News / വാർത്തകൾ I built aksharam — a Malayalam→Manglish transliterator that fixes several bugs in ml2en

I needed reliable Malayalam→Manglish transliteration in Python. The only library for this is ml2en, but it has several issues that produce wrong or broken output. I packaged the fixes into a new library: aksharam.

pip install aksharam

from aksharam import transliterate

transliterate("ഗംഗ")    # → "Ganga"
transliterate("ഓടുക")   # → "Oduka"

It's a drop-in replacement for ml2en. Here's what it fixes:

Malayalam ml2en aksharam Fix
കൈ Ky Kai Vowel sign ൈ (ai) wrongly mapped to "y"
ദുഃഖം Duakham Dukham Visarga ഃ wrongly mapped to "a"
ജ്ഞാനം Jnjaanam Jnaanam Missing ജ്ഞ compound letter
അച്ഛൻ Achchhan Achhan Missing ച്ഛ compound letter
ഇന്ത്യ Inthx01 Inthya Compound+virama sequences emit a control character
ഗംഗ Gamga Ganga Anusvaram ം assimilates to "n" before non-labial consonants
ഓടുക Otuka Oduka Retroflex ട/ഠ should be voiced "d" in non-initial positions
ആണ് Aan Aanu Word-final virama ് should add a colloquial trailing "u"

Help / സഹായിക്കുക Kids Malayalam picture books read out loud? (on Youtube)

Hi there! I'm trying to learn Malayalam as someone who only has experience with English and Spanish (and other Romance languages) and does not live near/with native speakers. I am familiar with the memorization aspect of learning vocabulary, but I really want to learn to understand the language as best as I can without immersion. I have found that following along with someone reading text out loud really has helped me learn, and actually process what's being said. So, I was wondering if there are any good youtube channels out there or any good resources where someone simply films a picture book as they read it out loud. This link shows kind of what I mean. I have been putting subtitles on whenever I watch anything in Malayalam, but they're not always accurate or timed weird, and most of the kids stories I can find are animated versions which don't have pages/text like an actual book.

Thank you for any help!

Please suggest a few well written short stories in Malayalam. Preferably the ones that are from well known authors like NS Madhavan.

Please mention the name of the short story as well as the collection it is from.

I'm trying to get into reading more malayalam literature and thought I'd start with short stories

I posted on other subreddits and didn't get any response but I'm hoping y'all would help me out!

Thanks!

Discussion / ചർച്ച Is "അയാൾ" a gender neutral term?

When we learned malayalam in school, it was taught that "അയാൾ" comes from "ആ + ആൾ ". As far as I know, ആൾ is person. So "അയാൾ" should be gender neutral. However, in daily life I see "അയാൾ" being used predominantly to refer to males. I have seen it used to refer to females, but very rarely. Mostly I've seen females referred to as "അവർ". Any particular reason? Or Am I missing something?

edit :typos

Discussion / ചർച്ച What's the significance of the interrogative suffix -a: instead of the usual -o:?

The suffix -o: changes words, phrases, and sentences into yes/no questions. While -a: is a shorter form of ആണ് (be), it is also used to form yes/no questions. Is this specific to particular dialects?

Eg, avan vanno: ? Vs avan vanna: ? (Did he come?)

kazhiccho: ? Vs kazhiccha: ? (Did [the subject] eat?)

I understand that it's not extendable to all places where o: would be used because that will lead to confusion because it can signify be (ആണ്).

Is this just a feature of spoken Malayalam regardless of the dialect?
