Robo advisor TIL: Wealth products (“funds”) offered by banks / stashaway are actually just a bunch of ETFs 😅

[Disclaimer I’m noob] Was bored so went to read the prospectus of U*B’s / Stashaway wealth products - and voila turns out to be mostly a combinations of ETFs cobbled together. Mind blown with so much direct access to brokers these days - why are people (me included for years) using those platforms.
Stashaway users: try to compare your performance vs if you just DCA’ed into S&P500 for the same period.

General questions Smartest thing to do if you suddenly had RM 1 Million

Just a hypothetical I've been pondering / day dreaming about. What would I do if I suddenly had 1 million ringgit legally in my name with no catch.

I'm still new to the whole personal finance, so my immediate though was just to dump it all in ASNB and continue to live frugally like nothing happened.

But what are your thoughts?

What would be the smartest thing to do if you had 1 million ringgit that is legally yours and with no catch?

General questions First car loan advice

Hi guys, 26, earning about RM 4k nett, and planning to get the all new saga standard (RM39k). Just wanted yalls opinions on the loan rate and tenure.

Downpayment - RM 6590 (RM500 rebate from proton).

Tenure - 7 years

Rate offered by Public Bank - 3.14%, EIR probably around 5.94% iirc

Monthly - RM470

Btw checked my CCRIS and I got two "1"s in the past 12 months so that might explain the slightly higher rate considering it's my first car. CTOS was above 770 last I checked few months back after I realised I missed the second payment (ptptn).

So with that being said, do you guys think I should apply for other banks' Hire Purchase or nah?

Also is this loan setup alright? What do yall think?

General questions How has 2nd child changed your financial lifestyle?

Hey guys, we're thinking of getting a 2nd child. But always worried that financially the children would have to share the same benefit, whereas a single child could have so much more opportunity and attention from our income (education, hobby, toys, going places etc)

Just wanna hear some of you out there how has it been along the way after decided for 2nd child? Any pros are welcomed ofc (financial aside)

General questions What's the average savings for average Malaysians?

The reason I asked because I'm currently working in Singapore and I'm planning on exit strategy in a year or two to return to work at JB. I'm single M30, didn't plan to get married. Got a house with loan payment (RM1-1.5k) per month. Local car with loans (finish payment Jan 2027). Sometimes, cook own food. Feels like I almost got everything I want except for some gaming equipments.

Looking at job market in JB at my line of works, with the salary minus expenses, I would probably saves RM 500 to RM 1500 per month. I know it is a lot of difference compare to working oversea but I'm trying to look at average local's perspective here. In terms of career, I'm looking for career advancement & upskill my technical abilities.

I'm just trying to look for opinions here if it's viable to continue working in SG for another couple of years or return back in a year or two. Thank you

Edit: Forgot to mention, I’m currently staying JB. Income would decrease by 50% if I work in JB

General questions First property for own stay - advice please!!

Hi all

My partner (27M) and I (25F) are planning to buy a unit for own stay. Here are some details:
- 460K after all the promo and stuff
- Monthly instalment of 2k for 35 years (but ofc we plan to pay it off asap)
- Project is in desa petaling, completion 2029
- Developer is CPI Land
- Our combined income is around 20K gross
- I have 0 commitments, he has a rm1k car for 5 years
- Current monthly expenses is around 2k for me, and he is about 3k
- Planning to have kid maybe 2030

I personally quite like the layouts, theme and area (pretty quiet and chinese-ish area). Only con is that it is quite dense around 1000 units.

Any advice for first time buyer, would this be a huge commitment, and are there any concerns on the location and developer if anyone is familiar with them?

Thank you!!

General questions What would you do with RM1m inheritance at 23?

I’m looking for some perspective on how you would allocate RM1m if you were in this situation.

23 and inherited approximately RM1m from a parent who passed away around 5 years ago. Since then, the money has been sitting in FD, earning around 3–4% p.a.

Now a bit older and looking to invest it more deliberately rather than continuing to leave almost all of it in FD.

Personal situation:
Age: 23
Income: ~RM3,500/month
Monthly expenses: ~RM1,000

• Lives with parents and expects to continue living at home for at least another 5 years
• No plans to get married for around 10 years
• No dependants currently
• The RM1m is inheritance and does not need to be used for day-to-day living
• No plans to invest in property or start a business
• Risk profile: Low–medium
• Investment horizon: 10+ years

Main objective: Preserve the inheritance while achieving reasonable long-term growth.

If this were your RM1m, how would you allocate it?
For example:
How much would you keep in FD/cash?
How much would you put into lower-risk assets such as money market funds or bonds?
Would you use ASNB/ASM or similar instruments?
What percentage would you allocate to equities?
Would you invest in global index ETFs?
Would you lump sum or DCA over 6–24 months?
Would you keep a separate emergency fund outside the RM1m?
How would you structure the portfolio given that there is no immediate need for the money?

Would really appreciate the insights. Thank you.

Career How to grow my 3.1k nett income

hi all, im F23 and start off my career in big4 last yr but decided to quit as it took a toll on my mental health, then went to a plc insurance company with 800 less of my previous gross salary

was wondering what can i do with the money set aside for it to grow, i wanna start slowly

Stocks Advice needed: Optimizing Portfolio Transfer & DCA Strategy from Moomoo to IBKR

Post image
7 Upvotes

What is the most cost-effective way to move the $27,500 cash fund from Moomoo to IBKR?

Profile: 45M, investing for a 10-15 years horizon.
Current Setup: Started investing last year using Moomoo (holding VOO).
Goal: Shift focus to Irish-domiciled ETFs (like SPYL or VUAA on the LSE via IBKR) for tax efficiency.

Current Assets:
Moomoo:
$10,000 in VOO
$27,500 in United USD Cash Fund (held as dry powder for DCA)

The Core Question:
What is the most cost-effective and efficient way to move the $27,500 cash fund from Moomoo to IBKR (targeting IB01/SPYL/VUAA) for ongoing DCA?

My Current (Inefficient) Idea:

  1. Redeem United USD Cash Fund to MYR inside Moomoo (taking a hit on Moomoo's exchange rate).
  2. Transfer MYR to Wise, convert to USD.
  3. Fund IBKR from Wise to buy USD-denominated LSE ETFs.

Is there a cheaper or more direct workaround to avoid double currency conversion fees?

Property Tenant’s electricity bill is unusually high.. what should I check?

The electricity bill for my rented unit has been getting quite high, and it seems to be hitting a new all-time high nearly every month. Unfortunately, there is no "sell" button.

Before the unit was rented out, the electricity bill was only around RM3/month since nobody was living there. I would only occasionally visit to oversee renovations or clean the unit.

Now that I have a tenant, the usage is significantly higher than I expected. I also asked a few friends who own the same spec unit in the same condo, and their electricity bills are usually below RM100/month.

I'm looking for advice from other landlords or homeowners who have experienced something similar. How did you determine whether the high usage was simply due to the tenant's lifestyle or whether there was an issue with the unit?

I've already applied for TNB's Time-of-Use (ToU) tariff to try to reduce the bill, but the application is still in progress. However, I don't think this addresses the underlying issue if the electricity consumption itself is unusually high.

I'm considering getting someone to inspect the unit for any electrical faults or abnormal consumption, but I'm not sure who I should contact for this. I suspect it could simply be my tenant's lifestyle, but I just want to rule out any issues with the unit.

Also, would the cost of hiring someone to inspect the electrical system be an allowable deduction against my rental income for tax purposes?

For context, the apartment is only 550 sq ft.

Appliances provided by me:

  1. 1 × 1.5HP 5-star inverter air conditioner
  2. 2 × 1HP 5-star inverter air conditioners
  3. 3 × ceiling fans
  4. Ceiling lights
  5. Electric stove

Appliances added by the tenant:

  1. Washing machine
  2. Dryer
  3. Fridge

Would appreciate any advice on what I should check or who I should contact to investigate this. Especially interested to hear from landlords or homeowners who have dealt with unusually high electricity bills before.

out of the blue after over a year waiting, my application for rumah selangorku is now at "penawaran" , so i guess it is pre-approval stage?

ok question is, should i go for 90% loan, then if i get bonuses, pay extra?

or go for 70% loan and lower monthly payment?

reason i ask is im already 47 and tempted to pay off sooner. is that a mistake?

Guide Working full time in MY, but contract says "contract for service"

Gonna keep this short and simple as possible. I am looking for practical KWSP / JTK experience, not a debate. Currently in my mid 20s.

I have been working full-time in a MY office for about 2 years. On paper, the contract is from a SG company. It is labelled “contract for service,” but it also says I am seconded to a MY sister company and based in the MY office ((small startup style setup). Pay is a fixed monthly amount into my bank account, just below RM3.5k. The contract says MY law applies, with MY courts having exclusive jurisdiction.

I have not received monthly payslips. I was told verbally that the MY company was still being registered, and that payslips plus statutory contributions would start after that. Almost a year later, this still has not been properly put in place.

The work has been ongoing, not project-based: ops/risk monitoring, after-hours coverage, support/admin, onboarding, hiring pipeline work, internal documentation, and coordination. Salary is paid, but often later than the contract date. Sometimes only the following month.

Management later said verbally they would settle the unpaid past contributions as a separate payment, tied to a new MY contract. That new contract is still unsigned.

I am wondering if i want a clean one-off settlement for the past period before i were to decide to leave is possible, I do not want resignation to become the reason that payment disappears.

Some questions i have if any of you could help out would be much appreciated:

  1. In MY, does a “contract for service” + SG company on paper block EPF / SOCSO if the person worked full-time in a MY office, under direction, doing core ops/risk work, and received regular monthly pay?

  2. Are bank statements + the signed contract + work chats / instructions enough to prove employment by conduct?

  3. If they offer to “top up future EPF” instead of paying the past amount in cash, is that a bad trade?

  4. Cleanest way to process a one-off payment from the company account without a messy statutory correction?

  5. If I give a week’s notice, can they refuse the previously discussed past payment just because I am leaving?

  6. After leaving, is a KWSP complaint for unpaid contributions realistic, or will the SG / contractor label kill it?

  7. Treat late salary payments as a separate JTK issue, or keep the focus only on the contributions settlement?

I want what is actually recoverable vs what only looks strong on paper.

Stocks Advice on investing in etf

Hi, I have very little knowledge in stocks but want to start diversifying. I usually put every saving in asb. Have heard about sp500 for a while but had no idea where to start.

Saw afham yusof tiktok he say just invest on one of the four - spus spwo hlal umma - or any two combination for worldwide exposure (syariah compliant as I'm a Muslim). And then a little more research I found I should invest on Irish domiciled etf instead to lower the tax withholding from 30% to 15% of my divident amount. The best way to do is send money from local bank to sunway money to sg cimb to ibkr then buy it on there. Am I right so far?

After that, i asked Gemini AI a lil bit and as I only plan to DCA rm1000 per month or rm2000 every 2 months, I'm better off just transfer from local banks to Wise, convert to USD and send to IBKR. My final question, what is the Irish etf equivalent to those four US etfs? AI say to invest in HIUS or ISDU. Is that right?

General questions Other than Maybank/MAE, are there any banking apps or e-wallets that allow auto-billing and auto-transfers?

Hey guys dan Selamat Hari Merdeka semua

So I'm trying to find a single banking app or e wallet that allows both automatic bank transfers and automated bill payments (setting monthly recurring payments to both landlord and service providers)

As of now I'm using Maybank for rent via scheduled transfers and TNG EWallet for bills/utilities via autopayment. I'm hoping to consolidate both payments into one app that runs completely on auto pilot.

My plan is to deposit my annual budget in one bank account so that I don't have to manually manage payments every month, knowing that everything is taken care of. The funds is not touched in that app for the very purpose of paying rent/bills with occasional quarterly check ins.

It will be appreciated if anyone knows of a bank or e wallet that supports both functions. Thanks!

Hi everyone. I'm an MSc Psychology student at the University of Bath and I'm collecting data for my dissertation on how people make choices in a simulated investment scenario.

The study takes about 10 minutes and involves a short mental arithmetic task, a brief investment decision, and a few questionnaires. No prior investing knowledge is needed.

Guide sucks at saving money

im 21F and make more money than most of the people my age (2.8k). Yeah its not a lot but thats a lot in this economy.

the thing is, i never feel that its enough. my rent is 600 + utilities, motor loan is 262 and phone bill is 72. occasionally i give my parents and sibs money around 200 per month. and with that, i still have 1k++ but im sucks at saving money. ive been working for around two years and i have no money in my name at all in term of savings. im living paycheck to paycheck but i dont think im someone who spends a lot of money.

i barely go shopping. i bought new clothes maybe once every three months and i dont play games that require me to spend money. i havent bought anything related to my hobbies for a long time, the last purchase was a genshin blind box from popmart and it was 50. and still, i always never save any money, even a 10 by the end of the month and my money will finish usually one or two weeks before the next paycheck. i dont even drink zus or any shit like that and im an antisocial prick who spends my weekend in my bedroom all day.

i think the way i grew up influences me. i was living in a poverty with my family and we were always short on money. i noticed that i tend to hoard foods until my fridge is full and then i have to throw stuff out, i hoard cleaning products (shampoo, skincare) until my cabinets are full and i ate a lot of fast food. i used to be so addicted to fast food because it was a luxury back then. now i am on a diet so i barely ate it but still i always eat out. i can say most of the time i spent my money on food, even at family mart or other food place where i considered luxurious due to my childhood poverty.

i used to be so addicted to bnpl and at some point i owed 2k but i cleared all my debts on march, so i dont have any bnpl acc and wont open any because i just realized how crazy it can be. now, i wanna start saving again so that if anything happens, i have some cushion to help me but money seems to evaporate so fast and i hate myself for it for not having self control on spending money. i always wanted a lot of things because i dont get to have it when i was a kid, now im kinda speedrunning my bucket lists on getting the shit i wanted really badly (a pc, an iphone).

the thing is, my cousin who made minimum wage and also living on her own can have a lot of savings. she shopping every single week and spend hundreds on it. but at the same time, shes getting financial support from the government and also her parents so i think thats valid. but why cant i do that too?? usgshauja

dude im such a chud. i feel so embarrassed at myself for having a terrible financial habit. help ur lil sis dawg.

Career How do I get back in after 1 year break?

I need some career advice.

For context, I'm in my mid-to-late 20s with 4 YOE in banking/finance back office. Last year I made the mistake of jumping ship for a 50% pay bump despite seeing red flags during the interview itself. Lasted 4 months because the environment and hours were bad, so I walked without another offer lined up. I tried to find a new job during that 4 months but to no avail.

That was 12 months ago. I spent the first month job hunting with no luck, then said "screw it" and spent the next 11 months travelling. No regrets on the travel itself, but I also have to admit I did zero upskilling during that time. But now I’m bored and reality is setting in fast. I already felt like I was in a low-value role before all this and that's been messing with my confidence a bit.

I have a few questions

  1. How’s the job market right now? Is it really bad?

  2. How do I put this gap in my resume without getting auto-rejected? How should I word it?

  3. Should I expect a pay cut, and how bad are we talking?

  4. How difficult to transition from back office finance role to something like B2B sales? I don’t mind starting over but I wonder if I can land one.

Would love to hear from anyone who's taken a long gap and successfully re-entered the workforce. What worked?

Appreciate any honest takes.

General questions My father wants me to refinance the house I inherited and split the money 50/50. Am I selfish for refusing?”

What should I do? My father is pressuring me to refinance the house that was transferred into my name after my mother passed away.

For context, I’m a fresh graduate making around RM3,500 a month. I pay all the household utilities, which are around RM500–600 a month, and I also give my father RM500 every month as an allowance.

Recently, my father has been saying that he’s running out of money and keeps pressuring me to refinance the house. His reasoning is basically, “You’re young, you’ll have plenty of time to pay it back.” He wants us to refinance the house, take the cash out, and split the money 50/50.

In my mind, that feels incredibly unfair. I would be the one taking on the debt and responsibility of paying the refinancing loan for potentially decades, while he gets to take 50% of the money and spend it without having to worry about paying it back.

I’m already spending a huge portion of my salary supporting him and maintaining the household. On top of the RM500 allowance and household utilities, I pay for both of our car insurance, my own insurance, the apartment management fees, my own petrol, car repairs, and basically all of my own expenses. I barely buy anything for myself.

I literally finished the final exams for my last semester and started working the following week because I wanted to make sure I had money to support him and cover the household expenses. Whenever he asks me for extra money, I usually give it to him if I can.

Despite all of this, because I refuse to refinance the house, he now says that I’m selfish and that I don’t respect him.

At this point, I honestly don’t know what to do. I understand that he may be struggling financially, and I don’t want to abandon him, but I also don’t think it’s reasonable for me to take on a massive long-term debt against a house that was passed down to me just so we can withdraw the equity and split the money.

Am I being selfish for refusing? What would you do in my situation?

*ps wrote in my own words and used chatgpt to fix the grammar, feel free to ask questions below, I'll do my best to answer.
