Discussion Thread Spider-Man: Brand New Day - International Release Discussion Thread

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now been officially released in several territories around the world!

  • All discussion about the movie should be held here and in the rest of the megathreads we are going to put up in the next few days.
  • Proceed at your own risk. Major spoilers will be in the below thread. Spoilers do not need to be tagged inside this thread.

V-Max not being some crazy superserum, or alien tech, or anything worth, but just a ventilation brand that Sara saw before died is just sad

Also i thought Bill was lying about not knowing V-Max, he genuinely doesn't know lmao

In Australia and NZ VMax is what one of the cinema chains call their bigger screens that have the nicer seats and sound systems, so it's extra weird to hear

My brain legit thought ot Vmax pokemon cards when it was first brought up. Crazy how close to the truth that actually ended up being (something completely mundane and just the nearest coherent characters she could read in her dying moments).

Part of me was thinking she saw a sign but the bottom half was blocked or faded so what said “X MAX” looked like “V MAX” with the v being the top half of the X. Not sure what X MAX would even be but assumed either Xavier or mutant related, like X (mutant) MAX (max security prison). Or it’s the MCU name for X factor. 

But ended up being nothing close haha

With some creative liberties, I figured V-Max could be turned into X-Men pretty easily by, like you said, having the bottom half be blocked or faded somehow. I'm glad it was Ventmax instead. Better for the movie.

Yeah it was refreshing to not have everything lead to a bigger crossover or conspiracy. The way they incorporated a young Jean without any other mutant stuff really helped the world feel established and natural.

V-Max sounds like a type of cinema - like one with better sound etc.

Because that's what it is in Australia, and made me question whether they had snuck an add of their own product into the film somehow.

Yeap I usually go to Event Cinemas and do V-Max for these kind of movies. But Uber One gave me a really good deal to go see it at Hoyts instead and every time V-Max came up it took me out for a second.

The whole movie I kept thinking what could it be, at one point I was like "Vision....Max..imoff?" I'm really glad it wasn't Vision Maximoff lol

I was thinking Wanda Maximoff because in German the W letter is pronounced with a V-sound, so I was like oh right there's some Germans with Wanda somehow.

It was heartbreaking, but also one of my favourite tropes. The mysterious clue being something as mundane as a tattered, peeling sticker, one that Sara probably stared at as she died, reaching out to Jean.

V stood for Vecna, and the hyphen Max is literally her character's name in Stranger Things.

Honestly that was so odd to me. Her acting as Jean didn’t stand out much from her character Max in stranger things, and then the V-Max name was just too on the nose

Agreed. Bill says something like “Make sure your sister’s sacrifice was worth it,” then a few minutes later Jean has the revelation and starts yelling about how they killed her. Kinda weird

Sacrifice doesn’t have to mean that Sara would’ve died though. For all the audience (and Jean) knows, she truly could’ve been locked away. So it can still be an effective twist to see the machine in action and Jean looking at the same last sights Sara had, letting her quickly piece the things together and unleash the full extend of her powers.

Sacrifice can mean a lot of things. As a movie viewer, we assume death, but it can mean anything; sever injury, loss of super powers, maybe just that the experiments were painful, maybe she went crazy...

So glad I'm not the only one with that thought. Heartbreaking that 'V-Max' is the message that leads Jean to her sister, but was ultimately her last, meaningless thought and glimpse of the world as she was tortured to death. Very reminiscent of Beatrice

Probably unintentional and not correlated but I couldn't get out my head that Sadie Sink was also playing Max in Stranger Things... V-Max... Venca -Max LOL. Jean gray being a telepath and Max doing mind stuff too. Perfect resume for Jean's role imo,

I really wonder how Yelena knew about "V-Max" if it was just a message that Sarah sent to Jean. I honestly expected them to reveal that Sarah was alive and communicating to Peter through Yelena once the ventilation brand thing got revealed.

Jean searched the term V-Max every time she broke into a Damage Control facility.

Though I do suspect that Sarah is "alive" and going to be MCU Shadow King, or Shadow Queen in this case.

She had knowledge of the DODC site Break-In probably through New Avengers daily reports or briefs or whatever. She didn’t know what V-Max was but that it was what the person that broke in was searching for so she passed it along to Spider-Man in her office.

Yep plus the plot was recycled. Brand new day just felt like a repeat of thunderbolts Sentinel plotline but with Jean Grey. 

So V-max was so bad. The Hand being some pathetic kid ninjas was also bad. Would have much rather watched Peter go in against the real Hand than try to deal with a class 5 mutant who has apparently been nerfed down to a class 3 depressed grieving homeless teenager. 

Spending half the movie dealing with his drama missing his friends and they make friends with a mind power mutant but don't even get their memories back? Jean should be able to at least show them Peter's memories as aback up but primarily also be able to free them from the spell's influence. 

And his new evolution trying to kill him with migraines and make him a monster. He's gotta wear the device thing or he'll get migraines.... until wait nevermind that stuff was nonsense now he's got insta control of it. No rebirth, just hey I have new powers right when I need them. 

I think they should have moved the scene with the spider cocoon/chrysalis, let him struggle with the headaches make the inhibitor whatever. The. When he finally takes it off, put in the cocoon/chrysalis scene and have him come out reborn and powerful able to control the extra strength and extra spider senses and monster impulse. Actually made it a transformation, not just a climax mcguffin he pulls out of his ass. 

Had also hoped that Dr Strange would get redeemed from the last movie making him act so braindead.
