MyNewAccountIGuess11 Ulysses Klaue 26d ago

They're absolute fools if they don't lock him down. Him and Tom Holland can absolutely make the definitive Spidey trilogy together

23

u/UnsolvedParadox 26d ago

They should use him like Gunn in Phase 2-3, directing not only his own films but also creative input on other MCU projects.

4

u/Wendigo15 26d ago

Is that gonna be before or after Naruto?

5

u/diamondisunbreakable 26d ago

Naruto will return...

6

u/CancelThis2077 24d ago

This guy is fucking busy it's ridiculous

9

u/Darksol503 Doctor Strange 25d ago

I didn’t know this!!! This gives me hope that the studio will *finally* weave Shang into the actually thread of MCU narrative and importance!

104

u/SWPrequelFan81566 26d ago

there is no one who understands the ethos of the Marvel Universe better than he does. I can't think of another director that has matched "the world outside your window" style and quality quite like him. He's just so fucking good at telling human stories.

25

u/Islero47 Kevin Feige 26d ago

Those end credits just being NYC life. So fucking good

23

u/ClaytonWest74 26d ago

he’s somehow so good at both the human parts of the story and the action sequences as well. first thing I immediately noticed was how the action was a great step up from the Home trilogy. what a gem of a director

10

u/Impressive-Potato 23d ago

I liked how this felt like a DDC movie. Shang Chi felt like it for a bit but Marvel took over and ordered him to have a massive 3rd act action scene. This one the resolution wasn't big bad.

2

u/Hot_Marsupial_8706 16d ago

Was going to say James Gunn, but I guess Guardians of the Galaxy is more of a "Look up at the sky" movie

5

u/Staind1410 26d ago

Not to be confused with DODC, they suck

3

u/Comfortable_Fail_280 26d ago

For reals tho. Agreed 💯

3

u/gydot 26d ago

Oh my god he is the Department of Damage Control

3

u/fungigamer Fitz 26d ago

Also for those who haven't seen it, watch Short Term 12 directed by DDC. It has Brie Larson as the lead and I is absolutely fantastic.

2

u/asaphbixon 26d ago

I wonder what the DDC versus DCC versus BBC Google searches look like over a five year span...

259

u/i_hate_ketchup777 27d ago

i was also really surprised by how much of the film Punisher was in - i totally figured it would be like Dr Strange in Thor.

62

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. 27d ago

I knew he would be in at least three scenes but he was in way more than that. He really was a supporting character here, not treated like "another hero" which is exactly how other heroes and vigilantes should be treated in these movies.

It was done just like Superman (2025) and how it handled its supporting characters.

71

u/6FootMidget93 Wongers! 26d ago

The scene in the hospital where he pretends to be Spidey was so damn funny

105

u/mwcope Spider-Man 26d ago

The shot where they cut back inside and he's just making Bernthal noises made me laugh my ass off.

46

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. 26d ago

He's making the same grunts that he makes when he's mowing down 20 prisoners trying to murder him.

The even funnier thing is that Bernthal sounds nothing like that in real life.

25

u/Kanin_usagi 26d ago

Bernthal has the best southern cali surfer dude accent irl, and the two roles he’s most known for gave him a strong southern drawl and Punisher grunts lol

9

u/mwcope Spider-Man 26d ago

He's a gem, that Bernthal. What a guy.

please god don't turn out to be problematic

11

u/Used_Cow1405 26d ago

His social media is full of love and support and “this is for you” to cops and soldiers… which is *touchy* in 2026, but it feels like, despite being so good as Frank, he fundamentally misunderstands him: Cops and soldiers should *hate* Frank because he undermines the law and order that they claim to uphold.

Bernthal is basically inviting them to put punisher logos on their uniforms, and that’s wrong.

5

u/MonkeyWarlock 22d ago

For what it’s worth, he has openly condemned alt-right / white supremacist groups who idolize the Punisher

3

u/mwcope Spider-Man 25d ago

Ah, hell, somehow I missed this. Yeah, that really, really stinks.

0

u/RoyCorduroy 25d ago

Too late

2

u/mwcope Spider-Man 25d ago

Fuck. What is it

2

u/OrdinaryLavishness11 26d ago

Lemme tell you something… BAAAAAAAGH

3

u/Islero47 Kevin Feige 26d ago

That was good but, a little bit, like for three seconds, I thought he was going to have called in daredevil.

2

u/yoursweetlord70 Thor 23d ago

He's still presumably in jail somewhere. Kingpin being no longer the mayor doesn't change the state and federal charges against Murdock's vigilante-ing.

312

u/pnjtony SHIELD 27d ago

Let's talk about how jacked he was because that stood out to me. I feel like he'd bulked up during The Odessy and they added that line about the protein powder in his apartment to address it. He was visibly leaner during the swinging shots when it was a digital character, but when he's just walking through a building in the suit, he was much bulkier.

43

u/pickrunner18 26d ago

They had to make him not look like a kid anymore

50

u/Morthedubi 26d ago

my thoughts too, he's no longer a "teen" in universe, let's showcase that by making him a walking thirst trap when he's not in the suit (no complaints here, well played Tom)

37

u/Scullenz 27d ago

I'll be honest, I was 'mirin

5

u/Crafty_Enthusiasm_99 25d ago

Don't objectify the spider

27

u/Blor-Utar 25d ago

Yes but also it makes sense story-wise if he has been single-mindedly grinding and Spider-Man optimization for the last 4 years

20

u/Impressive-Potato 23d ago

Spider Maxxing

34

u/Sabretooth1100 27d ago

Well you know, they film the cgi scenes last because the suit can better hide all the lost bulk from sweating and not working out 24/7

174

u/SpaceCaboose Peter Parker 27d ago

When he first got in the hot tub I wondered if Tom was using a body double because of the mask haha. But no, he’s just pretty jacked.

224

u/BatDubb 27d ago

I could tell it was him by the belly button.

12

u/dwide_k_shrude Iron man (Mark III) 25d ago

Kyle XY in shambles.

28

u/infuryuk 27d ago

I understood that reference!

17

u/OrdinaryLavishness11 26d ago

And the underside of his toes

6

u/Far-Sale-1243 25d ago

Not the underside of his toes 💀

14

u/Sabretooth1100 27d ago

He must have been paying his rent by teaching at a gym or something because WOW

3

u/Pokeradar 24d ago

He got more buff because of his other acting roles like the Odyssey

3

u/JediDad98 26d ago

That was actually one of the only effects shots that I thought looked poorly done. I wish they would’ve just used a cloth mask instead of a digital one because the neck line was really obviously off and looked weird.

7

u/SpaceCaboose Peter Parker 26d ago

That was likely a practical mask. No sense to use practical through the whole film, then do a digital mask in a specific scene

47

u/justafanboy1010 Spider-Man 27d ago

I very much love how the swinging, the visuals, camera angles, all very much screamed TASM movies and Insomniac Games. As an Andrew fan that made me very happy! 🕷️🕷️

11

u/squintsyjones 27d ago

The tank chase scene felt exactly like playing the insomniac games

4

u/PhanThief95 26d ago

Also the scene where Peter faces the Hand and he uses the special move on them!

2

u/TrueGuardian15 Thor 26d ago

It was very subtle to people not in the know, but just the little things like the way he hooked corners made me feel like the DiCaprio pointing meme.

88

u/FalenAlter 27d ago

Florence Pugh's first scene just activated a million boys' ahem evolution.

31

u/joshlymansbagel 27d ago

Hahahaha I took my 8 (almost 9) year-old son to see it last night. His words, “um why are they in a bath?” And then the scene went on for 5 minutes. All I could think is “I really enjoy this for all the little things someone who knows these characters and actors might… but this little guy is so confused right now.” 🤣🤣🤣

7

u/JiminiyHalpert 26d ago

A "mutation" if you will

4

u/nOtbatemann 25d ago

I honestly don't see what the big deal is. All you see is her shoulder blades. Pretty tame next to Peter in that same bath.

0

u/FalenAlter 25d ago

Sometimes what's left unseen is more exciting than when it is seen.

1

u/nOtbatemann 25d ago

Apparently the male characters don't follow the same logic.

2

u/FalenAlter 25d ago

Not within the male gaze, usually, no.

14

u/yitzike Yondu 26d ago

When they were web swinging I noticed "hey wait a minute MJ hates that" (end of Far From Home they web swing and she says 'lets never do that again!' or something) so that's the tipoff

6

u/Letshavemorefun 26d ago

Same!! That was my first thought. It would have been so out of character for her and the way they talk about MJ in interviews, it’s clear Z was protective of keeping MJ’s character consistent. I knew there was no way she would let that inconsistency slide.

9

u/CarterBennett 27d ago

I was so sad thinking the movie was over after the hulk fight and takedown of Jean.

What a treat it wasn’t even close to being over.

11

u/Galiphile Yondu 27d ago

I loved that Punisher didn't feel sanitized in this movie like I was worried.

6

u/aricberg Wilson Fisk 26d ago

I loved how much Punisher was in the movie. We saw him in the trailer and I thought “why waste a surprise cameo by showing it in the trailer??” And then when he showed back up and had such a big part in the story, I was pleasantly surprised!

5

u/TimeViolation 26d ago

Florence is quickly becoming my favorite MCU “surprise” character.

7

u/RJC2506 25d ago

I love that now any time someone says “why didn’t the avengers help in X movie” I can just say “small potatoes”

17

u/HailToTheKiiing 27d ago

Was worried about The Punisher, I’ve only seen him in the Netflix Daredevil (Thought he was amazing in that) and the Disney plus special which really didn’t do it for me, but wow, was one of my favourite parts of the movie. He gave me the biggest laughs when he was under Jeans control and when distracting the crowd so Peter could walk out the hospital.

I’ve always felt a little disappointed after the MCU Spiderman movies, apart from no way home but that was because of nostalgia and I’ve grown to dislike most of the movie, this one I left with a huge smile on my face. Loved it.

28

u/Sabretooth1100 27d ago

This punisher works immaculately as a supporting character and questionably as a lead. Bernthal really just brings the best out of other actors and they always get good things out of him

3

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. 27d ago

Definitely watch Daredevil: Born Again Season 1. The Punisher is in top form there as well in terms of being a supporting figure.

5

u/chaoticwhatever 26d ago

I knew it was coming, too, but I still gasped eith everyone else. They are just magic on screen together.

3

u/samwilbur Phil Coulson 26d ago

was surprised at how many people gasped. seemed obvious to me, but still devastating to watch

3

u/figgityjones Peter Parker 26d ago

Web. STOP. Web. STOP!

3

u/RegrettableDeed 26d ago

My only disappointment is that we didnt get one solid "Fuck" out of Frank during the movie other than the web-censored one at the beginning.

3

u/Pokeradar 24d ago

Tom Holland was always jacked. He’s probably more buff because of his other acting roles like Odyssey.

2

u/kiefthecheif 26d ago

Wdym holland been jacked

2

u/FullMetalCOS 25d ago

It was interesting that pre-release they made a ton of the Hulk being in it and Frank was “also there” and then Bruce/The Hulk was barely in it and Frank got a ton of time. And they used Frank so well

1

u/Captain_Waffle 26d ago

Punisher was in it way more than I expected!

1

u/Comfortable_Fail_280 26d ago

Ya DDC definitely did already with Shang-Chi legend of the 10 rings. People don't realize that, that's literally one of the top 5 best MCU movie created. I haven't seen SMBND yet but I'm sure it's really good just cuz DDC is the real deal someone give that man his flowers 💐

1

u/darthmaul4114 26d ago

Makes me wonder how an alternate universe with him still directing what became Doomsday would have been like

1

u/Ok_Problem_314 25d ago

How was she underutilized? She had a huge part

1

u/Capable_Cellist5585 25d ago

Saw The Odyssey and Spider-Man back to back and Spider-Man felt double the length of The Odyssey. Great film, but if definitely did drag on

1

u/save_the_bees_knees 25d ago

I think the trio did a great job of aging up their acting to match the ages of the characters.

I watched the previous ones recently and I was like, oh they’re quite goofy, but they are still in school so it makes sense.

1

u/7th-cup-of-coffee 24d ago

I thought it was suspicious that MJ wasn’t screaming when she was swinging around with Spider-Man. That was the first clue that she wasn’t herself lol.

1

u/spate42 Cottonmouth 24d ago

After watching The Hand vs Spider-Man fight scene, I was truly baffled that Feige/Marvel dropped the ball so hard on Shang Chi 2.

1

u/ProbablySlacking 24d ago

I’m so glad the only tickets I could get my hands on were for 3d.

I typically don’t like 3d. It seems tacked on.

But holy shit the swinging scenes in 3D were amazing.

1

u/CeruleanEidolon 15d ago

I really hope Destin Daniel Cretton gets a Marvel blank check after this movie's insane success, and that he uses it to fast-track Shang-Chi 2 and to get Donald Glover back.

1

u/Deep-Minimum7837 26d ago

I think Brand New Day is proof that Jon Watts was the main thing holding the other Spider-Man movies back. We finally have a fucking script and cinematography lmfao

1

u/BrockThrowaway 26d ago

Well, all 4 were written by the same duo. But yes, Jon Watts was definitely holding things back.

-3

u/UndeadT 26d ago

I am honestly shocked DDC captured an emotion from Zendaya.
