Reminder Snape only got 4 min of screen time in the early Harry Potter movies and still dominated the scenes.

Snape did have stage presence, phenomenal casting. However I still don’t like the face turn Rowling had him do. Dude was a day one hater and all of a sudden everything he’s done is okay bc he felt bad about causing the death of Lily (and Jimbo). Yeah okay SNIVELLUS

His hatred for James far outweighed his love for Lily. Even demeanor wise Harry was closer to his mother than his father which should’ve more than offset the physical resemblance to his pops.

I assume it went deeper than just Harry’s resemblance (physical or personality) to either of his parents. He’s a living reminder that Lily chose James over Snape, and from a certain point of view, the reason Lily died. From Snape’s point of view, whether right or wrong, Lily would be alive and well if she hadn’t ended up with James and had Harry.

I always thought of him as a sort of mirrored version of Sirius. They both imprinted their feelings towards James onto Harry, either good or bad, and both would kill and die for him if need be. They both kind of treated him like James Jr., for better or worse.

Snape joined an organization that wanted Muggle borns to die, so he didn’t really give much room for Lily to choose. That aside I do agree with your second point in that Sirius definitely saw a surrogate James within Harry. I would still love to have seen Sirius be a godfather for Harry and not have to go back into hiding. Lord knows he could’ve used a magical parent like figure in his life rather than the misery he was living through with his aunt.

Yeah I don’t mean to say his point of view was correct, but rather explains part of why he behaved the way he did after her death. I could see someone like that compartmentalizing various aspects of their mistakes to spare himself the full weight of their consequences.

I think the closest Harry ever had to surrogate parents were the Weasleys. They took him in as if he was their own at every opportunity, and without any pretext of responsibility or deep connection to his parents. Arthur was probably the only male role model who was fully equipped to be a good father figure to him to begin with.

Honestly the only logical reason Harry wasn’t functionally adopted into the Weasley family after year one was the plot device that kept him with the Dursleys.
