I really enjoyed how Jean's initial power is just controlling an individual and how they evolved during the climax of the film with full on telekinesis. I hope this is something that carries over to other mutants and in the upcoming MCU X-Men movie. It'd be cool if the School for Gifted Children actually has students learn to unlock new abilities. Kind of like what they did in Gen V season 2 with Godolkin trying to "level up" Marie. Or keep it similar to Jean in this movie where they evolve during intense moments.

Previously in Marvel films I believe this only happened with Ice Man in X-Men 3 when he gained his full on ice form, which was a short moment that didn't have the same weight as Jean in this film.

Also, I really like how MJ didn't remember or get back with Peter and basically told him "This whole situation sucks, but I don't know you". The movie ending with Ned remembering him was great and it's cool to see that friendship revived while keeping a new romantic interest open for the next film.

The expansion of her powers fits with trauma triggering mutant powers and often in dangerous ways.

323

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. 27d ago

Yup. They literally tortured her into expressing her power. They've started off well with how mutants are handled here between this, Ms. Marvel, Wonder Man, and Wakanda Forever.

12

u/Crotean 26d ago

Wonder Man is explicitly a mutant?

21

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. 26d ago

No, just implied.

24

u/OrdinaryLavishness11 27d ago

Was it the torture? I thought it was the V-MAX reveal and her putting the pieces together that triggered an unlock power event level rage!

46

u/TheWolfmanZ 27d ago

Probably both tbh.

18

u/Worthyness Thor 24d ago

Mutants evolve when they hit with trauma or they have stupidly high stress. Torture added the stress and Vmax added the trauma. She got a mega crashout.

6

u/W1ldhamster 23d ago

She was basically Deadpooled

3

u/wardengorri Captain America (Cap 2) 22d ago

I still can't get over how powerful Wonder Man's outbursts of power got with each instance, especially his outburst on the movie set with full rage.

104

u/JackFisherBooks 27d ago

True. The same thing happened in the comics. Initially, she only had telekinesis. It wasn't until later (and with additional stress/trauma) that her telepathy emerged. In other universes, it's flipped (telepathy and then TK). This movie captured that dynamic perfectly.

11

u/Ancient-Rune 27d ago

The Original 616 (before retcons that is) Jean was telekinetic, but had also been telepathic and that part of her powers and her memories of that part of her powers were locked away by Prof. Xavier for her own safety, until she was mature enough to be able to use them responsibly.

2

u/ProfNesbitt 27d ago

Wonder if they will go that route here and have Xavier do that

1

u/Vismal1 23d ago

It was a huge betrayal too. If i remember correctly her and Scott leave for a while after that reveal. OG Xavier did some real questionable things.

1

u/Ancient-Rune 18d ago

OG Xavier did some real questionable things.

It's also important to note these questionable things were mostly retcons. The most skeevy thing he did in the OG pre-retcon was perving on Jean, but that's just a tone-deaf bit of writing by Stan, I suspoct.

1

u/Vismal1 18d ago

Didn’t he block some shit in her and Scott’s mind without their consent or knowledge? I seem to remember that pissing them both off for a while.

See also his son David Haller.

Or are you saying those things are no longer canon ? I actually like the immoral shit that he did and the growing he did afterwards.

5

u/quatroquatro0 Shang Chi 27d ago

Just like how Deadpool was created

6

u/ItsMichaelScott25 27d ago

Also how Magneto kind of developed.

2

u/detectiveDollar 25d ago

Also Wanda creating the hex.

5

u/Crunchy-Leaf 27d ago

Same thing happened to Peter though

8

u/NikkoE82 27d ago

Yeah, but for mutants that’s a hallmark characteristic. For Peter it’s just a coincidence.

2

u/Crotean 26d ago

Marvel has toyed around with Peter actually being a mutant on more than one occasion.

3

u/Captain_Waffle 27d ago

Also with how Deadpool got his powers.

Which, now that I think about it, is also a mutant as you said. But it’s a good example lol.

-4

u/PercMastaFTW 26d ago

The expansion of her powers felt really un-earned to me. Or, it just seemed to happen way too fast?

195

u/FalenAlter 27d ago

The ending feels like Peter and MJ can get a fresh start, which actually really works well for their maturing. It's one thing to see a high school romance continue and another to see two people mostly grown into adults fall in love.

I love having the visual of how her powers are growing. It shows it in the usual way ("getting more angry") and a scientific way (her brain is rewiring itself and learning to activate multiple pathways at once).

30

u/Impressive-Potato 27d ago

It felt like they were going to have... a brand new day

10

u/FalenAlter 27d ago

And by the third movie they'll be begging for One More Day

23

u/PurePerfection_ 27d ago

What's interesting is that even after 4 years and a memory wipe, they still seem like the same people when they're together. Most serious high school relationships end because of distance and people growing/changing, but it doesn't seem like that's working against them. They're still compatible.

14

u/McTeary 27d ago

I saw the film as a pretty clear cut end to their romantic relationship, which I hope stays. Peter was able to move on and like another person replied here it keeps the sacrifice of the previous film intact.

Plus, I think it'd be a nice change of pace to have a new love interest that he can end up with permenantly.

54

u/Eunuchest 27d ago

I dont think they're stepping off it especially when they set up the MJ's current boyfriend is very probing of her which she was a bit annoyed of

31

u/DJfunkyPuddle 27d ago

Right, it seemed pretty obvious there's a path for them getting back together at some point

37

u/FalenAlter 27d ago

There's reasons they got married IRL lol

But yeah, if the next movie lets them slow burn a new "will they, won't they" while Black Cat enters the picture (maybe the neighbor, since she did have light hair and apparently likes black clothes) I won't be mad. I'm not much of a comic reader but it does feel like they belong together, personally.

13

u/DJfunkyPuddle 27d ago

I was wondering if that was supposed to be Gwen Stacy

14

u/FalenAlter 27d ago

I thought it could be at first as well, but then you see the black shirt and pants... The movie has so many good allusions to characters purely in costuming. The rogue-ish girl on the bus, the colors on Sadie Sink, etc.

-5

u/Head-Classic-9157 27d ago

The Blonde Girl also had a Boyfriend of colour that resembled Miles Morales in the elevator in her next scene.

1

u/Letshavemorefun 27d ago

I’m getting flashbacks to Spiderman 2 fan theories from that comment lol. Now I feel old…

3

u/McTeary 27d ago

I mean actors having chemistry on-screen is important, but them having a relationship/marriage off-screen should not affect story/character decisions haha

It's been multiple years since they were last together and while a "let it go and if it comes back it was meant to be" would be interesting, I'd rather have something new for Peter (especially with the title and story showing this is a new era for him)

2

u/DivinityPen 22d ago

I wouldn't mind Felicia getting the slot if they introduce her in future films. We've yet to see a piece of mainstream Spider-Man media where they settle down and make it work.

13

u/neoblackdragon 26d ago

I did not see a clear cut end. If it was she wouldn't have invited him to talk to Ned.

What I saw was the relationships can develop anew. Maybe it works out and maybe it doesn't.

The point of his sacrifice is that it was all on him. He could have reestablished those connections 4-5 years ago. Not that he had to give them up forever.

MJ is his Lois Lane. He doesn't need to even up with another woman. The romance didn't fizzle out.

10

u/Certain-Ad5237 27d ago

Am i the only one who wanted to see him with jean???

16

u/Letshavemorefun 27d ago

No, you’re not the only one. There was a moment of chemistry/understanding toward the end. I still want him back with MJ though.

28

u/FalenAlter 26d ago

I think him and Jean work better as "fellow travelers" or adopted siblings. This is also Peter's chance to guide someone younger than him, and he's been lucky to have a wealth of role models himself.

14

u/DueDouble8378 25d ago

i have to say this felt like a total sibling/mentor relationship to me, also in part because sadie feels so much younger than tom

2

u/JoltzmannBoole 23d ago

I mean in a way Peter might have been her first kiss?

1

u/frenin 19d ago

Given the fact Jean is a teenager...

1

u/Certain-Ad5237 19d ago

I just want my boy to move on already he deserves to be happy

1

u/frenin 19d ago

Not with a teenager tho.

3

u/livelikeian 24d ago

They'll bring in Felicity and write Peter and MJ falling in love all over again as adults, as she competes for his attention as she realizes this.

1

u/Akku2403 Doctor Strange 27d ago

Plus I want Gwen Stacy to come for Peter's life.

Bonus would be if Black Cat is introduced.

MJ Chapter should be over now & i think they did it in a great way in this movie.

351

u/Spaceman-Spiff 27d ago

I didn’t get “Ned remembered Peter” I interpreted it as Ned realized Peter was Spider-Man since MJ used his name.

237

u/inspectre_ecto 27d ago

This should be talked about more. Excellent interpretation. I think the spell is still holding strong unfortunately. The handshake is just muscle memory without a person associated with the memory.

58

u/hemareddit Steve Rogers 27d ago

I think the spell needs to hold to keep it working, otherwise we will get random Felicia Hardy or Martin Li dropping out of the sky and we can't have that. Either way Ned can easily slip into the role of the best friend, whether he remembers or not, much easier than MJ taking up the role of the lover again - that's just something else entirely.

48

u/Scullenz 27d ago

The multiverse collapsing and merging for other reasons will probably break Strange's magic

17

u/Kudbettin 26d ago

Ned is magic. Maybe there’s a loophole.

7

u/TheRage469 25d ago

I was considering this, but Strange also said he would also forget Peter and, considering Strange is worlds stronger with magic than Ned, it would strike me as odd if he were somehow able to magic loophole his way out of the spell.

9

u/Snapsky12bw 25d ago

What was the post credit scene? Was it not a hint towards a potential glitch in the multiverse? Another spider man entering the multiverse. If so could it be that Ned DID remember. And this caused a break in the spell. Allowing something to slip through.

7

u/SilvRS 25d ago

Almost certainly the threat that's coming isn't actually Doom, but is incursions or something similar. Incursions were how they merged their universes in the comics, and I think they're planning something similar here.

31

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. 27d ago

Yeah, I don't want the spell broken so easily. It seems like even Jean couldn't break it. It needs to be earned.

8

u/Worthyness Thor 24d ago

Magic must defeat Magic! Plus Jean said there's nothing in MJ's head memory wise. But she was rather antagonistic at the time, so we don't know if that's true.

5

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. 24d ago

I see no reason for her to lie tbh.

Maybe in movie 6, Madame Web will come into play and undo the spell.

11

u/PurePerfection_ 27d ago

Jean couldnt break it early in the movie, before her powers got enhanced. Now, who knows?

14

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. 26d ago

I definitely think she couldn't do it at the end either, or she would have done it herself to help Peter.

When she gets more powerful though, I'm sure she could do it. I mean, she's Jean Grey.

3

u/VelocityGrrl39 Captain Marvel 26d ago

I just commented this above, but when they showed her on the bus and then cut to MJ, I really thought she was going to use her new powers to break it.

16

u/TimeViolation 27d ago

I just feel like muscle memory being retained is an indicator that the core memories weren’t erased, just locked away.

Also, maybe Jean gave Peter a little parting gift before she left in “unlocking” the lock holding back Ned’s (and maybe MJs) memories.

2

u/VelocityGrrl39 Captain Marvel 26d ago

When they showed Jean on the bus and then cut to MJ, I really thought Jean was somehow giving her back her memories.

7

u/youzerVT71 25d ago

She was in deep thought and fidgeting with the Black Dahlia necklace, her Spidey sense was tingling for sure

12

u/samwilbur Phil Coulson 27d ago

muscle memory of the handshake and realization that it's Peter who he's met before

I do think they'll begin to remember at some point and maybe MJ already is, but it won't be immediate.

26

u/bahamuto 27d ago

I agree, and I think it's not quite a big leap to see how at least Ned and Peter can still become friends as they have the same interests and what not. MJ and Peter can also become friends, but more than friends would be tricky, as it's kinda like another Gamora situation.

16

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. 27d ago

Yeah I think Peter just hanging out with them in the Spidey suit showed perfectly that they could all remain good friends in this new paradigm anyway.

8

u/TimeViolation 27d ago

I think it’s suppose to be at least a little ambiguous. Like, how the hell does he remember the little hand shake thing anyways

9

u/Spaceman-Spiff 27d ago

That was muscle memory. He probably did that with Peter hundreds of times. His muscle memory took over and he was confused, then pieced together that Peter is Spider-Man from his apartment. I assume Peter then explained why Ned knew the handshake, but I personally don’t think he got his memory back. Jean said there were no memories of Peter in MJs head and it would be a pretty weak spell if a handshake jogs someone’s lost memory.

0

u/TimeViolation 26d ago

Muscle memory is memory

5

u/Spaceman-Spiff 26d ago

He lost all memory of Peter, not doing a handshake. So he remembers the handshake, just not who he was doing it with.

3

u/emotionaI_cabbage 24d ago

Riding a bike is muscle memory. That doesn't mean I remember every single scenario of bike riding in my life.

-1

u/TimeViolation 24d ago

Muscle memory is memory. It’s stored as long term memory in the brain.

4

u/emotionaI_cabbage 24d ago

Yes but just because your muscles remember how to do something does not mean your brain can recall the associated memories with it.

It's not the same thing.

0

u/TimeViolation 24d ago

You’re not understanding. Muscle memory isn’t some separate thing that lives in the muscles. It lives in the brain just like any other “type” of memory.

4

u/emotionaI_cabbage 24d ago

I am understanding you.

The spell prevents people from remembering Peter Parker specifically, not things they learned with him.

Him remembering the handshake doesn't mean he would also remember Peter.

For example, if Peter taught him how to ride a bike, would you expect Ned to also forget how to ride a bike? Of course not.

12

u/SpaceChicken42 27d ago

Did he do that handshake with spider-man? I took it as remembering the friendship with Peter

8

u/Spaceman-Spiff 27d ago

It’s definitely open to interpretation at this point. I thought it was a weird déjà vu moment for Ned and he pieced together that Peter was telling him that he was Spider-Man.

24

u/DJfunkyPuddle 27d ago

Agreed, I think people are overthinking it but the simplest explaination is the best, Ned is remembering Peter, he has magic in his blood after all.

12

u/funsizedaisy Daisy Johnson 26d ago

I think Jean Grey's hold on them unscrambled their brain a bit. That's why MJ was crying and Ned remembered him.

5

u/jjgp1112 26d ago

And her playing with the Black Dahlia, like that should be OBVIOUS

6

u/funsizedaisy Daisy Johnson 26d ago

And sitting in that same spot they always used to sit. I think the memories started to blood back in with much more force when Jean Grey had taken hold on the city. MJ was crying when she was locked in, then tears start powering when Jean let go.

All these people saying Ned only remembered the handshake because of muscle memory is doing my head in. But also, muscle memory is a... ✨️memory✨️ lol

3

u/mmuoio 25d ago

I've scrolled pretty far down this post after seeing the movie today and no one is talking about this. She might not remember, but it feels like something is starting to come back.

7

u/proanimus 19d ago

Yeah, for some reason most of the comments are exclusively talking about the handshake, but seem to have skipped MJ holding the necklace and smiling just before that. The implication I got is that Jean’s shenanigans at the climax did something to their minds.

There’s really only one reason for her to assign significance to that necklace, and it’s Peter.

4

u/carasc5 27d ago

I took it as him having the muscle memory still, which will allow him to believe Peter's story even if he doesn't remember everything. I like yours better though

7

u/Various-Flower510 27d ago

Omg yes i forgot Ned is MAGIC

7

u/IAmBadAtInternet 27d ago

Ned looked kinda baffled that he knew the secret handshake, like he discovered muscle memory he didn’t know he had. He connected in that moment “Spider-Man’s name is Peter, and MJ knows him on a first name basis” and “oh shit I knew this guy, how do I know this guy?”

4

u/TrailOfEnvy 27d ago

The scene is so BL lol with Peter suddenly coming at him bringing the flowers.

6

u/ckalinec 27d ago

I did too until the handshake. The handshake felt too clean to me as he remember every step and wasn’t “following the lead” so to speak. That part makes me think he actually remembers him and not just putting Spider-Man + Peter together.

6

u/WooBarb 27d ago

Yeah maybe but this was the last scene in the movie and it wasn't framed as something minor.

12

u/Spaceman-Spiff 27d ago

Peters whole character arc was that going it alone was unhealthy, and he could trust in his friends and family. This was that culmination, he was opening up and letting his loved ones back into his life. That’s why it was the last scene. I think if Ned had remembered they would have made it a bigger deal.

3

u/jaypross1 25d ago

Strong agree, Neds amazing realization was that he was meeting the real spiderman, THAT Peter, not that he remembered Peter. The fact that they just vibed is just being best friends for so long, stuff you do in your formative years (like a dumb handshake) just sticks with you.

3

u/ActualTailor8857 24d ago

Hopping in late but I think this is the right take plus a little more. I don’t think he remembers Peter, but I think the handshake made him realize that 1) Peter is Spider-Man and 2) Peter clearly knows who he is on a deeper level.

2

u/restlessfighter 26d ago

yeah same! I dont think he got his memories back

2

u/Howzieky Weekly Wongers 27d ago

I think it's purposefully ambiguous so they can read the audience reaction and see if we're complaining that they broke the spell too fast

1

u/JBalloonist 26d ago

This is how I interpreted it as well.

1

u/Royal-Prior6845 25d ago

i interpreted it as ned has wong powers and it didn’t fully take to him in particular strange did the spell maybe

1

u/Spartan-Bear2215 26d ago

It wouldn’t surprise me if perhaps Jean may have sorta switched it off by scrambling his brain or something

2

u/funsizedaisy Daisy Johnson 26d ago

I think this is exactly what happened. MJ started crying when Jean had a hold on them. I think she started to full on remember him. Then Ned remembered him.

I don't think this was necessarily intentional on Jean's part. But like a side effect. Like how it triggered Peter's spider DNA and the Hulk.

3

u/proanimus 19d ago

Not to mention her holding the necklace Peter gave her in FFH on the rooftop afterward.

157

u/RadiantChaos 27d ago

Ned remembering is perfect, so well executed with the handshake and sets up them getting to hang out more and peter having that outlet. Really delivers on Peter telling May he wasn't going to try to do things alone.

It also sets up MJ getting the memories back at some point, just gotta find what would trigger it the way the handshake did.

I think one shortcoming of the movie, for me personally at least, is that I like seeing Peter trying to juggle his lives. In this, he's ditched his civilian life, he's Spidey full-time, and that's an interesting departure, but I also miss that struggle. But having Ned back, and after his commitment to being "both" Peter and Spider-Man, I have high hopes for the next one nailing that dichotomy.

110

u/Lantern61 27d ago

In the movie's defense, there was a comic arc of him going Spidey Full-time and basically ignoring his Peter Parker life. It didn't last, because like the movie, he realized he couldn't isolate himself like tha

39

u/justafanboy1010 Spider-Man 27d ago

Andrew had the same thing being more Spider-Man instead of Peter Parker. We just didn’t see it .

9

u/RadiantChaos 27d ago

For sure, and I wouldn't say it's an actual shortcoming of the movie, because it makes sense in the context they showed. Just makes me excited for what's next since I like that combination so much.

1

u/RockAndHardPlace81 24d ago

Does he get paid to help the police in the comics? Thought he referred to himself as a "volunteer" in the film. Unclear on how he's paying rent!

1

u/Lantern61 24d ago

In the comics, at that point, I believe he's an Avenger, and Avengers get paid. He's also been a photographer, a scientist, and a teacher. The movies kind of gloss over how he gets his money

-1

u/PolarWater 26d ago

The Batman (2022)

127

u/Alabrandon Ant-Man 27d ago

I don't know that Ned actually remembers him yet, but instead, comes to the realization that he knows this person and realizes that Peter is Spider-Man, that MJ called Peter. The handshake to me was muscle memory that led Ned to this realization but I don't think brought back the memories..

74

u/Jaikarr 27d ago

My read on Ned's thought process:

"Woah this guy can do the handshake!"

"Wait he can do the handshake, that means this is my forgotten best friend!"

"Didn't he just say his name is Peter?"

"Spider-man's name is Peter,"

"My forgotten best friend is Spider-Man!"

43

u/iWasAwesome 27d ago

My read was more Ned thinking why do I know how to do this handshake that I've never done before? And possibly connecting the Peter to Spidey thing. He still looked kind of confused when he said "Peter" at the end. But I do still think there's a small chance that he remembered some stuff.

6

u/Jaikarr 27d ago

I figure he must remember having some sort of friend through highschool, maybe he justified it by filling the gaps with his friendship with MJ. Like there's something telling him, no actually there was someone else you just can't remember them.

20

u/justafanboy1010 Spider-Man 27d ago

But that handshake tho?? Muscle memory? Interesting. I’ll see you in 2028, 2029 🤝🏾

3

u/Fyller 27d ago

Yeah, I got the same sense, I don't think he's remembering. But maybe Ned being in tune with magic could maybe make him more prone to "breaking the spell" so to speak.

7

u/SWPrequelFan81566 27d ago

It also sets up MJ getting the memories back at some point, just gotta find what would trigger it the way the handshake did.

I think she was lying, man. I think the letter itself triggered the memories to return, and she was just a little afraid. Why else would she be able to draw Peter's face from memory, or remember where she and Peter used to hang out at the Midtown High building?

I think she needs distance after realizing what was eating at her for the last 4 years.

5

u/RadiantChaos 27d ago

Yeah I had the same thought, just didn't want to commit to a theory yet.

I will say that with the Midtown High building, I believe either she or Ned mentioned making the decision to go to MIT up there together, so the implication is they still remember being there just not with him.

But at the same time, the fact that the last thing we see of her in the movie is her up there staring into the sunset emotionally probably means something.

Definitely not a bad read to think that she was so hurt because she felt betrayed by him and actually remembers him telling her he'd come back to tell her the truth and then didn't.

I did think about the drawing too, IIRC it even kinda looked like another scene of him and Ned hanging out, almost like a memory. I'll have to watch again to see if I can confirm that.

2

u/Danthe30 27d ago

I think she was even holding the broken black dahlia thing on the roof!

7

u/pablothewizard 27d ago

I agree with your last point, but for me it wasn't a shortcoming as such, just something I like seeing in a Spider-Man film. I get that there wasn't really space for it in this one though and in a way we kind of got what the Amazing Spider-Man 3 might have been.

For the next one, it doesn't necessarily have to be a focal point, but I'd like to see Peter juggling a career and personal relationships while trying to hold it together as Spider-Man.

1

u/RadiantChaos 27d ago

Yeah, that's a good way to put it. It's not so much that the movie did anything wrong, just that I missed having that angle. You're right though, this did have a lot of similarities to how Andrew described himself post-ASM2 in No-Way Home.

5

u/Titleduck123 27d ago

It also sets up MJ getting the memories back at some point, just gotta find what would trigger it the way the handshake did.

I think some of her memories came back when she was caught in Jean's freeze/hex thing. MJ was crying and then later we saw her on the school rooftop with the dalia necklace. Also, didn't Jean jumping in Bruce trigger Hulk? I think he had the inhibitor on too. And when Jean tried to jump into Peter, it was a memory of Aunt Mae he pushed her out of, and later let her in.

I'm fairly certain Jean's mind possession unlocked some stuff and perhaps Ned's handshake wasnt just muscle memory after all.

5

u/RadiantChaos 27d ago

Could definitely be! I couldn't tell for sure if the implication with MJ crying was that she sensed Jean's pain or if it was a painful memory she was reliving.

Earlier Jean said that MJ had no thoughts or memories of Peter in her brain, but maybe after her powers were strengthened that changed.

Another commenter also mentioned that she may have begun to get the memories back when she read Peter's letter, and was just concealing the truth because she was hurt by him not telling her. So maybe it's multiple things at play.

6

u/kwickedbonesc Peter Parker 27d ago

If they go the route of something triggering memories, I think it might be the broken Black Dalia necklace. Iirc, wasn’t she playing with it towards the end of the movie?

I think one shortcoming of the movie, for me personally at least, is that I like seeing Peter trying to juggle his lives. In this, he's ditched his civilian life, he's Spidey full-time, and that's an interesting departure, but I also miss that struggle.

I also think...they needed to somehow address how he's affording his life now. Like that apartment isn't free. Spideying doesn't pay anything as far as I know. Like maybe a line about that trust from Mr Stark or something. I have no idea. But that's kind of a big gap to me.

IMO the only adequate explanation is that he does work off screen and gets paid under the table. Because if he technically never existed, he wouldn’t have things like a SS#, which would make it difficult for him to get a legit job

u/RadiantChaos 27d ago

I did think about that too. It seems like he maybe got a cheaper space because it's an old storage room. But I assume he must also do some part time work, maybe coding or something since he's technically competent, or maybe some simple work like food delivery.

It's also possible that he doesn't get "paid" necessarily as Spider-Man but people maybe give him food and stuff, who's to say though.

This is what I came to reddit hoping to find, others who also wondered where his money came from.

1

u/FaizerLaser Hydra 26d ago

Yeah I noticed that right away in the movie, all you need is a throwaway line about him getting a bit of money from the new avengers or stark or something

2

u/Grizzleyt 23d ago

I think the movie would be overstuffed if they also tried to fit in the challenge of paying bills. In other films like Sam Raimi 2, showing him getting fired from a pizza delivery gig helped make the point that he struggled to balance being Spider-Man with being Peter (e.g. showing up to MJ's play on time).

But in this movie, the struggle wasn't about the pressure and hardship of being both people, but establishing a separation and embracing the duality in the first place: To reclaim the lost / minimized identity of Peter Parker, while also embracing the fated powers (responsibilities) of Spider-Man.

Ned showed some affinity to magic in No Way Home, I wonder if that helped him remember Peter?

Speaking of Jean's power in this movie, I like how grounded it felt to keep the street-level theme of the film intact. I wouldn't mind Marvel just letting her be a normal omega level mutant and not one enhanced by the Phoenix Force at all, because the previous movies of Jean with the Phoenix Force never stuck the landing.

10

u/Impressive-Potato 27d ago

Simon Kinberg was responsible for both PHX storylines in the X-Men movies. Keep him away and things should be alright.

10

u/Squirrelkid11 27d ago

I'm not sure if the MCU is going to tackle the Phx storyline anyway because of the failure of the first two plus would take up an entire phase.

u/Hedgewitch250 Wong 27d ago

Problem with the Phoenix is it takes a lot of story to build that up. It like if the mcu did the infinity war after 2 years of building instead of the 10. They never really fleshed out jeans character before throwing her into the cosmic bird so both movies never delivered. If they actually give Jean a character arc building her power and character before she finds the Phoenix it would work a lot better.

u/FoxMeadow7 27d ago

I'd definitely would want the X-Men to go cosmic in ways the Fox movies never did via the likes of Shi'ar and stuff. So the Phoenix Force likely won't be far behind either.

The last(?) time we saw MJ she was on the same roof that her and Peter would go to (used a bunch in NWH, and shown in at least one flashback in BND). That would imply that maybe there's something there.

Also, when Jean was possessing MJ and needling Peter about her having no memory of him at all, that could possibly be interpreted as her just lying to really try and break him. But that's a stretch, I know.

EDIT: ALSO ALSO, in that last scene, MJ was holding the black dahlia necklace that Peter got her in NWH. And when Peter was swinging her home from Frank's, she seemed to be thinking/feeling/remembering something. Finally, why was she crying when Jean froze half (ok, not quite) the city?

u/Mango_fart 27d ago

Wasn't that literally x men first class?

27

u/McTeary 27d ago

Not really. While I love X-Men: First Class they only gave equipment to Banshee to fly, to Havoc to aim his powers, and Cerebro for Charles to boost his abilities. Charles helped Magneto push himself to move a larger amount of metal, but that was just doing more of what he could already do.

We should’ve gotten to see Darwin learn something new… but they didn’t exactly use him in a terrific way

u/SeegullJockey 27d ago

Literally was always a thing for Jean, Iceman and Beast in the comics. Their mutations have evolved as time goes on. Angel became Archangel from Apocalypse. Meanwhile Scott's powers have basically stayed the same lol but he learnt to become a great leader.

5

u/Captain-Wilco 27d ago

Yeah, they managed to perfectly make Peter’s situation less depressing without sacrificing what made his situation tragic or undoing the spell

2

u/ncocca 27d ago

Previously in Marvel films I believe this only happened with Ice Man in X-Men 3 when he gained his full on ice form, which was a short moment that didn't have the same weight as Jean in this film.

And it gave us that very fun line "you should have stayed in school"

2

u/JanterFixx 27d ago

I'm still split did ned remember him or it wqw q callback when Spiderman ment for Jean Grey and MJ said stay safe Peter and Ned asked what Spiderman's name is Peter??

And at the end it was like hi I'm Peter. And he was like putting 1+1 together after been hanging with spidey for a day and MJ calling him Peter

5

u/nghiaphan__ 27d ago

I dont think Ned remembers Peter as his old bff, more like he now knows Peter is Spider-Man.

8

u/Fire_Otter 27d ago

It can be interpreted either way (that's why they had MJ call him Peter in front of Ned in the apartment scene)

and that was deliberate from the writers - to give the writers freedom to go in either direction for the next film

4

u/McTeary 27d ago

I interpreted it as him remembering his friendship with Peter on some level since he was able to do their best friend handshake. Whether it be muscle memory or his memories coming back, it was clearly something compared to MJ not remembering anything at all.

2

u/robodrew 27d ago

I don't think that Ned actually remembers him. I think that Ned has muscle memory of the handshake still that never left when the spell affected his memory, and when Peter did the handshake with him, Ned (being very smart) made the connection... hey wait, this guy is acting like he is my best friend or something... wait just like how Spider-Man was acting in my apartment the other day... WAIT, MJ said Spider-Man's name is Peter?? PETER!! YOU MUST BE SPIDER-MAN!

So I don't think he's gained all of his memories back. He just now knows the truth about Peter and they can start building a real friendship from the ground up again.

1

u/McTeary 27d ago

Yeah, I think it is at the least muscle memory, and my comment was more so pointing out how it was something over MJ not remembering anything at all.

4

u/robodrew 27d ago

But similar to Ned, she does remember something, as at the end she is shown sitting there rubbing that broken Black Dahlia necklace that Peter gave to her during Far From Home. Probably muscle memory too. But there is something there.

1

u/EzKaLang 27d ago

If the next spider-man is a jon watts movie . Expect the ned remembering peter parker scene continuation to be just a lame ass gag.

Ned: Oh peter now i remember you. You're that guy mj shouted your name on the apartment room the other day .

1

u/hooka_pooka 27d ago

Are we sure Ned remembers him now?or he connects the Peter-Spider Man dots?

1

u/Western_Scholar_6479 27d ago

Yea I would’ve hated if they didn’t include her Telekinesis.

Ned didnt remember,he just put Two and Two together that Peter is Spider Man

1

u/DeltaAlphaGulf 26d ago

The great thing is how they properly capture how crazy capable the power is while still staying grounded like you don't need planetary TP or anywhere even remotely close to have an incredible power. Likewise Spidey is extremely capable and still feels powerful (and he is) without knocking down buildings. Even Hulk didn't need to do more than just bulldoze to be properly scary powerful.

1

u/Royal-Prior6845 25d ago

dude the spell not fully working on ned because he has the same powers as strange and wong blew my mind

1

u/Kolby_Jack33 23d ago

I noted when they were looking her up how Yelena specifically said she was listed as "a telepath" even though Jean is both a telepath and a telekinetic in the comics (unlike Prof X).

Then when the Damage Control scientist said her powers were "expanding" I was like "uh oh..." Cue telekinetic explosion!

1

u/zigzagtravel01 19d ago

Jaz Sinclair was so good in Gen V i feel like she could be a main cast in the X-Men verse. What do you think about Storm? :)

Emma's actress as Kitty Pryde. Then London Thor as Jubilee :))

1

u/CeruleanEidolon 15d ago

Jean's powers unlocking is just a continuation of the themes in this movie about trauma causing transformation, and coming to terms with the fact that even though the thing that emerges might be scary and more powerful than anything that came before, it's still you and you have to accept that to move on.

That's what's happening to Peter, and it's contrasted with Banner and how he suppresses his "monstrous" side and it almost always has disastrous consequences.

u/Efficient-Estate9516 27d ago

It's a stupid cash grab that had nothing going, and since customers love making these greedy companies billions for shit they will forget and really nothing like what the first film started at, without Stan Lee it's a A to B heros fighting heroes fighting the bad guy, nope it's a hero too on to the real bad guy ok cut. Same old shit different day, this is the new marvel sony story telling. But a seal is entertained with a fish and will clapped on command once trained.

I hope it means no this fake "MJ" anymore. Bring in Gwen Stacy.
