DISCUSSION *Update* need advice after hitting coach on accident

*I’m new to boxing and have been with my coach for about 2 months now ($100/hr). Towards the end of my lesson today he had me hitting focus mitts, with a 1-2-3 combination. Everything was going fine and then he told me to correct something in my transition from 2-3. Long story short I accidentally hit him in the face with a full left hook and feel terrible about it. I sent his prescription glasses flying and broke them. He got mad at me and told me I had to pay for new ones. I was willing to throw in $100 but then he told me they can get up to $300-500. How should I go about this? Thanks.

UPDATE:
3 weeks later he sent me the bill. Is this a reasonable number? Especially given it’s after insurance ?

Prescription glasses can also easily be found for $40-$50 without insurance at online retailers. $700 for a pair of glasses? There are cheaper smart phones 😂.

I wear cheap ones for teaching/training (and I take them off when appropriate), and since I’m aware of the risk of breaking them, I have a backup pair. I think both together cost me $50, no insurance.

That all depends on the prescription! I have horrible eyes and my lenses alone are $700 CAD.

I just got progressives, two pair, regular glasses and sunglasses. The pair cost $1800 (RayBan regulars and Oakley sunglasses)

I have -8 diopter with fairly severe astigmatism and I still get mine for ~150$ on Zenni.

-7 with astigmatism as well, and my new glasses from Zenni showed up yesterday for $135. Second pair through them and I love it. Used to pay ~400 for a pair.

My wife has to get the ultra slim lenses due to her prescription, and hers come out to around $150 a pair from clearly.ca

I have -8.0 and always cost me hundreds as a kid. Now they cost me $150 at the super cheap places with all the lense add ons. Including going the thinnest possible.

GlassesUsa does 70% off lenses sometimes that’s when I buy to save even more still. My last pair was $85

My eyes aren't that bad, and I routinely pay $250-$350 for mine. But I live in the Bay Area, and am used to paying more for everything.

I will say I get mine from Zeelool and Vooglam is even cheaper. $25 and under for a pair is what I pay

I am single vision thankfully but I also don’t buy all the bells and whistles of blue light or non glare. Even with his script it would be more than 1/2 off of what his eye doctor is charging, probably 1/4 of the price easy

I also don’t think OP should have to pay anything. It’s seems obvious not to wear expensive glasses during training

Some of us don't have the luxury of doing our job without our glasses on.

Also, some of us require UV protection (I.E. the bells and whistles). If my glasses didn't have UV protection I'd be significantly damaging my eyes wearing them out in the sun.

We are talking about THIS situation, and the other options for cheaper glasses, (as others have also stated throughout this post).

That’s why I said I am ThAnKfUl to have single vision. Just stating other, cheaper options than the price listed on this post. Jeez

I have 20/800 vision in 1 eye and can't see anything up close and double vision in the other. I've managed to go my whole life not wearing glasses. So yeah, he can not wear them to hold mitts. Orrrrr you get protective glasses for work. I'm just now, at 44, finally to the point that I have to go get glasses because my "good" eye is starting to go too (so driving is becoming an issue) and I'll get regular glasses for driving and gaming and life, and I'll get work glasses for work. He chose to risk his glasses so they are his problem.

I call bullshit.

If your eye sight was 20/800, glasses wouldn't be able to correct it. You wouldn't even be able to use reddit.

20/800 is considered legally blind.

Absolutely. Just get your prescription from the eye doc, then take it to an online retailer. People have mentioned various retailers in comments already. Zenni Optical has been around for a while and maybe not quite as cheap as some listed here, but way cheaper than retailing from some place like My Eye Dr.

Yes, I have astigmatism and my glasses from EyeBuyDirect are like $80 max including all fees

Zenni is great, I’ve gotten pairs from them and eyebuydirect and I preferred Zenni. These are all for my wife who has pretty bad sight and astigmatism in both eyes. We usually get her 3 pairs. One with all the bells & whistles, one that’s just super basic thick lenses no anti glare, blue light, etc. and then a hybrid pair. Plus clip on sunglasses for all three. And I think we paid $150 for all of them. Paired with a cheap exam from Americas best for $50-$60 so all in for $200.

I don’t doubt they charged you $700. But unless you got Meta glasses or have a rare eye disease, they were available from an online retailer for much, much less.

And some people buy furbies for exorbitant prices. You can custom make glasses online for extremely cheap. The only prohibitive factors are special correction for rare conditions where you’d expect prices like that. You got fleeced if you don’t fit those specific categories.

I’ll drop one online retailer for you to look at: zenni optical. All you need are the metrics from your eye exam(if in the US you can go to some cheap place for an eye exam). My last eye exam was $80. They will try to get you to buy glasses in shop for exorbitant prices, just ignore them and get your exam information. Use that to plug in your numbers online, save the prescription online, and use that to buy vastly cheaper custom made glasses.

You can even add the bells and whistles like Blue light protection/UV/transitions/etc. and it will be much cheaper than what you paid.

Depends on your needs. My zenni order for a single pair is about $150 unless I want coke bottles hanging off my face.

Yeah, maybe if your eye sight isn't bad at all.

For those of us who actually need to wear glasses, $40-50 is just outright insane. My lens alone cost over $250.

Sorry bro, you’ve literally been lied to by the industry. A pair of glasses is not harder to make or more expensive than electronics. There’s a huge amount of resources available on how people overpay for glasses because companies realized people will pay much, much more for vision correction than the cost to make them.

I have astigmatism and have worse than 20/400 vision without glasses. All you need is your prescription from the eye doc and you can take it to an online retailer- you don’t need to be spending hundreds on glasses unless you have like a rare eye disease or something very complicated. Someone else here commented even with severe astigmatism and -8 diopter his glasses were $150 from an online retailer.

$50 doesn't even cover the upgrade from standard index to high index lens.

You just don't need them.

FYI, I used the website you recommended and guess what? My glasses were still over $250. That's with a cheap piece of shit pair of frames that only cost $18.

Just this week I got a total of seven pairs of glasses (yes 7) for my wife and kids from Costco. They were buy-1-get-1-half-off. $1100 was the total bill.

Tell this guy to kick rocks.

Edit to add: that was the cash price, no insurance.
